Olympics (Discussion and Results aka Spoilers)

Phelps wins his final battle with Lochte. They go 1-2 in the 200 IM. Phelps is just a stud.

Good for phelps getting an individual gold. How many more events does he have?
• Fred Garvin
I think he has one more individual event, the 100 fly, and then a relay.
• Automatik
Suck it Lochte!!!!
• Fly4Fun
Phelps with that win becomes the first male swimmer to ever win gold in the same event 3 Olympics in a row. Just another notch on his belt.

Phelps just followed up his 200IM win by swimming the fastest time this year in the 100 Fly semis. Looks like getting edged out in the 200 Fly has pissed him off. I love it!

I'm just checking out the results now and I'm shocked as hell that Lochte lost the 200 Back. A bronze medal in that is definitely a shock. Congratulations to Tyler Clary on the Gold Medal and Olympic record.

1-3 in the 200 Back
1-2 in the 200 IM

Rebecca Soni gets the Gold in the 200 Breast with a new World Record, first female ever under 2:20.00 in the event.

Looks like it was a great evening for USA Swimming!

Well there are a few things that are working to his favor now.

Phelps doesn't have the endurance that he used to, so the shorter events are more in his favor as he still seems to have the speed if not faster.

I thought he should have won the 200Fly, but the 200IM seems like a shorter event than other 200's because you switch strokes and use different muscle groups, so endurance is less of an issue in the 200IM than other 200's.

And with the 100Fly he still has the speed so he has a good shot at the gold in that as well.

And with those swimming medals, the USA passes China in total medals and ties them in golds.

Nah, I believe that the team from Spain pulled some upsets earlier on and if they beat the US would have won the pool and taken the #4 seed, but they advance none the less. Or at least that's what I thought the commentators were saying.

Phelps gets a rematch with Le Clos in the 100 Fly tomorrow. Milorad Cavic, Phelps' old rival, will be there as well.

Soni has been unreal in the 200 Breaststroke. World record in two consecutive swims!

Some food for thought:

Phelps can still has a legitimate shot to have more gold medals than anyone else has medals total except for 1 person (the female gymnast with 18).

The USA mens basketball team is up by 79 against Nigeria, lol

EDIT: they won by 83.
• Cher
US made more 3's than Nigeria made 2's.

They also outscored Nigeria by more points (83) than Nigeria scored themselves (73).

Has anyone heard an explanation on the tie breaker?

Not sure if this was mentioned yet, but some girl from Middletown became the first U.S. olympian to win a gold medal in Judo.

For you wrestling fans, Judo is very entertaining. I can see why a judoist can make the transition to wrestling very easily. For you wrestling fathers, I would get your sons into judo before you get them into wrestling.

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/1282823-the-olympic-gymnastics-tiebreaker-rule-that-denied-aly-raisman-a-bronze-medal

It's confusing as hell, but yes. Sadly, the only place I've found it broken down in this detail is Bleacher Report
THe tiebreak is complete bullshit, as it rewarded the Russian for FALLING ON THE BEAM.
Here's how the tiebreaker played out.

Mustafina and Raisman each scored a 59.566 in their four events. Mustafina took the bronze because of a tiebreak rule that was updated for this Olympics.

According to the Federation of International Gymnastics (FIG)'s Technical Regulations, which apply in the case of any ties:
In case of a tie in points at any place in Competition II, the ranking will be determined by the following criteria:

1. The gymnast with the highest sum of the final apparatus scores obtained will prevail (i.e. add the total of the 5, 4, 3, 2, 1 of the highest final apparatus scores for men / the total of the 3, 2, 1 highest final apparatus scores for women.

2. If they remain tied, the highest total E score by adding all apparatus will prevail.

3. If they remain tied, the highest total D score by adding all apparatus will prevail.

4. If they remain tied, the gymnasts will share the same classification.
Competition II refers to the individual all-around. The judges go by the criteria first to fourth, and if any one of the rules breaks the tie, then that gymnast wins.

The first piece of criteria was the only one necessary for Mustafina to break ahead of Raisman. The gymnasts each dropped their lowest score in competition—the balance beam for both of them.

Mustafina took a fall on the balance beam and scored a 13.633, while Raisman scored a 14.200. When those scores were dropped, Mustafina had a 45.933 total and Raisman had a 45.366.
Therefore, Mustafina earned the bronze medal, and Raisman was left empty-handed.
If Raisman and Mustafina had still been tied after the lowest score was dropped, all four execution scores would have been added together and the higher score would have won. If they were still tied after that, all four difficulty scores would have been added together and the higher score would have won. If after all that there was still a tie, the gymnasts would have shared the bronze medal.
That was not the case, and according to the rules, Mustafina rightfully beat out Raisman for the bronze.

America finally has an Olympic judo champion -- a 22-year-old from Ohio who was sexually abused by a former coach as a child, became a self-described "teenage punk" who hated everything about her sport and then found a way to turn everything around.

Apparently the lowest score of the four events is dropped. The total of the three remaining events determines the winner. That seems really stupid.

Both Mustafina and Raisman had a total score of 59.566. The lowest score for each of them was on the balance beam. Mustafina's score on the beam was 13.633, while Raisman's was 14.200. Once those scores were subtracted from the total, Mustafina had a better overall score on the other three events.

Honestly, I thought a tie meant that both of them received medals. That's how it is in most of the other sports, I think.

EDIT: ts1227 beat me to it.

There was a push to eliminate ties after the Atlanta games, and they had got rid of them. This new rule was just put in place in June, which allows for them again if it gets through all of those conditions (NOTE: this will never happen).

New Zealand looked aggressive earlier. But after about 10 minutes things calmed down. USA went up 1-0 on a cross from Alex Morgan to Abby Wambach for the goal in the 27th minute.
