9/15: Cal (1-1) @ OSU (2-0)

It was holding. The guy was trying to pull away from the Cal player but couldn't. These guys aren't magnetic, something was keeping the OSU player from running AWAY from the Cal player.

    Lack of effort?

From week one we've all said (myself included) that this poor tackling, missed assignments, dropped balls are all things that OSU can clean up, but the sad fact is that they are not getting cleaned up, they are getting worse each week. This was not a top tier PAC 12 team as was stated above, this team is terrible, they got beat by Nevada and nearly lost to Southern Utah. Maynard had completed about 40% of his passes coming into this game and Ohio State makes him look like Andrew Luck. The poor tackling what can you say. The Buckeyes made an effort today to not run Braxton but I didn't see anything else to take the place of his running. Why is Jordan Hall being taken out on passing downs, I thought that was his strong suit. (and Boren stays in, wow) I thought the Coaching was bad and the playing even worse, this looked just like last season. Urban"s trying but so far this team does not play with the urgency and intensity of their coach. Watch on pass plays, the players who are not the primary receiver don't even run a cut, they jog. This game was very disappointing and a huge step back. I always try to defend Ohio State's play but man this was just awful.

If it was holding, it's the same holding that happens in the trenches EVERY play. If your hands are inside and you're pushing a person who's back peddling, it'd be pretty easy for him to NOT break away.

I didn't think it was holding until he tried to turn around and he kept him from turning.

No, it's different. It's one thing to have your hands in that position when the guy is trying to go around or through you to get to the quarterback. But the second that guy tries to disengage and go the other direction (run play and the ball carrier is passing through the whole) and the guy can't disengage because the blocker won't let go that gets called holding.

That's what happened here. The blocker wouldn't let go of the person as he was desperately trying to disengage and go the other way. It was an obvious hold.

I can't remember the last OSU team that was this poor at tackling. They have a long way to go if they want to compete with MSU and Nebreaska in 2-3 weeks.

COLUMBUS -- Ohio State quarterback Braxton Miller was recognized today as Big Ten Conference offensive player of the week.
The sophomore threw four touchdown passes -- including a game-winning 72-yard pass to Devin Smith -- and ran for a 55-yard touchdown in the Buckeyes' 35-28 victory over California. Miller completed 16 of 30 passes for a career-high 245 yards and rushed for 75 yards on 12 carries.

I have to admit 5 touchdowns is terrific, but somehow I came away from that game uninspired by the offense and defense.

You won't get any argument from me. It seems to me that our players just aren't executing, which makes the offense look so inept and out of synch...I'm sure it'll get better--it has to :(

I'm guessing we all did. The offense had too many 3 and outs, aided by drops. Up 20-7, if they don't drop passes left and right, it may have gotten out of hand.
Defensively, youth is showing. Bad angles, tackling... Good news is, those things can be corrected. But they gotta step up and do it. We haven't seen it much, but I do believe at some point we will see aggressive play calling on the defensive side of the ball.
  • Midstate01
Also I've tried not to criticize the offense much because I don't feel like I know enough about the offensive scheme and such. Whereas with tress, you could call out what the next play was gonna be from your couch, and be right A LOT!

Is it just unrealistic expectations? I mean, if you were to tell me Braxton was going to score 5 touchdowns this weekend I would assume he's going to have a pretty good game. But that third quarter just left me feeling "meh".

We saw a bit of this Saturday, and I LIKED it....and I agree that we'll be amping it up more as the season progresses. The future is bright, that's for sure.

I mean for the most part we always have unrealistic expectations. But remember how BAD the receivers were last year. Even with Braxton throwing them better passes, they still aren't that great. Potential is there, but they aren't top notch.

A new coach, a new system, a young team...

These types of games will happen. It is what it is.

Sometimes bad teams stay in the game against good teams, especially when that good team still has A LOT of growing to do.

Agree. It's all about getting that consistency at this point. Offense and defense are both capable of looking great, but just can't do it consistently yet. It will come, and luckily we have this whole year to work and improve.

I do, because I told you guys how bad it would be with Drayton coaching them. Zach will be a good WR coach. I bet you will see improvement by the end of the season.

At Memorial Stadium, Cal fans might get ear-splittingly loud three times a game. On every Cal third down at the Shoe, the entire Ohio State crowd rose like a red wave and roared. If you're up high in the press box, you can feel the floor shiver.
"This has got to be the loudest we've heard," said Marshall, who travels to one road game each year with his friends. "Rocky Top is close."
Cal fans had been warned the legions of Buckeye faithful were hostile to opposing fans, but they were pleasantly surprised to be proven wrong at the game.

"They've been very hospitable," said Michelle Myers, a Cal alum from the East Bay. "We went out drinking with a private party at their tailgate."
Before and after the game, the famous Ohio State University marching band even played the Cal fight song, a gesture much appreciated by the small Cal contingent in attendance.

We chatted with some Cal fans at the Varsity Club before the game. One commented on how many beers my buddy and I had drank by 9:15 (there were like 12 empties on the table) and I replied "What the hell else is there to do?". Guess that sentiment spread through the Cal fans
