Duke @ Ohio State

  • GOONx19
Ohio State is better than I thought. I only saw the first half, but the shooters looked great. I wouldn't want to have to play them, even with the talent Kentucky brought in this year. Sullinger is a man among boys in the post.

This. Overall, I thought swamisez's post was pretty good, until I got to the officiating whine. Coach K is a master of manipulation when it comes to the stripers, so for a Duke fan to bitch about the officiating is just plain assinine.

Buckeyes are good no doubt but I try to keep my feelings in check as it is only Nov. Will be different teams come tourney time that is when it matters but still enjoyed the win. Gonna be an exciting year. Go Bucks!

Coach K was still whining to the refs with 30 secs left down 22.

Did you watch it? Coach K had his little whining fit, then the officials promptly call three ticky tack fouls. Duke was in the bonus early in the 2nd half.

Not bitching about the officiating, it is part of the game. Duke cannot be successful if they have to play a game that is called like that. Has been a problem since the mid 2000's. I am sure K has realized this and recruits the players he does for the reasons he does. Everyone in America knows that if Duke has to play an athletic physical team they are going to lose. Do you think its some marvel they beat Butler in the national title game in 2010 but got waxed by Arizona in 2011?

As for the whistles, this happens in every televised game that isn't close. Duke wasn't getting calls because they are Duke, they were getting calls because the game needs to be a little closer to keep people from turning the channel. The first call was the obligatory "i'll blow the whistle so we can get the under 12 TV timeout." same thing would have happened in front of the OSU bench at any point from 11:45 to 11:35. Like clockwork officials have to mind television timeouts. Sad to say but it is true.

The same fouls will be called in tonights Carolina Wisconsin game. If a team stretches a lead calls will be made to keep it from getting out of hand. Its not because of some coach, its because it keeps people watching. The only time I see nationally televised games get out of hand like that are when CBS has back to back games on Saturdays, then you see them switch to another game and Duke can lose to Georgetown or St.Johns by 35+

and a lot of people on here were whining about the refs with OSU up 23. What's your point?

I'd be disappointed if he were just sitting there taking it. Wouldn't you want Matta to keep fighting regardless of how much time is left?

Fighting and being whiny are two very different things. As a Duke fan though, I wouldn't expect you to know that because you guys dismiss anything negative said about him. For how good Coach K is, he's also an insufferable whiner.

    Fixed.

And you were all class until you bitched about the officiating. Pretty funny coming from a Duke fan.

That's your opinion obviously. I would tend to say that Matta is quite the same as K. Following the 2004 Xavier game he echoed the same complaints about officiating, insinuating it cost his team a trip to the final four. I would call that fighting for his team, you would call it whining apparently.

I don't think swami is bitching about the officials calling the game purposely in OSU's favor. I just think he is pointing out that if the officials allow a more physical game that favors the Bucks (and really most B1G teams v ACC teams).

If D. Thomas keeps playing at this level, OSU will be very tough to beat. When Thomas plays like that and Craft goes 3-3 from downtown, they are virtually unbeatable.

Its not even OSU's specifically, if any game is officiated where physicality is allowed on ball screens and players can body up that much so far away from the basket, Duke is gonna go down. Seth Curry is just another in the line of Greg Paulus, JJ Redick, Trajan Langdon's. Catch and shoot players who can't function where that much contact away from the ball is permitted.

Neither do I. I was only posturing about Coach K's undeniable whining.

way to slam the guy defending your post :(
  • swamisez
What's crazy, here in North Carolina the officials don't allow that kind of play at the high school level either, so games are pretty fast. When I go back to Ohio for the holidays I always am amazed a how physical the game is. Referees seem to let it go on. Is this a case where perception is reality, or does reality mirror perception?

The arrows point to your post above mine. (the one where you value more elite 8 whining than november)

    Which has since been deleted.

C'mon, as a Duke fan you have to admit that Duke gets the calls the vast majority of their games. I'll freely admit that Sullinger is getting calls this year that he would never have gotten last year. Winning teams and great players always get the benefit of the doubt. The way the game was officated didn't hurt Duke, the lack of athleticism and a true PG did.

I don't think Swamisez is bitching about the officiating. I think he is pointing out that duke is a finesse team that will suffer if the refs are letting them play. Except for the 3 ticky-tack fouls that were called after Coach K bitched, I think the refs let them play so the players determined the outcome.

I think Coach k quit when he benched Kelly, Dawkins, and Curry. I am sure it was a teaching moment, but he could not honestly say he thought the team he had on the floor was capable of mounting a comeback. At that point I was begging for Matta to run another defender at Rivers to get the ball out his hands and let Cook airball another 3.

The calls didn't benefit OSU any more than duke, but the style of the game dictated by the calls did favor OSU's athleticism, and strength.
