Mizery turns down the SEC to stay in Big 12

  Missouri has turned down an opportunity to join the Southeastern Conference, leaving the league in search of a 14th member.
  
  The school announced Thursday it would remain part of the Big 12 after Texas apparently agreed to a more equitable revenue sharing arrangement that had led Texas A&M to leave the Big 12 for the SEC earlier this month.

  That's bad news for the SEC. Missouri would be their best program because they follow the rules unlike the other 12 members.

  This. The Big XII is having its cake and eating it too. Everyone gets equal revenue sharing, and Texas gets to receive its extra $$$$$ from LHN

  Could be. I have a feeling they would have been in for sure if ND would have joined when Nebraska did. Instead the B1G stopped at 12 to wait on ND before going to 14 with Missouri.

  More like everyone has a piece of cake....it's just Texas has a huge slice of cake. Which isn't really different than it was before.

  A big gain for the SEC. They didnt need Missouri. They should want a better all around sports school.

  Texas did have a bigger piece of cake. Now, they have the same size piece of cake, but they have an apple pie that they left at home for themselves.

  I wonder what this means for aTm. They can't join the SEC as the 13th member and just have at it. That'd be a nightmare for scheduling. How long do they wait? OR, do they say screw it and come back?

  The SEC will have no problem plucking a team from the Big East or ACC if they need 14. They could easily do 13 for awhile though, there are plenty of teams who play OOC games or have byes late in the season.

  They probably go for West Virginia, but if they do WV will really need to upgrade that defense to win very many games. Florida State or Miami would be perfect but I don't see either leaving the newly expanded ACC.

  The Big 12 still only has 9 teams though. So where do they look now? The 2 obvious choices would seem to be BYU and TCU (if they could lure them away from BYU-TV and Big East).
  
  Maybe pluck up a CUSA team as a 12th?

  No more of a nightmare than the Big 10 with 11 teams.
  
  The Big 10 and SEC have the money, they don't need to expand unless it is a program they want. If Mizzou thinks this is the right move, good for them. I disagree, I think the Big 12 will eventually fold in the next few years and the Big 10 doesn't really want them, but that is just my opinion.

  Umm... conference expansion is not really about sports. Research dollars are the number 1 factor.

  The Big 12 remains a ticking time bomb. It may have survived this round, but soon enough somebody will get mad about the Longhorn and start looking for a new home. Once they leave, you'll see the dominoes in other conferences begin to fall all over again

  LOL. There is only one conference that even pretends like this is true (B1G), and it's even pretty low on their priority list.

  Because "Texas apparently agreed to a more equitable revenue sharing arrangement" means that all teams are now on the same revenue level as Texas. Based on the wording, they're getting a little bit more, but not equal.

  Yeah, I haven't found anything that says Texas is willing to split everything evenly.

  Not sure what changed or whether the details in this article represent the previous or the current structure, but:
  

  The Big 12 splits revenue from its Fox Sports contract evenly, but only half of the money from its top-tier deal with ABC/ESPN goes into equal shares. The rest is weighted toward the programs that play on the network more frequently.

  Okay, well, according to this, Texas hasn't agreed to anything yet. They're willing to consider equal revenue sharing from the TV contracts, excluding the Longhorn Network (doesn't sound like they want to share any of that).

  ^^That's how I understood it, which is why I said they were sharing equally but keeping LHN all to themselves.
  
  Honest questions: If Iowa State plays @ Texas in football (or any sport for that matter), and it's on LHN, how can Texas NOT give ISU a portion of revenue? If they choose not to share revenue of LHN, can the other schools refuse to appear on LHN?
  
  I just have a feeling that LHN will eventually fold. Do ND opponents get a small share of revenue when they play @ ND?

  Interesting question. I wonder if the other Big XII schools had to originally agree to anything or if it might be covered in the Big XII's ESPN contract...like a clause or something that says ESPN can put your school on any of their networks.
