Will ND "compete for National Championships" with kelly?

  • sleeper
Quoted directly from the ND AD Swarbrick. He said he thinks Kelly will help Notre Dame compete for National Championship. LOL WHAT?!

Seriously, whatever this guy is smoking I need to buy some. Heck, Brian Kelly went UNDEFEATED and still is not playing for a National Title and this CLOWN thinks he can go to ND and make them competitive?

Let me remind everyone that this is the team that's only bowl win the the last 15-20 years is against a depleted 6-6 Hawaii team. Little advice for ND, maybe you should realize the only thing you will be competing for is minor bowl games year after year and you can take that to the bank.

Thoughts? Do any ND fans actually think Kelly will compete for NC, much less win them?

Kelly is the first legit hire since Holtz. It will take a couple years, but they will be really good.

Then what was Weis? I mean, please don't tell me he people weren't absolutely praising the hell out of this guy the day he was hired, and especially after he led them to 2 BCS bowls(which remember, they got BLOWN OUT in). Kelly is no different, and you can take that to the bank.

With the water down schedule they have next year they should be able to qualify for a bowl game but the biggest question is well they opt not to play again?

Let me remind people of a guy named Jim Tressel. People we're sceptikal of him when he was hired b/c of his only coaching 1AA but thats turned out pretty well. Let's not be so quick to judge what Kelly does. I can't stand Notre Dame but college football is better when they are winning and when Michigan is winning. As much as I think he's kind of a POS, I think he will succeed there.

I understand that, I'm just saying in time. I don't expect him to win instantly, if he does then WOW guy is flat out good but I think he could get things rolling there.

And what was Wies's record as a head coach? Case rested.

Kelley is the first hire since Holtz...whereby a proven winner is brought in.

Didn't Willingham come pretty highly regarded when hired? He was pretty successful before he went to ND, no?

No he was basically a 500 coach at Stanford and ND got kind of backed into taking him after the O'Leary debacle.

Ty Willingham never won more than 9 games in his 7 years at Stanford, and this is the Pac-10 BEFORE the reign of Pete Carroll and USC. Brian Kelly has had double digit wins ALL THREE years at Cincinnati.

Im pretty sure the AD wasnt expecting him to be in the NC next year so that comment is pretty well dumb.

As far as u asking how he is legit. How was Urban Meyer legit after BG and Utah?? How bout Bob Stoops when he was never a head coach until Oklahoma? or maybe Mack Brown going 69-46 in 10 years at UNC before heading to Texas??

Fact is Kelly has won everywhere he has been. GVS he won 2 national championships. He turned Central Michigan into a winner while he was there and went 34-6 at Cincinnati.

Do I think he is going to win NCs in the next couple of years? No. Its going to take a few years to get there.

Kelly was a panic hire becuz they knew a mid major guy wouldn't turn them down.
  • newarkcatholicfan
It appears he was number three on the list.
I think this speaks very loud in just how far this storied program has fallen in today’s college football world.

Sorry about that and thanks for letting me know.
I left a link a site with his coaching stats.

"He was the first person I talked to, he was the only person I offered this oportunity to..."

    from AD Swarbrick.

the first person they interviewed was a panic hire? amazing.
  • newarkcatholicfan
    Sure he wasn't.

It's the first person Jack Swarbrick talked to. This means the agency Notre Dame used contacted a myriad of agents about the opening. However this doesn't mean Notre Dame didn't have an affinity for Brian Kelly. I'm sure though they'd rather have Urban Meyer or Bob Stoops, but that doesn't mean Notre Dame isn't happy with Brian Kelly. Asking what Meyer and/or Stoops thought of the opening is one thing; offering/begging for them to accept the job is different. I'm convinced Meyer was content at Florida and Stoops was just tepid with the idea of coaching at Notre Dame. That doesn't mean jack shit. If Brian Kelly is the 100th pick, I don't care. Just win.

I just wanted to clarify for people so that we don't get this thread off track. The AD said "compete for National Championships" but he didn't say anything about winning them. I don't think any sane person could argue that ND is on pace to win National Titles, just "compete for" which probably means getting BLOWN out in any BCS bowl they get too.
  • sjmvsfscs08
You mean like a 41-14 loss to Florida or a 38-24 loss to LSU in a BCS National Championship Game?
  • killer_ewok
Maybe they will. Maybe they won't. I sure as hell hope so but I don't know for sure.
