  I don't think there is any way you can put him above Woody. While Tressel did dominate Michigan, it was also during a weak period for Michigan. And Hayes absolutely takes the cake when it goes to National Championships.

  Michigan was weak when they had RR, but they were pretty good from 2001 - 2007.

  Hayes has more, but those were paper titles, not BCS titles. I don't think people were that excited about National titles during that time period. I could be wrong, but the people I know who were alive then cared more about winning the B1G and going to the Rose Bowl than what a group of voters thought.
  
  I think you can make an argument for Tressel, but IMHO the main reason he can't surpass Woody is because Woody was there for so long.

  Agree about Michigan. They weren't bad until RR (thanks Rich).

  Gotta be in the top 2. Not sure I can place him above Woody, but certainly is debatable.

  Okay, Michigan was definitely weak for RRod (a lot of Buckeye fans saw that coming). But I don't think they were exactly the best under the last few years of LLLoyd. There is a reason OSU fans started to spell his name like that. They had good teams but seemed to underachieve.

  Personally I think the best coach to ever coach Ohio State is Paul Brown. He would be on the Mount Rushmore of football coaches.

  Not sure I can agree to this. Now they have a system in place to at least match up the top teams. Back in Woody day, no system, no nothing except a poll. Hell, one year Nixon "basically" got to pick(persuade) the national champ. Something JoePa was not very happy with till the day he died.

  Number 2 behind Woody, but just because Hayes did it for so long. One day, Tressel will be revered the way Woody is now, despite the scandal. The things Hayes did, were much worse than a lie told by Tress.

  for what it's worth, tressel will always be my #1. but i think that has to do with the fact that he was the coach during my youth.

  JT logs in at #2 behind Wayne Woodrow for a couple reasons.
  
  Woody elevated the rivalry to heights we see it today. He coached Bo, taught him what he knew. Woody and Bo didn't have equal parts in elevating the rivalry because of this. In the end we found they had mutual respect for one another of course but "The Game" earned the #1 rivalry in all of sports due in no small part to Woody, three yards and a cloud of dust and bucause I couldn't go for three Hayes.
  
  National titles - Woody had a few, not sure why anyone would think it easier to earn one back then, there is still generally only one nationally recognized winner, whether vote on or in the current format.
  
  Both were great ambassadors of the university, cared more for the players above all else, had equal falls from grace. Woody's elevation of the program to national prominence "first" gives him the edge imo.

  JT sold out the program and put a few players ahead of the other members of the team. No other coach brought the scruitny and the shame to OSU that JT did. For these transgressions his name should be on the bottom of the list.

  1. More competition. With today's grueling recruiting and rules, there are more teams each year that high caliber. Seems in the "old" days there was a clear cut 1 or 2 teams.
  2. More media coverage. In the "old" days, the media coverage wasn't nearly as national and in-depth. Today, everyone knows about all the teams. Then, the biggest news was saved for the top, popular teams. There weren't any Boise States being talked about.
  3. The athletes. I think the athletic skill is much greater today, but there is also more of it. This means more talent to spread around. Kind of ties in with #1.
