Is Urban Meyer a joke?

  • Writerbuckeye
I don't believe this particular explanation.

But, you know...there's been so many to pick from.

Fair enough, if you don't believe it, you don't believe it.

    Urban's partner

“Urban is a football coach,” Shelley Meyer said. “He loves his players like they are his own sons and he loves making a difference in kids’ lives. This is why he does it.

“If it were only football, he could have walked away easily. He loves football. He loves being a college football coach, but the real reason he does it is because he is a Christian man who we believe so strongly that God has called him into this profession with the purpose of having an effect on kids’ lives. He couldn’t walk away from those kids he loves so much and he couldn’t walk away from what we know is his life mission.”

“There’s nothing to that one,” Shelley said. “I’m not going into any detail but it wasn’t a heart attack but it was something that if we don’t take care of it now, could be a real problem later on. So the time to take care of it is now although we’ll start dealing with it more specifically after National Signing Day. We’re actually already dealing with them in some respects and he’s already getting better, but after we get through recruiting, he’s going to recharge, take some time away, spend time with the family --- how’s that for a concept? --- and figure out what he needs to do to make all this work. He’s just got to take care of himself and that’s something we’re already working on.”

    'Steady in the boat'

    http://www.gatorcountry.com/football/article/steady_in_the_boat/8154

There was a workout scheduled in three shifts beginning at 5:45. But after the bad news of the day before , Marotti dreaded the thought of having to chase players because “nobody’s going to show up – it’s going to be like pulling teeth.”
Much to his surprise that wasn’t the case. And right there was the first clue that this 2009 team had learned all the lessons about work ethic, commitment and finishing the job. The leadership among these players came shining through and inspired the coaches.

As they talked, Marotti could see Urban rocking back and forth, and he knew his head coach was getting into the rhythm and flow of the moment.
“I think I turned up the flame a little that was already burning inside him – he’s a football coach. And, I don’t know, he got on the phone and started practice and that was it.”

That phone call had been to Foley and plans to work out the details of Urban’s leave of absence began to fall in place – although Marotti didn’t know it. Shortly thereafter, Foley summoned Addazio to his office and asked him to accept the role as interim coach. Without flinching, without asking for a title or more money or a new contract, Addazio looked Foley in the eye, square-jawed, and said yes to the assignment, agreeing to turn down an interview as head coach of Central Michigan so he could accept it.

I am, I just don't always feel the need to defend crap like this. It is absolutely hilarious how people are so hurt by one loss so many years ago that their only medicine is to pretend they are somehow better people than a guy they don't know personally. Can't argue the wins, so now it is about character...every little thing gets blown out of proportion and if that doesn't work then complete fabrication will suffice.

I'm just glad Meyer is the coach at Florida and not a guy like Tressel, who has a documented history of paying his quarterbacks (at least three now), as well as providing for star running backs then selling them up the river when the heat comes down. I don't mind a guy trying to protect his private information ("lies" about his health issues), but I would have a problem with a cheater who stabs his own players in the back.
  • Writerbuckeye
    LOLOLOLOLOLOLOL at your Tressel comments.

LMAO--"paying his quarterbacks"? I guess certain "fans" of Florida not only have the same lack of integrity as their coach, but his penchant for embellishment also--need me to translate that for you, moronski??
  • enigmaax
Yeah, Ray Isaac laughed all the way to the bank. Troy Smith laughed to a suspension. Terrelle Pryor just had somebody pay the money back. Oh, he probably didn't know anything about those. It's probably just a coincidence that his top QBs end up taking money. A wolf in an ugly sheep vest, that's all he is.
  • vball10set
^^links tying Coach Tressel to any of these alleged payments? frickin' idiot...
  • ytownfootball
enigmaax why are you falling into this sling fest? Didn't think I'd see it from you.
  • jhay78
^^And I thought that guy was an intelligent Florida fan.

Again, this thread was started by a CANES fan. It's not just OSU fans taking shots.

Defending Urban Meyer, however, seem to only be Florida fans and ND fans.

    1. As head coach, you are responsible for your program. A coach can't NOT know about these things and that makes him guilty. Read any thread about a coach from any other program and you'll find this is the prevailing thought.
    2. Facts aren't relevant. Meyer is a sleazebag because a blogger posted some farce about his willingness to die for a recruit. Doesn't matter that the recruit said it wasn't true. Meyer is a dirtbag because he faked a health issue to bring attention to the university, though no one has ever admitted or alleged this anywhere else.

So you believe what you want, I'll believe what I want and we can both piss on the character of guys we don't know by picking and choosing (or just making up) random points to support our opinions.
  • Writerbuckeye
That Meyer lied about his health issues is a documented fact.

Please show me similar documentation regarding ANY of your allegations that Tressel is behind paying his quarterbacks.

He didn't "fake" anything- he used poor judgment, IMO, with the timing of his announcement.

Seriously, how much time and mental anguish goes into making a decision to resign from a major D-1 school, let alone a top 1-2 program, and then, not even 24 hours later, you change your mind (on a whim of an emotional experience at practice), and as time goes by, don't give up any major responsibilities (as of yet)?

And you expect people to not take shots?

What's ND have to do with this and which ND fans have been defending him? Surely not me, the guy played ND like a piano several years ago, why would I defend him? I merely stated the fact that some, not all, but some fans from other fanbases on this forum are saying he's lying about his medical condition to regain the spot light and taking shots at him for it........IMO, that's insane! Again, why do OSU fans care, unless you have a grudge?

Writer - I'm not sure why he should be expected to share his personal health information with anyone publically. The stretch is where you said he did it to make himself look "good, better, or sympathetic". I do understand that people sometimes pull stunts to get sympathy, but in my experience those people aren't really successful, especially to the extent that a guy like Meyer has been. I just don't know what you know about Meyer that automatically makes you think it was some kind of stunt for attention.

jhay - Have you ever made a difficult decision? Did you have as much at stake? I would imagine he took a lot of heat from his family who was concerned with his health. With a little bit of down time between the season and bowl, those conversations likely became more prominent, especially with the emergency room thing. I figure the environment he was in at that time weighed heavily, as did the feelings of his family and influences.

But I can understand how just when he thought he made the right decision for everyone else and was trying to close the book, the practice triggered this one major thing inside him - coaching is what HE wants to do. Pretty much his whole life he has defined himself by his success in sports and coaching. That isn't something that is going to change overnight or maybe ever.

If a person has never found or experienced that "this is what I do, this is who I am" moment in life, that person isn't going to understand the mental process at all. It is easy to criticize, but until you've been fulfilled, you don't know what it is like to have to try and give it up. Being conflicted doesn't make you a horrible person and sometimes the time you have to deal with it isn't your choice.
