Will Zimmerman get a fair trial in the Travon Martin case?

  • gut
I don't know if I'd go that far. She's elected, not appointed? So any "pressure" she feels would only be to her constituents. Personally, like the DA I think she is just putting on a show for politics. A reasonable jury would not convict Zimmerman, and the judge and DA are clearly relying on the jury to be reasonable. I wonder how they will sleep if the jury comes back with "guilty".

I honestly think she's being pressured from above. Just look at her attitude. Now they talking about child abuse charges because TM was under 18. Obama has had an agenda to assure GZ is found guilty because he took a side the 1st day saying if he had a son he would be just like TM. Eric Holder has sent all his community action committees to help finance and organize the racial aspects of the trial.

What kind of sentence would that result in?

IMO he should and deserves to do some time.

CNN aired a document showing Zimmerman's SSN and phon number. Think it was by accident?
Hundreds of Twitter users already have taken to the social media platform to express their glee and/or outrage of the error.

“Hahahaa! Now the whole world has #Zimmerman’s social security number!!! Lmbooo!! Now HE can be victimized!!!! #JusticeForTrayvon,” one user wrote.

“Sleazy irresponsible CNN shows Zimmerman’s DL# and social security# on live TV…the thugs jump at it & pass it #SICK,” another user said.

As big of an accident as when a low-tier celeb-type tweets something offensive and then claims their account was "hacked". Because I'm sure some low-level schlub will be reprimanded or fired over this, but the simple truth is that if a major news agency does something that boneheaded and irresponsible, there should be a MAJOR housecleaning.

    Manslaughter.

If he is convicted of anything, he will have the easiest appeal in the courts history. This is a modern day lynching.

Is it manslaughter if it was self defense? By saying it was manslaughter you believe there was no self-defense applicable at all.
  • SportsAndLady
No fucking way should there be ANY charges against GZ. Except maybe any smaller charges from the state of Florida because they're so antigun there but I don't really know. He should definitely walk though.

The charge of manslaughter shouldn't even be brought up. The only way he can be convicted of that is if the jury doesn't see it as self defense. If that is the case, he should be convicted of murder. I think some people here are getting caught up in the racial aspect of this whole thing...

Jesus they are pumping charges here. I'm telling you I really hope the jury does the right thing............I am now not confident at all the right thing is going to happen. They want GZ locked up and are making sure the jury convicts on these lesser charges! Me? the racial aspect....umm isn't that what the politicians and news outlets have made this out from the start....there is no getting caught up in that unless you are calling for a conviction here. If he is convicted its because the race baiters got it to happen!

This is very similar to the two related concepts of anchoring (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anchoring) or Door-in-the-Face (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Door-in-the-face_technique). The Murder 2 is essentially the anchor that all subsequent judgement/decisions appear much more reasonable. If I charge $1000 for something at first, even if it is only worth say $500, when I decide to charge $750, that seems pretty good if the perspective is based on the $1000; however, it is still overpriced. In this case, there is the possibility that the Murder 2 seems extreme but manslaughter doesn't sound so bad when that is the baseline anchor.

I have to major problems with this.
    1. To me, I don't see any practical negative to overcharge. If at by the end of the trial they feel they have proven that greater charge, then great. If they don't feel that it has been proven, then put the lesser charges out there, even if the entire case was built around the greater charge. It seems that this is an opportunity to throw random stuff out there (much like the child abuse component of today) and hope something works. I feel like it just adds unnecessary confusion and puts the defense at a severe disadvantage.

    2. At least in this case, while these are lesser charges, punishment is not necessarily less severe. First, that is a fundamental flaw of any punishment system if the greater offense does not have a greater punishment. Second, at the end of the day, at least to me, the point is to find the punishment most applicable to a given situation. Part of the reason that we have categories and severity of charges is to represent that punishment. In this case, manslaughter with a gun is just as severe. I'm not sure why a gun, provided it is legally owned and permitted on person, is any different than a knife, baseball bat, car, or any other possible weapon would carry such a large difference in punishment.

all depends how long the jury takes...it's 6 women so i expect at least 18 months before even 3 of them are on the same page.

I think the jury is dismissed today after closing arguments. The will start tomorrow from my understanding.
