Urban Meyer Not Interested in Arizona Job

I understand what you are saying, but what other names are being discussed.

It's not Meyer or someone else. It's just Meyer.

I'm not a huge fan of him, but it's reality that OSU fans want him. He's the only guy talked about publicly. If not him, then who can they hire that is of his equal?

I'd argue the opposite of that actually. You saw it happen with the Tress fiasco. He was clearly in the wrong, covered some stuff up, got us in trouble, and you still had/have people defending him and making excuses for him.

Just stop with the Fickell nonsense.

Please tell me WHY other than the fact that he's been with OSU, makes you think we should keep this guy? His coaching horrible, his adjustments are terrible, his in-game managent is horrible, and his game plans are bland.

Maybe desperate was the wrong word, because you are taking it further than I meant. But Columbus really wants Urban Meyer.

Again, he's the Lebron James of free agency. Sure OSU will take Amare or Bosh, but Meyer is the prize.

Obviously nobody really knows at this point. Meyer comes up because he doesn't have a job now and has Ohio roots.

IMO you're going to have alot of currently employed coaches reach out about this job. Probably many that you would not expect to be interested. And probably some that already have decent head coaching jobs.

To suggest that if Meyer turns down the job, we'll end up with a quality control assistant coach at Wake Forest is laughable though. This is a huge job. People will be interested

No one logically thinking, thinks Fickell deserves this job.

Who? Honestly, the only guys that fans would possibly prefer are Saban, Stoops, Gundy, Gruden and NFL head coaches.

Ironically, I would not expect anything but this response from you.

Who gives a shit what fans want? Fans overwhelmingly wanted Mason in early 2001.

One thing I know for certain is I don't want Gene Smith involved in the search, hiring, interviewing...anything

Get his ass gone and then we'll see where we're headed.

While true, I'm not so sure they are going to be able to risk finding lightning in a bottle twice on successive attempts.

Its not even that. Mason just wasnt the best choice despite what fans wanted.

I think OSU's hiring list looks like:

    Urban Meyer

    Bo Pelini (unfortunately)
    Mel Tucker/Luke Fickell

To me, OSU should do everything possible to land Meyer. He instantly brings credibility and his resume can only be matched a one or two others in college football today. It really is a no-brainer. And I agree with the sentiment that it is "Urban or bust." I, for one, will be disappointed if OSU can not land him. The guy is a proven winner at every program he has been at, including at an elite college program in the toughest conference in the nation. His health concern is the major wildcard. Although OSU is a top job, I don't think the stress level will be as high for him compared to his coaching experience in the SEC. OSU's schedule in the coming years is not difficult, especially the next two years. The BIG is down. Penn State is a mess.

My prediction is that we are less than three weeks away from Urban being named the head coach at OSU. OSU will take the week of the BIG Championship game to interview candidates, then name the coach the following week. I'll officially guess December 6th.

The Board cares what fans want. Don't kid yourself. Tressel wasn't fired until after the fan base turned on him.

The board doesn't care as much as many fans want to think they do. They are going to do what they think is best for the University and the Football program. They aren't going to create a PR nightmare by hiring someone that obviously the media and fans would take an absolute disliking to (like a Butch Davis or someone like that), but the fans list of coaches they want most likely isn't and shouldn't be a high consideration for who the Board interviews and selects. If they cared as much as the fans want to think they do, Glen Mason would have been hired in 2001.

Weren't a lot of people also talking Mike Belotti and Fred Pagac in 2001?

Because he hasn't been given a fair shake. I know most of you guys nut at the thought of Urban Meyers' slicked back hair and deep voice, so there's nothing I can say that will change your minds.

As 2nd and 3rd choices after Mason

All the analysts on 610 want Fickell, even Earle Bruce (who Urban coached under and they are still good friends to this day)

thedynasty1998;975895 wrote:Big part is debatable. Fickell will be fine, but this is OSU. You don't offer jobs because you feel an obligation to a guy. You have a responsibility to find the absolute best guy for the job.
You're right, the guy who is known as one of the best recruiters in the country, and puts out one of the best LB cores in college football year in and year out, probably played a small part in the teams success. I mean, do we really want a guy taking 3* talent and making them NFL LB'ers?? Sometimes your lack of knowledge is astounding.

Ohio State fan here- desperate for Urban Meyer. Will be bitterly disappointed if they don't get him. The only other coach on par with him in my eyes is Chip Kelly.

Chip Kelly?! You mean the guy who has never won a bowl game?

Cross Gary Pinkel off the list. He was arrested for DWI last night.
