2013 recruiting chatter

Andrew Wiggins apparently didn't like the recent articles about him not wanting attention or the spotlight.

He dropped 57 points and 13 rebounds last night.

Have you heard anything recently that makes you believe Wiggins is a Seminole lean? Just curious. You sound somewhat concerned about FSU being a legit contender. I just don't see it. I do understand your puzzlement, though, over why Wiggins just doesn't make a decision since he supposedly says he doesn't enjoy all the attention. Doesn't make any sense.

Re Wiggins parents being FSU alumni ... It's funny, after Jason Williams chose to attend Duke in the late '90s, one of the things that was repeated often about his recruitment was that both of Jason's parents were graduates of Ohio State, having met each other there and also (I believe) receiving post-graduate degrees from the university. That, of course, was during Jim O'Brien's run with Michael Redd. Despite all the success the Buckeyes were enjoying at the time, Ohio State never recruited Jason Williams. Guess they didn't need him with Scoonie Penn...

I think every notable recruiting insider considers him an FSU lean.

I think everyone else is trying to figure out why, and if so, why not commit to FSU? Why didn't he commit to FSU a year ago when he re-classified?

I mean the more visits he takes, the most time he waits, the better it bodes for UK, UNC or anywhere else. Everything with FSU has been on the table for years now...

The thing that is most strange is that even with Wiggins at FSU next year, the Seminoles will not have the pieces around him -- at least on paper -- to come close to a national championship. FSU is losing the only player of any real redeeming value on this year's 13-10 club in senior Michael Snaer, and most of the younger guys they do have are far from elite or simply raw and undeveloped.

At best, you are probably looking at an OJ Mayo at USC situation, where the first or second round is the team's peak. This will not be Carmelo Anthony redux. There are no Gerry McNamara's or Hakim Warrick's on the FSU roster. Perhaps somebody could develop into a Kueth Duany...
  • Azubuike24
    Agree with all of that.

Hence, why I think most will say FSU is the leader and has always been the destination.

Then logic kicks in and you wonder if he is simply going there to go through the motions and skip to the NBA. There is nothing to really benefit from at FSU.

    Nice game by Marc Loving:
Loving scores 42 to set Titans’ mark
    St. John's 78, Lima Senior 60

LIMA — (Ohio State commit) Marc Loving poured in 42 points to set a single-game scoring record Friday night as the Titans clinched at least a share of the Three Rivers Athletic Conference crown.
Loving broke Shane Komive's record of 41 points set in 1991.
The Titans (18-3, 12-1 TRAC) were tied with the Spartans at 18-all at the end of the first, and held a 34-31 lead at halftime.
However, St. John's extended its lead to nine by the end of the third quarter and raced past Lima Senior 26-17 in the fourth to seal the win.
Devon Allen and Isiah Simpson each had 19 points for Lima Senior (7-14, 4-9).

Let's hope the Dean Dome is rockin' that day. Something like the 2005 game would be nice.

That sucks. He'll be at UK on Wednesday for Mississippi State.

Scout has moved Duke signee and sharpshooter Matt Jones into the Top 25 of the 2013 class. With Jones now at #24, Semi Ojeleye (the all-time leading scorer in the state of Kansas, who is averaging 40 ppg this year) at #25 and Jabari Parker at #2, Duke jumps to Scout's No. 2 recruiting class behind Kentucky.

If UNC grabs Wiggins, ESPN will hype next year's Duke-Carolina game more than Michael Jackson's death. Parker vs. Wiggins. Duke vs. UNC. It will be crazy.

Was Ojeleye Duke from the beginning? Did he even look at KU?

It's crazy that the all-time kansas scorer isn't going to KU

Nevermind, looks like Self wasn't even going after him
Kansas University did not have Ojeleye on its recruiting list.

I would be completely fine with that. :D

Haha. I know Wiggins is made out to be a god, but I think the difference in skill between him and a healthy Parker (Parker played much of this season coming back from a foot injury) is minimal. They are No. 1 and No. 2 for a reason. So if UNC gets him, I won't be worried. I will just look forward to the show.

With that said, I hope he goes to Florida State and plays for an irrelevant team that has no chance at a championship.

I'd disagree. I've seen people state they would rank Parker, Randle or either Harrison twin at #2. I've also heard some people say Aaron Gordon, Kasey Hill and James Young could make an argument. It's usually those 8 guys in the top 5.

Maybe it's all hype, but I think Andrew Wiggins is that good. The guy immediately went to #1, by every service, when he re-classified. Most of the time, those sites like to vary it up for shock value. Not this year. Some have said Wiggins is the best all-around athlete and talent since LeBron. Those are huge shoes, but still.

Lets say this though about the 2013 class. You could argue that the top 8 I mentioned + Shabazz and Noel, would make up the top 10. The 2013 class is absolutely stacked compared to this year. After this year, I think you're going to see people thinking that high school players aren't as dominant. Think again. They WILL dominate the sport next year. You might have 3 or 4 high school kids be All-Americans.

I'll post my thoughts on Duke in the proper thread.

We've been over this before. The same thing has been said about Parker.

I don't know who is better. Perhaps Wiggins is. That's fine. I just don't think he dwarfs the talent of Parker, as you seem to think.
  • Azubuike24
He doesn't. I can't say for sure either, I don't watch either on a regular basis. All I'm saying is everyone has said this class, overall, is crazy. I mean the top 10 or so it nuts.

Lots of subjectivity, but can you remember a time where a guy re-classified to a year earlier and immediately went to the #1 player by EVERY service? He hasn't budged in 8 months and likely won't, when final rankings come out.

I can't recall that, and like I said before, he's got half a dozen guys behind him who have blown up at different times as well. It's not like he's heading a weakened class.

Maybe it's a slight "observation bias" because I still can't get over the Wiggins performance at the 2012 Nike Hoops Summit. He was not a one man show like Shabazz...and he was literally the best PG, SG and SF in the game. At least to my eyes.

We can agree to disagree...I will say though, next year's class will bring back the faith in Freshman that has waned a bit this year.

    I'm really torn about Wiggins.

If he doesn't come to UK, it's obvious to not want him at UNC. FSU is not a contender nor will they be a contender. However, I love college basketball too much to want such an elite talent going to such a situation.

Imagine Wiggins to UNC, Randle to UK. I know Duke/UNC will be great, but UK/UNC in Chapel Hill might end up topping last year's game in-terms of how many future 1st rounders are on the court. It would certainly break a record for Burger Boys on the court at once. If Randle comes to UK, UK would have at least 7 on the roster (excluding Goodwin, Poythress and Noel).

Carolina could have Reggie Bullock, P.J. Hairston, James McAdoo, Marcus Paige, Dexter Strickland, Isaiah Hicks and Kennedy Meeks.
  • reclegend22
On the other hand, if Duke were to play UNC (with Wiggins), the Blue Devils would have Andre Dawkins, Rasheed Sulaimon, Amile Jefferson, Marshall Plumlee, Quinn Cook, Jabari Parker and Matt Jones as McDonald's All-Americans. So that's seven to match North Carolina's seven (if everyone comes back and Wiggins is signed).

Edit: Andre Dawkins WOULD have been a McDonald's All-American, but could not since he left high school early. Momentary memory lapse. So that's just six for Duke.

Check out this dunk. You have to watch it in slow-mo to really appreciate it. It's Vince Carter-esque, but the most impressive thing? He's hitting it from a complete jump stop and jumping with 2 feet.

    #14 in black...poor kid.

Don't know where else to put it but Nigel Hayes just absolutely embarrassed the 6'10" kid from springfield on a dunk. Hopefully someone got good video.
