  I shell of buckshot contains 9 pellets at 60 grains. Assuming an 8 shot Mossberg or Remington, that is 4320 grains and 72 projectiles per reload. Per standard 30 round magazine at 55gr that is 30 projectiles and 1650 grains being tossed downrange.

  Would have been just as ugly in a confined space with no cover, such as a classroom. And with a couple of pistols to eliminate the threat of a handful of adults there's no one to rush him when re-loading.

  Some had as many as 11 shots, apparently. He could have done just as much damage in that scenario with a couple of handguns and far less bullets if he so chose.

  I don't have any answers as to how to prevent this. I cannot understand why anyone has a need to own an assault riffle. I personally don't see the need to own handguns either. Perhaps if those were illegal, this tragedy could have been averted. All that said, I also realize that if someone is hell bent on causing mayhem, they can do it. Homemade explosives, a vehicle used to ram a crowd - it can be played out in many ways. This thing just kills me inside - like it does everyone else. It is so extremely frustrating because we have no answer to the 'why'. It is hard to accept that one person can reach out and cause so much evil and there is very little we can do to stop it.
  
  If ownership of several types of guns becomes a casualty of this incident, I'm fine with it. Our culture is obsessed with firearms in a way othe first world nations are not. And the number of incidents like this one happen far more frequently here than anywhere else. That said, this is not a solution. And I'm afraid there never will be one.

  I shed true tears once this weekend, something I haven't done in years. And it was when one of the new stations went quiet and simply scrolled the names of the victims with their ages.

  My thoughts are with all involved, parents, teachers, etc. I'm guessing they will have a long road of therapy ahead of them.

  I did read that they are not even sure they will reopen the school. They figure law enforcement will probably not turn the building back over for possibly months, and then the memories will just be too much. They've found a place for them to go for now.

  There is no need for 30 round magazines to be readily available for a shotgun! Of course a 30 shotgun rounds would've been horrific too...
  You don't need an 8 shot pump action shotgun with a "standard 30 round magazine" to defend your home.

  I think this is why I am bit more detached from it all. Even though it obviously makes me sick. I don't have any children. If I did, I imagine this would be eating away at me just thinking about the possibility, especially being around Christmas time. Luckily, I hate kids. Ha.
  
  This is a different kind of horror. No doubt about it. The worst kind. Had this not happened in a school, and instead in a lakeside home somewhere in the Catskills, it's the kind of thing Hollywood would make a major motion picture about.

  I feel so bad for the parents. I bet not all of them live to make it through Christmas day. There were reports of one dad who said he was already ready to end it all, that his little girl was all he had in this life. That would be crazy difficult. Wow.

  Disagree. If we eat the right quality food, raised the right way and avoid stuff humans weren't meant to consume, appetite and hormones regulate themselves. Portions don't become an issue because nobody has to think about what they eat or how much.
  
  Show me another species that thinks about what they eat and doesn't just eat to sustain their maximal existence and performance? This is what we have to get back to. Unfortunately, many of these "toxic" foods including wheat, corn, soy, fruit (when bred for size and sweetness), byproducts of commodities and chemical additives are profitable and plentiful. Therefore, we continue to try and promote other ways to bypass having to eliminate the problem.
