I'm here and hadn't come back to this thread, so I didn't realize I was being strangled by my own words from when Meyer was battling the media over his health issues.

Yep, I had forgotten about his "I said, I said" stuff during his health issues -- and I'm still convinced he lied about something there.

I've mostly backed this guy all his career, even when a lot of OSU folks were saying some pretty nasty stuff about him -- especially after the championship game. That whole hospital thing seemed ridiculously unnecessary to me, and the media manager part couldn't understand why he just didn't come clean about what was going on (to end the speculation).

So, rip on me all you like for that. I still want him to coach at OSU, and I'm not aware of any NCAA issues (which is what I was really posting about on the "lie" issue...comparing him with what Tressel did) where he's been caught not being truthful. And that is more important when making this hire than some stupid stunt he may have pulled while in the throes of health issues and pressures from his job.

I don't mind if Meyer becomes OSU's coach, even if he does lie. I don't even think that Tressel should have been fired.
Not that I condone lying, but quite frankly, if you don't lie, or push the limits of cheating, you are probably not coaching a national championship team. Everyone is looking for an edge, and it is the nature of the job. The lying starts when a coach blows smoke up a recruit's ass...it continues when he looks into a parent's eye and tells them that he will take care of their kid. We see it evry week at press conferences...and we know they are lying, but we just roll our eyes and call it 'spinning the truth'.
Tressel is no worse nor better than almost all of the other top shelf CFB coaches. His problem is that he got caught. Let's face it, if Cicero had phoned JT instead of sending an E-mail, Tressel would probably have skated thru just like all the others, and no one would have cared. But he did get caught...and what he did after tells you all you need to know. No denials, no excuses, he stood up admitted he did wong and took the punishment that was meted out by his own university....fines and suspensions worth millions. That he lied to the NCAA knowing full well that to tell the truth would initiate the dog and pony show to follow...doesn't bother me anywhere near as much as coaches who lie to recruit players then yank their scholarship when they find someone better. I think you judge Tressel on balance with all the good he did. Good for the university, good for his players, good for charities, etc.

Everybody 'lies'...that's what confession is for.

Spielman was on the Fan today and was asked about Meyer. Without being asked, he said that Meyer has not bought a house in Upper Arlington. So, hopefully that can now be put to rest.

He was told to say that. Obviously.

About a month ago, maybe less, he said on air that Urban did own property in UA.

Really? I thought it was really random he even brought it up today. One way or another Spielman doesn't seem like the type to lie about it.

Yeah, I don't remember what they were talking about that day. But he was talking about how he had been working at with Urban and was saying how his health is great now and all this junk.

And Spielman said he bought a house in UA? What was the context?

He said something about the rumors and said that he had property in UA. Nothing about a house specifically. Then again, UA is so land locked that you would think it means house. I really don't remember the specifics of what they were talking about.

Really surprised Spielman would say that, if that is what was said.

I would think buying a house/property would be a matter of public record, and easy enough for investigative reporters to check.

From what I have heard he didn't buy a house, but some firm he has a stake in purchase property in Upper Arlington.

I heard Spielman last nite as well. I didn't catch the house discussion. But he did have some interesting things to say about Meyer. Obvioiusly, they spend quite a bit of time together. He said Meyer still has the itch to coach. But in the same sense, that stress certainly caused his health issues. Meyer is also linked to PSU. Although none of the rumors about some deal are true. Spielman felt that if Urban does want to go back into coach, that he would certainly be interested in the OSU jbo. He has many ties, coached there, and to this day has a picture of Woody hanging in his office/home. Never been a huge Meyer fan myself...that being said, with this record..I'd be lying if I said I don't want him as OSU coach. OSU would be stupid not to pursue him IMO.

I've relegated myself to accepting that Meyer will be the next coach at OSU. I won't like it, but I'll deal with it.

Whats the word in Columbus regarding OSU contacting Meyer by now? Of course no one will come out and confirm it, but what does everyone think?

I'd like to see a hire made asap.

If there is contact being made, it's not being done through any official channels. Obviously, Gene Smith cannot be seen contacting Meyer while he's still got a coach in place.

My guess (and it's only a guess): is if there is contact going on, and I hope there is, it's being done by certain Board of Trustee members who are also big football fans. Perhaps they have used intermediaries and let Meyer know he's welcome to the job if he wants back in coaching; details can be worked out later.

Beyond that, there isn't a lot they can do right now without risking even more public speculation than is already happening. In the Internet age, it's easy to get word out if something happens to be seen or heard; granted, credibility is an issue, but that doesn't stop tongues from wagging.

I would hope that as soon as the UM game ends, Ohio State makes the announcement that they have entered into contract talks with Meyer for the position, and that they are able to firm things up quickly. That would give him a chance to still get a few key recruits into the fold before signing day. I would hope that if it isn't Meyer, they would follow this same formula, for the same reason.
