The only team I've seen us play multiple times that I have a winning record against are Purdue (2-1) and Stanford (2-0) I believe unless I'm missing anything. The Purdue loss was the first time they had beaten us in like 12 years though. The class below me did not see us beat any team twice during their four years minus Purdue unless they went to the Navy away games I thinkTobias Fünke;942745 wrote:haha dude stop going to games, please.
Edit: Strike that- if they traveled to Washington in 08, Stanford in 07, or BC in 10 they may have seen us a beat a team twice... -

Definitely run the ball. Imo BK was shell shocked by being down a quick 14 and completely abandoned the run. The whole offense is designed to be most successful with a good running attack. Rees will never be successful if ND passes the ball 90% of the time. Hopefully ND bounces back in a big way after completely laying an egg against SC. -
Con_AlmaNavy lacks team speed defensively this year. They have an extremely talented d-Linemen in Tuani but other than that struggle elsewhere.
They can't score in the red-zone and have been uncharacteristically undisciplined which has costs them in the tight games. If the qb Proctor can't go this team will struggle mightily in this game.
Even if Proctor is available ND wins this one by three scores. -

Yeah they are. This is not a good Navy team. I stated they would struggle this year after spring practice.Mulva;942712 wrote:Navy isn't as bad as their record. 4 losses by 3 points or less.
Not a game Notre Dame should have trouble with though.
The close game losses are a result of poor red-zone execution and stupid, undisciplined penalties. They have no passing attack which would be a problem if they were cleaner in the triple. They are not good enough to get away with no passing this year. There defense stops no one.
If Proctor doesn't play this could be ugly. -

I couldn't remember exactly what I had read a while back. Confused a suspension with a dismissal. That's why I asked. -
TiernanND will have its way finally against a very sub-par Navy team this year. Potato Eaters by 20+

Con_AlmaSome cool game notes.
When these two teams meeting Saturday continue the longest continuous intersectional rivalry in the country.
A win would lead Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo to become the first coach in school history to beat Notre Dame three-consecutive times. He would also join Wayne Hardin as the only Navy coach to beat Notre Dame three times total (Hardin beat Notre Dame in 1960, 1961 and 1963). This is, however, is not likely.
Navy enters Saturday with the country’s third-best rushing attack, averaging 325.1 yards per game. Notre Dame is 58th in the country in rush defense (148.3 yards per game).
Notre Dame wide receiver Michael Floyd is ninth in the country in receptions per game (8.1) and 23rd in receiving yards per game (95.3). Notre Dame’s George Atkinson III is ninth in the country in punt returns (30.4) and Manti Te’o is tied for 21st in the country in tackles.
Notre Dame sports the 46th-best rushing offense (172.1), is ranked 32nd in passing offense (266.7) and 29th in total offense (438.9). The Irish are averaging 30.1 points per game (50th in the country).
The mark of a good team is having the ability to win away from home. Navy is 38-24 (.613) in games played away from Annapolis over the last nine years, which is the 13th-best mark in the country.
Navy has made 28 trips inside the red zone in its seven games this season, scoring 20 times (.714), including 15 touchdowns (.536).
The Mids have struggled mightily in the red zone over the last four games, scoring on just 13 of their 20 trips (.650) including only nine touchdowns in those 20 trips (.450). This has been one of their biggest problems this year!
Navy is 108th in the country in red zone offense, while Notre Dame is 110th.
The Mids are tied for 48th in the country in red zone defense. Notre Dame is also tied for 48th. Hmmmmm.
The Mids have outscored the opposition 134-101 in the second half (including overtime).
Since 2003, Navy owns an 18-23 (.439) record against schools from a BCS conference. The 18 wins against BCS schools during that time period are the most by a non-BCS school.
Navy head coach Ken Niumatalolo is 7-10 (.412) against teams from a BCS conference.
Navy has beaten at least one BCS opponent in eight-consecutive years, which is the second-longest active streak in the country by a non-BCS school. TCU has had at least one BCS win in nine-consecutive seasons.
Navy is No. 1 in the country in fewest penalties per game (2.3) and penalty yards per game (20.7). -
karen lotzKLM is for sure out for the season. His MCL completely separated from the bone and doctors had never seen that before. He's out 4-6 months from whenever he has surgery. Ethan Johnson should be able to go but will be limited. Tuitt is listed as a starter at DE with Hounshell backing up him. Rees will be fine, he hyperextended his knee which he had happen in the bowl game and also in high school so he is used to it. Motta was cleared fully yesterday. Crist is still the backup QB and Hendrix will continue to get mixed in going forward. Practice will be live today and tomorrow.

Con_Alma...from a USNA press release. Thought it was appropriate for this week's game.
John Dowd is a two-time Academic All-American
For the seventh year in a row, the United States Naval Academy is one of the top schools in the country for graduating NCAA student-athletes.
Navy graduated 100 percent of its student-athletes in six of the 20 NCAA sports reported on and averaged 96 percent for student-athletes in all sports. Navy’s overall graduation success rate of 96 percent was tied for fourth among all schools in the Football Bowl Subdivision and was the best among the three Service Academies. The national average for NCAA Division I student-athletes is 80 percent. The graduation success rate measures those student-athletes that were enrolled from 2001-04 and graduated within six years.
"Our student-athletes continually strive to set the standard on the playing fields, in the classroom and in Bancroft Hall," said Naval Academy Director of Athletics Chet Gladchuk. "The support and encouragement they receive through the Commandant and his staff and the academic dean and all of our outstanding professors and instructors is extraordinary and provides tremendous motivation to be successful morally, mentally and physically. Our midshipmen clearly define the true meaning of student-athlete."

Con_AlmaWithout Proctor, the Mids have no shot against the Irish.
http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/mids-insider/post/kriss-proctor-a-long-shot-to-play-this-week/2011/10/24/gIQAZJWtDM_blog.html
"...Proctor is receiving treatment on the elbow and meeting with doctors several times daily. It’s unclear if or when Proctor will be cleared to resume football activity, and Niumatalolo said although it wouldn’t be ideal, Proctor could play even without practicing this week. The more probable scenario would have Proctor out until at least Nov. 11, when Navy plays Southern Methodist. That means Proctor would miss the final home game for the senior class on Nov. 5 against Troy.
“The thing that we’re concerned about is the kid’s been battling,” Niumatalolo said. “I mean he came back pretty quick from the last one. Just concerned that if he comes back quick, will it pop out again? You’re also concerned about the kid’s long-term health.” ..."
http://www.hometownannapolis.com/news/nas/2011/10/25-41/Sophomore-QB-on-deck-as-Navy-faces-Notre-Dame.html
"...Season-long starting quarterback Kriss Proctor is officially listed as questionable, but head coach Ken Niumatalolo conceded that "it's probably a long shot that he'll play this week." That would mean that Trey Miller would make his first career start in front of 80,795 fans at fabled Notre Dame Stadium...." -
Con_AlmaI am interested in the defensive game plan the Irish will present. Are they going to attack the triple option with a 3-4? I am reading some things that make me believe they will simply put a LB in the down position.
Any insight from ND folks? -
karen lotzThey play a lot of 4 man fronts and can either bring on another DE or have an OLB put his hand on the ground. They also had a safety play OLB against Air Force to get more athletic in space against the pitch.
-
Con_AlmaI get the safety at LB. I don't get the LB at DE
Navy also runs a 3-4 with a stud and rush linebacker. That rush linebacker frequently goes to a down lineman position but not for the purposes of stopping the run on a regular basis. It's a decided disadvantage and requires technique that LBs don't tend to work on or develop.
I am simply trying to understand what they are working towards with this.
It certainly has to be an edge guy. That will be irrelevant in the mid-line triple option with the fullback. In the veer triple option if ND has four down lineman the first person outside the b-gap is left unblocked so presumably this "hand on the ground linebacker" is the one. Is there an advantage to that and if so why only do it on one side?
I will certainly learn something this week watching this game. -
Con_Alma
In a true 3-4 the OLB doesn't have pitch man. He has QB with SS taking pitch.karen lotz;945908 wrote:...They also had a safety play OLB against Air Force to get more athletic in space against the pitch.

Thought this would be the case but it's now confirmed. Proctor not playing Saturday.
"Navy senior quarterback Kriss Proctor will not play this weekend because of a dislocated left elbow, Coach Ken Niumatalolo confirmed on Wednesday, meaning sophomore backup Trey Miller is set to make the first start of his career against Notre Dame in South Bend, Ind.
There had been a flicker of hope at the start of practice this week that Proctor would be able to play Saturday, but concerns for his long-term health compelled Niumatalolo to give the team’s leading rusher more time to heal from the recurring injury. It’s the fourth time Proctor has dislocated the same elbow. ..." -
karen lotzND doesn't play a true 3-4. They play a hybrid 3-4 with OLB's having the ability to put a hand in the ground depending on formation/personnel etc. They can also go to 4 down linemen fronts but having one starting DE out for the season and the other one unlikely to play very many snaps, I don't know how they will line up. Jamoris Slaughter, who is normally a safety, played on the line of scrimmage as an OLB for most of the Air Force game. He may not necessarily be assigned to the pitch, but he has better recovery ability than a 260 lb LB once the QB pitches the ball. Look at the first play Air Force ran offensively for proof of what he can do.
-
Con_AlmaMost colleges don't play a true 3-4 but rather a hybrid as you have explained. It's also what I explained with regard to a 4 man front with a rush linebacker. Navy does this routinely
The way you defend a triple option is exactly what you explained with a safety up and having pitch responsibility.... OLB on Qb and interior lineman pinching like crazy taking away the full back. In the recent past Notre Dame's interior lineman were coming up field instead of pinching and that left a double team on the inside backers which is why the fullback was picking up those big rushing plays.
My question wasn't about any of that but thanks anyway for your response.
