What was the last movie you watched and how would you rate it?

    Ex Machina last night.

Fucking rocked. I'd bang that robot.

I don't know that that is the case here. Surely this movie was written around an out of shape person, but I like her delivery and the shit she says. It reminds me of the Will Ferrell Old School Days, where you knew what it was going to be, and you either loved it or hated it. But you knew going in where you stood. Will Ferrell was always good for me, so is Melissa McCarthy, I'm not trying to convince you that you should like her, just saying that I do. I also think if she lost 75 lbs, she'd still be incredibly funny, but wouldn't be acting in the type of movies she's getting now.
  • Laley23
I've never found her funny at all. So, her schtick has always been old. I just think she is annoying (except in St Vincent...when she actually had some real acting to do).

Got advanced screening passes to see SOUTHPAW tonight. Looking forward to it. Surprised I haven't seen Ant-Man yet.

I'd wager that you probably liked Paul Blart: Mall Cop.

Can't wait to see Pixel-- just kidding.

    how much?

A lot. Kevin James and Melissa McCarthy have virtually everything in common, so if you find one of them funny then they should both be hilarious.

Except they are not. Paul Blart was PG, Spy is R. That's a big difference. Plus like I said statham is incredibly funny too so it offsets the goofy shit McCarthy does. If you saw the movie and didn't like it I don't really care, but saying it's the same as Paul Blart is asinine. It's like saying bridesmaids and Dickie Roberts are the same movie because wiig and spade were on SNL and are both skinny blondes.

You know, I saw her in some TV show the other day, where she was married to a guy even bigger than she is. Her schtick fit for the role in that show.

I've only seen it once, but it seems like her brand would be better suited to sitcoms than major motion pictures. I loathe that woman in her raving, fat train wreck movie roles.

I'm glad I'm not the only one who thinks this movie is gonna suck.
  • j_crazy
I know pixels will suck. But with Peter dinklage it's probably worth watching.

Yes, without getting too into spoilers, it is a combination of genetic synthesis with the meaning of genesis (beginnings) all wrapped in one. It won't make sense until you see the movie or if I explained it with a huge spoiler.

Saw Southpaw last night. Mixed thoughts about it. First, allow me to preface I've never really been a fan of Jake Gyllenhaal.

    Never saw Donnie Darko...
Wasn't a fan of The Day After Tomorrow...
    Brokeback Mountian... Enough said...
    Never saw Jarhead...
Can't remember if I've ever seen Zodiac...
    Brothers was really good...
    Prince of Persia was terrible...
Source Code is probably by far Gyllenhaal's best film...
    Never saw Nightcrawler...

So... Idk... maybe my dislike for Jake Gyllenhaal is unfounded... but for whatever reason just not really a fan.

I didn't like how Gyllenhaal started off the film acting. Felt like he was 'trying too hard' to play the whole 'whigger Boxer mentality'. The acting/accent just felt very forced.

The film is VERY depressing in the beginning. And I don't really consider this a spoiler, so I'll go ahead and share this - because you can see it coming from a mile away - but the film does end with a happy ending.

The g/f LOVED the movie. She called it a roller coaster of emotions. She thinks it's Oscar worthy. I say it's definitely NOT in the conversation for 'Best Film'; MAYBE Gyllenhaal will receive a nomination for Best Male Actor, but I think that's where it will end - nomination. No way I see him WINNING with this performance. Maybe the Director receives a nomination, but IMO that would be it.

I thought it was good/ok. Idk... maybe I'm tainted because I've seen the Rocky films and I know what a good boxing movie can be.

I'd easily put Rocky IV, Rocky, Rocky II, and Rocky Balboa over Southpaw (maybe even Rocky III)
I'd easily put Cinderella Man over Southpaw.

Haven't seen Raging Bull, Snatch, Million Dollar Baby, The Fighter, The Hurricane, Ali.

I know she's a child actor, and I can only imagine how difficult child acting is / would be, but I thought the little girl/daughter was quite annoying.

    I've give Southpaw a 6/10.

SB's reviews are great. Keep 'em rolling in. Lol
  • Laley23
Man SB, that's a rough start to a post. "I don't like xxx, but I haven't seen yyyy".

I mean, I'd respect your opinion on Gyllenhall a lot more if you had seen ANY of his 5 best movies. But none of them? And to pass judgement??? Lol.

I'm just basing his entire career and life on Day After Tomorrow. Fuck that movie, so therefore, fuck him.
  • Laley23
Granted he didn't list all his movies, but I assume he listed all he had seen and then a few others he hadn't.

In no order, IMO, his (EDIT 6) best:

    Darko
    Nightcrawler
    October Sky
    Zodiac
    Jarhead
    Brothers

Prisoners was pretty good, but I thought the directing was just awful and they just didn't make a very good film out of a plot that had a lot of potential and a great cast.

With Love and Other Drugs/Brokeback Mountain being very good films, that just don't appeal to me. But I can step back and realize he was very good in both and both were very well done.
  • Raw Dawgin' it
The Judge - too long, felt like Downey was just playing Tony Stark the entire movie. 5/10.
  • Raw Dawgin' it
Regarding Southpaw, I won't be seeing it. Forest Whitaker is never in anything good.

I watched it the other night, and I can't decide how I feel about it. Definitely too long. Somewhat interesting story, and some good performances. I guess I would say 5/10, too.
