OSU Offseason Thread

    Actually, I just read that we are at 82 now... so now it's just a matter of graduating seniors and who leaves (I believe).

    Important takeaways:
    • Around 20 spots for the class of 2013
    • Most likely to commit:
      • QB - Malik Zaire*
      • RB - Derrick Green
      • WR - Shelton Gibson*
      • WR - Robert Foster*
      • TE - Mike Heuerman*
      • TE - Adam Breneman / Josh McNeil
      • OL - Ethan Pocic
      • DL - Joey Bosa
      • LB - Courtney Love*
      • LB - Jaylon Smith
      • DB - Caleb Day*
    I put asterisks (*) next to the ones I think we likely land (i.e., > 75% chance).

    Breneman is announcing next week I think and will likely end up at Penn State.

    Yea I think most think he's allll psu. There is talk that he's taking a 2nd visit to osu this weekend. But nobody can confirm it. But regardless he's looking like a psu guy

    Can't really blame him, grew up a fan and Pats TEs were pretty successful. PSU is starting to pick up some recruiting momentum.

    I don't think Zaire, Breneman, Smith or Day end up as Buckeyes for various reasons.

    Zaire - OSU is sitting good with Texas QB JT Barrett and Zaire wants to commit early. I think Urban wants to take a shot at a better rated prospect than Zaire.

    Breneman - PSU. Josh McNeil deserves an * next to his name.

    Smith - Despite what OSU insiders say, I don't feel confident about OSU's chances. Unless Rod Smith makes an impact this year, I doubt Jaylon comes to OSU. If his brother weren't involved, I'd feel a LOT better about OSU's chances. But you cannot never count Urban out.

    Day - Not sure he has an offer at this point. I think there are a few other CBs higher up on OSU's board.

    I'd add Tashawn Bower and Greg Webb to that list, as well. And it wouldn't surprise me if Love committed this weekend.

    Zaire WANTS to be a Buckeye. The question with him is, does the staff WANT him?

    Barrett is 134, Zaire is 136. There's really not a difference between the two. I think the staff is waiting for camp to see them throw in person.

    Breneman does seem like a heavy PSU lean.

    I'm not familiar enough with McNeil's recruitment to say one way or the other.

    I completely agree about Smith. I think it all comes down to his brother, Rod. If Rod leaves, Ohio State's chances drop to virtually zero. If Rod Stays, OSU's chances rise to somewhere around 50%. If Rod makes a significant contribution, Jaylon to OSU is probably closer to 75%.

    As for Day, I've read nothing but good things for Ohio State. Seems like Day would really like to be a Buckeye. He does have an offer (verbal), but it is not a commit-able one at the moment.

    Love will be a Buckeye soon.

    I too think it's only a matter of time before Webb announces Ohio State.

    As for Bower, I'm not familiar enough with his recruitment to say one way or the other. Just don't know enough about him.

    Barrett will be visiting on March 12. Says a lot when a QB from Texas will come up to Columbus and visit on his own dime.

    OSU coaches like RB

    Brionte Dunn.....and if he can hold on to the ball in the Spring he will more than likely be the guy starting in the Fall....

    they really like what this guy brings to the offense, and his approach to playing football.....

    I have a hard time believing this. Jordan Hall, Carlos Hyde, and Rod Smith are all ahead of Dunn. Yes Hall is certainly a candidate to move to the slot, leaving just Hyde and Smith... and yes there have been rumblings about Smith not being able to get it done... but I gotta believe Hyde would start over true freshman Bri'onte Dunn. Not saying it couldn't happen... just saying there are better candidates.

    Not to mention that is a pretty bold statement for a player who has yet to put on the pads for OSU. If it was AFTER spring ball maybe.

    28 players were shown to have gained weight from the roster released prior to the Gator Bowl. Double-digit gainers were:

    * Kenny Hayes (up 45 pounds to 285)
    * Chase Farris (up 21 to 286)
    * Reid Fragel (up 18 to 298),
    * Conner Crowell (up 13 to 233)
    * Nick Vannett (up 13 to 248)
    * Ken Guiton (up 11 to 206)
    * Steve Miller (up 10 to 255)
    * Curtis Grant (up 10 to 235)
    * Ryan Shazier (up 16 to 226).

    On the flip side, there were 20 players listed at a lower weight than the previous roster.

    * Johnathan Hankins (down 18 pounds to 317)
    * Joel Hale (down 15 to 285)
    * John Simon (down 10 to 260)
    * Nathan Williams (down 11 to 249)
    * Corey Linsley (down 18 to 292)
    * Tommy Brown (down 10 to 310)
    Cool stuff

    45 pounds in 3 months? That doesn't seem healthy.

    Some of the weights were reportedly off from that roster.

    There was something about Chris Carter losing 30 pounds but is listed as being up 8 from the Gator Bowl roster.

    Wait till shazier gets to 240. He's gonna be huge!
  • Pick6
    Shazier will be the next great LB to come out of OSU.

    Notes from the first day of practice

    Offense
    Maybe the most impressive looking player on the field coming out of winter conditioning was senior Reid Fragel. The former tight end was working as the first-team right tackle on day one, and he looks like an NFL tackle. Meyer said he is 298 pounds now with less than 10 percent body fat, which is incredibly impressive for a 6-8 kid.
    Senior Jordan Hall took the most snaps with the first-team offense, followed by Rod Smith and then Carlos Hyde. It seemed liked Hall and Smith were best suited for the style offense Ohio State is going to run.
    One of the biggest issues during Wednesday’s practice was the lack of consistency from the guys catching those passes. Meyer was not impressed with the skill position players on day one, saying he should be walking off the field thinking "wow" about 2-3 guys.
    The first practice for Braxton Miller with the new coaching staff looked a lot like the old practices, except for some of the different things they asked him to do with the football. It’s clear that Miller is going to excel in the read-option, and there were a number of times he broke open on a quarterback keeper (albeit on a non-contact day without full pads).
    Miller’s throwing was good, but he is still inconsistent with his ball placement. His timing was better, and he hit 8-10 straight dump-off passes with perfect precision. As a whole, Guiton actually had the better day throwing the ball.
