If this isn't 100% ND's liability, it is 99.99999% their liability. Coaches run the practice. period. They screwed up royally by putting the kid in a dangerous situation (even if they were fully unaware of the danger). It is crazy to me to even insinuate that he's at much fault, if any. He was doing his job.

So you are saying if he felt unsafe in the high winds he shouldn't have told the coaches he wasn't comfortable being up there and just hopped down? He had to be the lift operator to know he was possibly in danger? Like I said earlier your job isn't worth your life. I also said earlier than ND was mostly to blame. They let him continue to film the practice in dangerous conditions. I'm not debating whether they are at fault or not.

So if a team is practicing with a thunderstorm brewing, the players are the ones liable to tell the coaches they should stop practicing, and if they don't and one is struck by lightning, well damn its partially their own fault for not being so adamant with the coach about their safety?

I don't see the difference. I don't get why people are blaming this kid at all.
  • karen lotz
I don't think anyone is blaming him. I know I'm not. He was doing his job. Many other current and ex video guys have come out since then and shared stories of them staying up when they know they shouldn't have. They understand why Sullivan stayed up. He wasn't trying to be brave and wasn't told he couldn't come down.

You are right the coaches should have told the kid to come down off the lift. I am not denying that. I guess I am just self aware enough to know that if I am in a dangerous position I am going to get out of it whether it may cost me my job or not. Karen has it right though I don't believe that he would have lost his job if he decided to come down from the lift. Like I said I'm not denying ND's at fault. I'm simply saying I think the kid should have come down.

I know what you're saying, and you're partially blaming the kid. If you're blaming the kid in that situation, you might as well blame a passenger in a bus accident that didn't demand to be let out if they thought road conditions were too dangerous for the driver to continue driving.

The kid was a 20 year old college student videographer, I doubt he had full expertise on the structural sound of the lift. That is the responsibility of the program/administration. That's the responsbile party.

Another thing I'll throw in that I've read from a few places...ND's video coordinator has been there for 20 years and is known around the country as the top video coordinator in college athletics (they work with more than just the football team). I would have to imagine he has worked in elements similar conditions to Tuesday and Wednesday of last week and has more than likely had to pull video guys down.

How far into practice did this happen? Five minutes? Ninety minutes?

Would anyone really be surprised if Sullivan's family was enraged and demanded Brian Kelly's resignation? This is the sort of thing that costs people their jobs easily.

Anyone who thinks Kelly has anything to do with the videographer and weather is pretty ignorant, IMO. Div. 1 football employs 100's of people, and there are people in charge of this. This probably was never even in Kelly's mind as he conducted practice and did the job he is paid to do.

Some heads should roll, but not the head coach's.

    ^^^
Why not? He himself has cliamed to be a "The Buck Stops Here" kinda leader. I'd say he is definitely feeling some significant heat for this blunder.

The head coach is responsible for everything related to the football program.

Give me a break with that shit. It's not even possible.

so whats the deal with Lynch ? I heard it yesterday, didn't realize it was breaking news. I heard he is tight with Prestwood and going to F$U. They will have a helluva class with Jimbo and the Bag Man Eddie Gran.

The person in charge of an organization is accountable for everything that happens at all levels of the organization. It's true at organizations far larger and more complex than a college football program.

Then that would land at Swarbrick's feet. The video department is under the entire athletic department, not just the football team.

The deal with Lynch is he decommitted and was supposedly crying when he did so, according to his mother. He is opening recruiting with Florida, FSU and Miami all in the mix and he won't consider ND anymore. I would be shocked if there was any shady recruiting going on in Florida...

I believe that practice started around 3:30 and the accident happened at 4:51. And I would be shocked if the family demanded his resignation.

Maybe the family will demand a clean sweep of both Kelly and Soreprick is appropriate.

HE SPREAD HIS GRANDFATHER'S ASHES AROUND THE STADIUM DURING HIS VISIT. Who does that and then decommits?! WHAT THE FUCK.

it was an accident--a tragic, unfortunate accident....ND will pay, but IMO nobody's getting fired, and nobody's resigning (unless malicious neglect, or intent, is found--and that seems highly unlikely in this case from the initial reports)

An insider on the OSU scout board posted over a month ago that Lynch was all FSU and would decommit from ND. He's sounding smarter by the day.

A friend said Sullivan never expressed concerns about working in the lift and questioned whether Sullivan actually feared for his life when he posted a messages on Twitter describing the wind gusts and saying it was "terrifying" to be on the tower.

"Knowing him, that was definitely not the case," said Shane Steinberg, 20, a junior from New York City.

"There's a misunderstanding in general of our social networking culture and what it all means. I think that the sarcasm of it all and the playfulness about them is falling through the cracks," he said.
    Interesting take..

    where did that come from?
  • rock_knutne
I said it once, I'll say it again, there are some really DUMB assholes who post on these ND threads..........DUMB!
