Fickell and Jim Caldwell need to have a "deer in the headlights" staring contest next week

The fans don't desperately want "Urban Meyer"...they want a proven commodity that won't run the program 10 years into the crapper a la RichRod. He's available, he likely won't want nor receive a long term contract, OSU is an attractive job and we can afford him.

Desperation isn't something Ohio State has much experience with.
Yes they do. This thread proves it. Every time I hear Spielman on the radio, I hear him being asked about Meyer. Honestly, if OSU doesn't land Meyer, there will be people disappointed.

Heck, there were rumors (don't tell LJ they are rumors) that Meyer bought a house here. How is that not desperate?

They definitely should let go of Fickell after 1 bad season. I wish OSU would've fired Tressel after his bad first season. That National Championship, the NCG appearances, and all of those B1G titles have really pissed me off over the past 9 years.

Is 100% of Columbus on board with Meyer? Of course not. But a majority of fans desperately want him.

Just a little bit of a difference between Tressel and Fickell, don't you think? Tressel had success as a head coach prior to being hired by Ohio State. Fickell needs head coaching experience. Also, it's pretty evident that Fickell has even less of a gameplan than Tressel ever did. Fickell just gives the deer in headlights look. I don't know if I ever saw Tressel with that look even when the going got tough.

I never understood this criticism of Meyer. He leaves for a better job and he's running away? He leaves Florida, a place he's worshipped at and is paid well and people say he quit. He didn't quit, he just needed some time away.

    * Tress had head coaching experience.
    * Tress appeared to be prepared for the job during the games.
    * The job never looked "too big" for Tress.
*Tress was an actual head coach. Not just a defensive coordinator with a new title (Fickell still refuses to get in Bollman's ear).

    I can keep going?

Use some common sense. It has more to do with his Ohio ties and his availability than desperately wanting Urban Meyer. Hell, put Pellini in the same situation and we'd be talking about him. There isn't anything desperate about talking about available coaching replacements with Ohio ties.

Two of the jobs that poster listed were Utah and Bowling Green. Not exactly college football meccas. Plus, there's that whole "who wants to live Bowling Green" thing

Fickell wasn't even the defensive coordinator. Heacock runs the show over there.

Exactly. Fickell was given the top slot as a "figurehead". He was going to be given the ax all along IMO.

Isn't this what fanbases, especially passionate fanbases do? Haha fans are going to talk about candidates when they are in-line for a new coach. It's a fairly normal occurrence?

(I'm trying to figure out where dyansty is going with this)

Should Ohio State fans keep their choices to themselves? Do you think Meyer is listening to Columbus talk radio??

Pelini won a national championship? Don't fool yourself into thinking Meyer isn't the Lebron James of free agency.

It's a fact that OSU fans desperately want Meyer. And it's nothing to be ashamed of. If not him, then who? The fact that he's the only name people talk about tells you everything.

He was given the reigns for 5 games, he prepared for that I guess...too bad it turned into 12.

Sure there's a difference, Tressel never had to face the obstacles that Fickell has had to deal with. I don't like the thought of firing a guy that has invested 10yrs and been a big part of the teams success, over a season that he's had very little control over.

I don't mean desperate as a bad thing. I'm saying at this point, it's Meyer or bust. Columbus wants him. He's the top free agent and OSU would be foolish not to to offer him the house.

Well...apparently it's another one of his facts without substantiation we're going to have to rely on for direction.

Big part is debatable. Fickell will be fine, but this is OSU. You don't offer jobs because you feel an obligation to a guy. You have a responsibility to find the absolute best guy for the job.

Not firing. We would be not renewing him.

This is Ohio State. This is not a job where you can learn on the job. The program is going to be in trouble and you need to get somebody in here who has experience driving a ship the size of Ohio State.

He needs to go get his feet wet at a smaller program and prove he has head coaching chops. Nobody should ever just be given a job, especially when it is a hire out of empathy or emotion. (see WVU, Bill Stewart)

    Without landing the big U?

Yes. I was exaggerating by saying bust. But when ameyer's name is in the discussion, it's not ground breaking to bring in a assistant from elsewhere.

who said anything about us hiring an assistant if they don't get Meyer?

You seem to think that somehow Ohio State and the fanbase is going to go all rolled-up-in-a-ball-fetal-style whilst sucking thumb and wetting itself if they don't land Meyer...that is factually baseless, and laughable.
