Hire Urban Meyer

My guess (and it's only a guess): is if there is contact going on, and I hope there is, it's being done by certain Board of Trustee members who are also big football fans. Perhaps they have used intermediaries and let Meyer know he's welcome to the job if he wants back in coaching; details can be worked out later.

Beyond that, there isn't a lot they can do right now without risking even more public speculation than is already happening. In the Internet age, it's easy to get word out if something happens to be seen or heard; granted, credibility is an issue, but that doesn't stop tongues from wagging.

I would hope that as soon as the UM game ends, Ohio State makes the announcement that they have entered into contract talks with Meyer for the position, and that they are able to firm things up quickly. That would give him a chance to still get a few key recruits into the fold before signing day. I would hope that if it isn't Meyer, they would follow this same formula, for the same reason.
His coach has the word "Interim" in front of his title, so I believe that would allow him to talk with/interview other coaches if he wanted.

I'm sure that the university has used back channels (have your people call my people kind of thing) or some sort of head hunter to reach out to Meyer. I'm convinced that at this point OSU already knows if Meyer is interested or not. If Meyer is set on staying out of coaching for a few years I'm sure he's already let OSU know and isn't even going to interview. If he is interested though, they already know that too.

I didn't think Fickell had the interim label. Regardless, everyone knows he's done the day after Michigan.

How did you not know that he was the interim? His contract was modifies to pay him more as the acting head coach, but he never interviewed or anything like that. He is still under contract as the co-Defensive Coordinator and Assistant Head Coach, and is serving as the interim head coach. You don't just make a guy the head coach after a coach resigns unless you performed interviews or he had already been named the head-coach-in-waiting.

He's the head coach with a 1 year contract

Oh, and Ohio State actually dropped the "interim" tag from Fickell's title a couple weeks ago. He's just the head coach, period. So: Does that mean he's the full-time guy, like, full-time?
Despite the semantics, the official answer is still "no." An Ohio State spokesman told a Buckeye website, the-Ozone, that "Luke is our head coach this year,"

They removed the "interim" tag a while back. Yet another genius move by Mr. Smith.

In retrospect, this whole thing was handled very, very poorly on so many levels. After the NCAA gives its final decision, I hope Smith is either fired or tenders his resignation.

There is ways to buy property and make it very diffcult to find out who purchased it, i.e. LLC, trust, LLC with a trust named as the agent. It could be done, but very difficult and sometimes would take a court order.

It's actually not hard at all. All of my properties are under a trust. It's hard when you have actual liens on the property.

I think it was a great move to try to add some stability to an ailing program.

It was a meaningless move and hasn't made a lick of difference. Anyone who follows football knew OSU would be looking for a new coach at the end of the season, regardless of Fickell's title.

Even if Fickell had turned out to be a savant and the Buckeyes were undefeated and rolling, odds are no recruits would be doing much differently than they are. Everyone is waiting on the NCAA report to see what happens, and it's not like any verbal commitments made are binding. Signing day isn't until February.

I mean for the team itself. A lot of these kids come from broken homes etc, come to a program, they lose their coach, their QB and have a microscope on them. Making Fickell the actual Coach is just trying to put some stability back into the team. It was a great move.

P.S. They can most definitely start interviewing and contacting coaches with Fickell still in place.
"Luke, we won't be renewing your contract as head coach when it expires, thanks"

Meyer, whose name has been linked to potential openings at Ohio State and Penn State, attended his daughter Gigi’s volleyball match at FGCU on Wednesday.“I’m trying not to look forward,” Meyer said. “I spent my whole life moving forward. I’m enjoying this game tonight. It would have to be a perfect situation. I wouldn’t do it just to do it.”

If he weren't interested, it would be easy to offer up a denial in plain, simple English. Therefore, it's pretty obvious that he has some amount of interest.

The penn state thing is interesting. Would penn st actually offer him the job?
  • Dr Winston O'Boogie
I agree with the posters who say that Fickell having the "interim" tag or not is irrelevant. I've never understood why that title gets so much attention in the coaching ranks. When you're in, you're the coach. If the school doesn't want you, they can fire you.

I'm not big on Urban Meyer. I don't think he's a bad coach, but I'm not sold on his genius either.

If it was open, yeah I'd think they would. Doesn't mean he'd accept it but I could see them offering. Before any of that happens, Joe Pa is going to have to step down. I don't see Penn State telling him to go, and he was quoted recently as saying he could see himself coaching for another 10 years.

I wouldn't be surprised if PSU stays in house and within the family. Jay Paterno is a pretty smart guy and he's been on staff for over 15 years.

I used to think along these lines. But when he's getting run over in practice, someone needs to step in so he doesn't hurt himself.

The PSU will be very interesting to see how it plays out. Even more interesting if it opens up the same year as OSU.

Are you saying it's not hard to find out or not hard to hide it?

I mean he's only won 2 national titles and won a BCS bowl at Utah while going unbeaten there. But no, he's not a genius.

That's what I'm thinking also. I don't see them pursuing anyone else unless jay turns it down?
  • HitsRus
I'm thinking Jay is being groomed for the job. Otherwise, he'd have taken a head coaching job somewhere already

Saw a friend I hadn't seen in a couple of years this weekend, a VP for Arbys, a BIG Ohio State booster. When we see each other we rarely talk football. As soon as he saw me he volunteered that Urban was going to be the Ohio State Head Coach next year, negotiations were in progress. I asked who his source was, he said he couldn't tell me, he wasn't even supposed to know. He says it's a GOOD source. I asked how sure he was, he said 99%
