Ohio State Basketball Official Thread

Della Valle is an average defender that has shown the ability to play on the offensive end when given a chance. Scott is a pretty good defender(was abused by Walton in the 2nd half last night), that is a non-factor on offense. I guess you have to choose what you want, but I'll always take the guy that can give you something on the offensive end. At the very least, ADV has to be guarded around the 3-point line, while Scott does not. IMO, Craft and Scott on the floor at the same time isn't going to work, unless your going small and pressing.

There are the stats for Ohio State by player breakdown for the year. Was just going through it and don't know how much you can take away from it but there are some interesting things in there.

    1. Ohio State has a higher PPP(Points Per Possession) differential between offense and defense with Ross off the floor than on it, due to being way better defensively.

    2. Amir Williams has the highest PPP offensively on the team, as well as the highest PPP differential between being on the court and off the court. (Ohio State is 0.23 PPP better than the other team with him on the floor and 0.11 PPP better with him off the floor.)

    3. Sam Thompson also has a negative differential being on the floor than off the floor.

    4. The only players that the offense has a higher PPP with them being on the floor than off it are Lenzelle, Ross, Scott, and Amir.

    5. With Craft, Amir, Ross, and Lenzelle all playing, Ohio State is 0.09 PPP better offensively with Scott playing over Thompson, and 0.15 PPP better defensively with Scott playing over Thompson. They are 0.35 PPP better than the opponent with Scott in with those four and 0.11 PPP better than the opponent with Thompson in. That is with 460 possessions with Scott and 144 with Thompson, so obviously 1/3 the sample size but still.

    6. Craft, Thompson, and Scott being on the floor together operates at 0.95 PPP offensively. Terrible.

Anyway, I am a huge stats nerd especially with regards to advanced metrics so this intrigues me, and more than anything shows Amir Williams' importance to the team.

Also, would mean more to see these for just Big Ten games since the non-conference schedule was a joke. Amir tore up some of those teams stats wise so would be interesting to see how he's doing in just B1G games.

Which is pretty sad. His importance is due more to what the other options don't offer than to what Amir does.

Yea, the Big Ten stats of this nature would be more interesting, both Williams and Scott played well against terrible competition.

Amir is what he is currently. He is very inconsistant, mostly with his effort. When he plays hard, he def. gives OSU something. Unfortunately, he doesn't play hard all the time and disappears for long stretches. But what is the other option? We have none. I have been hard on Scott most of the year. He has been disappointing. That being said, minus the UM game the other nite, he has played very well off the bench. But again, he is very inconsistant and a non factor offensively most of the time. I agree about him and Craft being on the floor at the same time. Its going to happen, but I wish it was limited. But I know Matta does it more for defense than anything. But as mentioned, Scott was abused the other nite in the second half. I was hoping Matta would have moved Craft to Walton. The couple times he had swithed over, he gave him troubles.
As for Della Valle being an avg. defender. Again, it depends on who is on the floor with him and who he is matched up with. He lacks strength. If he is playing small forward, most in the big ten are better athletes and stronger players who will abuse him. But I don't disagree, when OSU is struggling offensively, I'd at least like to see him get a shot at knocking some shots down.
Bottom line, this team is pretty good defensively, but is very limited offensively. Their margin of error is very thin. They need to do the little things, and they don't do that often when they hit adversity. They lack some mental toughness IMO.

This is the first buckeye team since I was a little kid (early to mid 90s) that I remember being absolutely depressed about. We're a fucking mess to watch. I end up pissed even when we win. I can't stand that we can't rebound. I still have some hope that this can be a sweet 16 team, though.

I feel like I'm watching two mid-level MAC teams, and Amir can graduate early as far as I'm concerned.

    I hate this team

Nice game by Loving, we're going to need his scoring off the bench moving forward.

You're gonna need a lot more than that lol
  • Terry_Tate
If they make the sweet 16 I'll be thrilled. I'm just hoping they don't lose in the first round at this point.
  • gerb131
They still got potential to make noise in the tourney

    Just thrown out, IMO.

The other 2 should get T's.

Amir Williams has to be the calmest man in the world. Dude was all up in his face then after it Amir just went to his teammates and looked like he was pulling Ross back, lol.

Never seen 10 free throws in a row 6 by nw 4 osu lol

For some reason Crawford got no penalty for pushing Ross. That doesn't excuses Ross' lack of discipline, but fair is fair.

When I saw the 15 point line I didn't think tOSU had a chance to cover.I was pleasantly surprised. Hell, if Crawford had not been in a zone tOSU wins by 20+. I finally saw Williams get into a defensive stance when guarding on the perimeter.Clearly, this was a team win.Everybody not named Della Valle played positive minutes. The Buckeyes absolutely need to defeat Minny to climb the seed chart.
