OSU is colder than cold. (20-60 from the field and 4-19 from 3)

OSU was about average for them from 3. At least the 5 games Ive seen. They are DREADFUL from long range, even when wide open.

Ohio State will struggle on the road with all the better teams in the B1G because let's face the facts, their outside shooting is not going to get better and they have no scoring besides Thomas inside. They will occacionally have a game when they shoot well but those are the exceptions and not the rule. You can count on Thomas (who I think as the team loses games and struggles offensively will start to force more shots of his own) and after that who? Smith Jr. once in a while, Craft and Scott hardly ever (just talking shooting) Thompson can only dunk, Ross, looks like he's wearing cement shoes he moves so slow and Williams and Ravenell not much from these two. The defense will save them some games but I think that I will have to re-evaluate this team's standing in the conference. I agree now with those who say a middle of the pack team 9-9 or 10-8. Let's hope they get it together but you could see this coming late in the nonconference schedule as they struggled to score against some very weak teams. I said earlier 23-7 heading into the B1G tournement, now I'm thinking maybe 20-10 if they're lucky.

    It's crynasty, S&L, gimme a break here-lol

edit: All too often it seems when a team loses it's because they're "outcoached"--how is that? btw, I've got a serious question for you too--iyo, do you think Self was outcoached by Izzo earlier this season?

Some people give coaches to much credit for wins and to much blame for losses. College basketball teams are made during the recruiting season. Coach K has lost to Lehigh and VCU in the 1st round of the NCAA tournament. Did coach K get outcoached? No. He didn't have players on his roster who could stay in front of VCU's Eric Maynor or Lehigh's C.J.McCollum. Did coach K know what needed to be done? Yes. Did he have players who could execute what he knew had to be done? No.He wasn't out coached. He was beaten by players who were better than his.

Exactly. Thad Matta doesn't shoot the ball.

I like that you immediately think of Duke anytime a basketball analogy needs to me made. No really, I like that they're always in the back of your mind. Makes me smile. :)

Haha ok sorry, didn't realize it was Sky Is Falling Crynasty.

And I'm honestly not sure on your question, as I think it was so early in the season I feel like both coaches were playing that game to get a feel for their players, rather than coaching to win that game and nothing else. I feel like self had a better understanding of his team during the Osu game than matta did, so he was able to coach his team to win, whereas matta was coaching perhaps to still feel out his younger guys. Short answer though, absolutely self was outcoached in that game by Izzo, I just don't think self cared as much about the score

You make a valid argument regarding the Kansas/MSU game, but my point was that I think in most cases a loss isn't about coaches being outcoached, but more about players being outplayed.

I agree...but when you have similar talent, coaching is the difference.

So two teams with similar talent play, one team has a bad shooting night, coaching is the difference? I'm not sure it's that cut and dry.

It's way too high with the way they are playing now

Watching with my friends, one thing we were talking about was the soft-ass non-conference schedule. Not so much the fact they only played two truly good teams, but the fact they rarely left home. One road game and two on neutral courts (would have been three, but the Marquette one was canceled). On the other hand, Illinois had played a lot of road/neutral games thanks to being in one of those west coast tournaments.

Just seems this team is nowhere near what they should be when they leave Columbus. A close loss to Duke, a blowout loss to Illinois and two closer-than-expected wins over lesser opponents in Rhode Island and Washington. Might be a 20/20 hindsight thing for me, but it just seems that part of Saturday has to be attributed to a schedule that's overloaded with home games against chumps to a crazy level.

I like that you immediately think of Duke anytime a basketball analogy needs to me made.

It seemed to make the most sense and made the most dramatic point that all could understand. Coach k is the winningest college basketball coach of all time and his teams lost to rosters that were inferior to his except for one player.I'm sure he knew how to stop Maynor and McCollum. Was he outcoached? Even I don't think that was the case.duke does not lose games because Coach k was outcoached.
  • Laley23
Not all loses are because a coach was outcoached. I think we can all agree on that. However, it can and has happened and it will happen again. Tom Crean was outclassed/outcoached this year already versus Butler.

Sometimes players just make plays (Maynor vs Duke comes immediately to mind), but sometimes you put those players in a position to make those plays easier (walk-on vs Hulls with no Zeller on the court in Butler/VCU).

I also think the use of timeouts and substitutions can be directly attributed to coaching. Switching of defenses until you find on that works. Not saying K is being outcoached here, but he is pretty stubborn in his ways despite them not working. Examples would be keeping the 4 corners offense going when you arent scoring and blowing a big lead...not doubling and staying in a man to man with little help principles when a mid major has just 1 or 2 players. etc.

I really didn't mean it as an insult to Matta, but moreso a compliment to Illinois and Groce. Illinois just seemed more ready for the game. Was the loss a result of something Matta didn't do? No. But Illinois was superior in every aspect.

I won't overreact to an OSU loss this year, because I don't think they are great. I think ranked 15 is about right, and there's nothing wrong with that. To Matta's credit, he spoiled us. We can't really expect them to compete for a NC year after year.
