well who is the one who gets to say if its right or wrong? i can decide what i think but i cant judge other people. i dont think you should be able to either. everyone should have the right to decide for themselves. im quite sure that there are plenty who dont believe in interracial marriage or dont recognize it based upon some of the same beliefs used against gays. i am a direct result of one of those unions so it would be very hard for me to ever say it is ok for one group to tell antother group what is right or wrong.cruiser_96;1433517 wrote:I think the underlined portion is were I differ with some folks on here. To say that it doesn't effect you may very well be a true statement. However, to base the rightness or wrongness (or even the accept-abilty) on this fact doesn't sit well with me.
There are any number of occurence that happen over a 24 hour period that do not effect me. However, I would venture to say that some of those things are wrong.
I think this is one of the main areas that needs to be discussed before moving on... absolute vs. relative right and wrong. -

I'm not sure why it's something "we" get to decide.Gblock;1433589 wrote:well who is the one who gets to say if its right or wrong? -
TiernanCrazy how smebody elses sexual preferences threaten so many other people that most likely have some deeply suppressed homosexual urges.

It has no legal effect and is void because such an attempt to engage in the contract of marriage doesn't fulfill the requirements of having a man and a woman when two homosexuals are involved.Gblock;1433519 wrote:In addition, Ohio law says that any marriage between persons of the same sex is against the strong public policy of the state, has no legal force or effect, is void ab initio (null from the beginning) and will not be recognized.
doesnt say it doesnt fit the definition just that they refuse to recognize it.
kinda like this guy from high school that i beat up after school one day. to this day he continues not to recognize the a$$ beating and still tells people that me and my friends jumped him. this doesnt change the fact that it happened or that people got "married" albeit in another state. -

Excellent sharktopus reference. The movie was horrible, but I'd completely watch it again.Gblock;1433552 wrote: -
Dr Winston O'BoogieWhat any of us personally think about homosexuality doesn't matter here. Bottom line is she signed a morality clause and was found in violation of it. That's the risk she was willing to take and it backfired after all these years. It makes no difference whether any of us think the other teachers at the school are in violation of their clauses. That would be similar to asking a police officer to let you out of a ticket because "there's tons of other cars out here speeding that you haven't caught". I'm not saying I agree with the Church's stance on homosexual relationships. But I do respect that the church has a standard and doesn't bend it on a case by case basis. That would make it a worthless standard.

Tiernan"Worthless Standard" is pretty much the best description I've heard yet of the church's morality clause.

i seriously hope they just do the administrators and the bishops, board, etc...leave the teachers out of it they really had nothing to do with it. of course i hope they could out the parent who originally did the complaintgut;1436660 wrote:So, basically, a number of teacher's **** viewing histories are about to become public. -
TiernanYes I'm hoping they out the original complaint and the genereal consensus is amongst Watterson folks is that it was not a parent but actually the Dean of Boys at the school who has had problems with Carla for sometime and knew of her situation for years.

Dr Winston O'BoogieIt really doesn't matter who sent the note. She'd been there for 19 years. Likely it was common knowledge that she was a lesbian and they operated in a "don't ask, don't tell" mode. What changed it all wasn't the letter, but the decision for her to make it "public" in her mother's obituary. Had that not happened, we wouldn't be talking about this. By making it "public" that way, she opened herself up to this. She'd signed the agreement to abide by church teachings as an employee. So she would have known that this decision exposed her.

Actually...if it was common knowledge, the letter is exactly what changed it all. The school figured they could let things go until a parent complained. As soon as that happened, they reacted.Dr Winston O'Boogie;1436934 wrote:It really doesn't matter who sent the note. She'd been there for 19 years. It's already a pretty shitty situation. It will be even shittier if it was a co-worker with a vendetta that sent the letter that got her fired. -
Dr Winston O'BoogieI don't know that they'll ever find out who sent the letter. It is a bad situation. Had she not brought it into the obituary, it would likely not be a topic right now. Afte 19 years at the school, she knew that by deciding to make this information public, she was opening herself up to firing.
It's not a good situation, I'll agree with you there. Agree or not with the church, I do admire it not changing its stance based on current winds. -

Perhaps she assumed that since it was "common knowledge" there would be no harm in putting that in the paper. I took one look at her in the video and could tell that she was a lesbian. If it took the obituary for a parent to realize she's gay...then that parent is stupid and shouldn't be allowed to have children of their own.Dr Winston O'Boogie;1437009 wrote:I don't know that they'll ever find out who sent the letter. Perhaps anonymous can find the other people at the school who have violated their morality clause and then we'll see if the school holds them all to the same standard.Dr Winston O'Boogie;1437009 wrote:I don't know that they'll ever find out who sent the letter. I hope they do! It would be refreshing to see a gravitation back the championing of the noble, the moral, the virtuous, the ethical life.FatHobbit;1437013 wrote:Perhaps anonymous can find the other people at the school who have violated their morality clause and then we'll see if the school holds them all to the same standard.
EDIT: What would be even better is if those individuals, on their own free will, either a) stopped living an immoral life, and/or b) turned themselves in. No need for someone else to do it! -
