lhslep134I'm pretty sure the offensive line was atrocious today and that's why we couldn't move the ball. It's not like we were able to run, we couldn't get any push. MSU won the battle in the trenches and it was the reason we lost. Hard to fault Miller when he doesn't have time to even scan his WRs because he's more concerned about the 2 defenders in the backfield already.

Very true. I noticed that the snap count was very predictable as well. Michigan States front was getting a better jump off the ball than the offensive line.lhslep134;918915 wrote:I'm pretty sure the offensive line was atrocious today and that's why we couldn't move the ball. Do either of you realize that this coaching staff simply didn't adjust for (1) MSU stacking the line and (2) running run blitzes on first down and (3) other blitzes after OSU was in 2nd and 3rd and long?
Everyone in America knew MSU was going to do these things, but OSU simply ignored it and continued to run predictable plays with predictable snap counts, allowing the defense to simply jam the running lanes and jump the counts.
And then they made no adjustments when it continued.
This was all about lack of coaching and preparation. Throw in an inexperienced QB who was left there to be a sitting duck, and you have the OSU offense today.
Gene Smith should have fired the lot of them at halftime, it was such a bad job of game preparation.
No OL in the world can be success against what MSU did today without some help from coaches by calling plays that force them to take off the pressure. That never happened.
I will be applauding when Fickell and the rest of this coaching staff is summarily fired -- and if there are too many more games like this one, it will probably happen before the end of the season. -

Why are you SYH? Yes I understand that. Are you pointing out the obvious or what?Writerbuckeye;918938 wrote:SMH

Because you agreed this was basically a problem with the OL instead of the scheme. OSU's OL didn't particularly play well, but most of that was because the play calling put them in a horrid position.thedynasty1998;918959 wrote:Why are you SYH? Yes I understand that. I pointed out the obvious because you two were blaming the OL and not the ridiculously bad coaching that helped make the OL look so bad. -
Terry_TateThat was some of the worst offensive play calling and planning I've ever seen in my life. Combine that with young inexperienced wrs and qb and you have what happened today. Can't wait to have a better offensive coordinator.

I never imagined an OSU team being coached so poorly. I was never a huge fan of Tressel, but he's now showing how great of a coach he truly was. He covered up so many deficiencies on his own staff.Writerbuckeye;918971 wrote:Because you agreed this was basically a problem with the OL instead of the scheme. Tressel was a control freak who had to have his "yes" men around him. We all knew that and accepted it because of the results. Of course, that meant when he was gone, we were left with a staff of folks who (aside from Heacock) mostly couldn't find their butts with both hands.thedynasty1998;919000 wrote:I never imagined an OSU team being coached so poorly. That showed today.
Bollman is arguably the worst play caller in college football. We apparently don't have a QB coach, but a film coordinator masquerading as one.
I can say that in more than 40 years of watching OSU football, I've never seen an offense as pathetic and ill-prepared as that one was today. Everyone in America knew what MSU would do coming into this game -- everyone, apparently, except Fickell and Bollman (this assumes Fickell even talks to Bollman about the offense).
OSU ran into that stacked front play after play, didn't change the snap count so MSU could time and jump the count easily, and never ran plays to take the pressure off. Instead, they ran slow developing pass plays on downs when the D knew it was a pass. The result was 9 sacks and a ton more pressures.
It really was, as the announcers said, "totally pathetic" of an offense. It was embarrassing.
I haven't watched it yet (I just can't bring myself to do so) but I guess the press conference after the game is just one more chapter in this horror story. Fickell does not distinguish himself at all, and players openly questioned why the staff wasn't making adjustments to force MSU out of its stunts and blitzing. -

thedynasty1998Siciliano should be fired tonight. Why waste state tax payer money writing him another check?

He got that job because he was a Youngstown guy. He hasn't impressed me at all since he has taken over. TP had poor mechanics even in to last season. Just think how good TP might have been if he didn't have Bollman and Siciliano as his key mentors.
I wouldnt trust them to coach 3rd and 4th graders -

Give me Meyer or Jon Gruden. If you don't get them, go get Dantonio -

You don't need to imaginative to win titles. See 2002.
He has won some games at Mich. St. which is never easy. Dude is a pretty good recruiter too -
MulvaMike Gundy. We need a man running this team.

Well he does also have one of the best offenses in the country right now tooMulva;919148 wrote:Mike Gundy. We need a man running this team. -

The play calling wasn't smart. I don't care about how creative it was. The int in the end zone was a horrible play call. You go up 10 and the games over. Yet he threw it and allowed OSU to stayin it.jordo212000;919146 wrote:You don't need to imaginative to win titles. See 2002.

With that said, I do think he's a good coach. But I would like to think OSU could do better. -
Mulva
Yeah. I wasn't being completely serious, but he's a guy I would at least consider. He played at Oklahoma State though, so I'm not sure he'd even be interested in a move.LJ;919151 wrote:Well he does also have one of the best offenses in the country right now too
Off the top of my head, my top few choices would be Chris Petersen, Gary Patterson, Bob Stoops, or possibly Meyer (great coach but I'm not sure I trust him to stick around for the long haul).
The 2nd tier of guys I'd consider who are less proven would be Gundy, Steve Sarkisian, or (the only 2 coordinators I'd consider) would be Chryst or Kirby Smart. I think Smart is going to get the Georgia job if Richt is let go at the end of the year though.
I'm still not entirely ready to give up on the notion of Fickell. I hate that he plays no role whatsoever with the offense and he's looked overwhelmed so far, but he's a young guy, he obviously knows the game, and he's a great recruiter. I'd like to see him in a situation where he had time to build his own staff around him and where the odds weren't stacked entirely against him succeeding, but that's obviously not a possibility.
Edit: I just read through the whole topic for the first time, so I wanted to add that I have no interest at all in Pelini (I don't get what he's done that proves him as even a consideration) or Gruden (due to no college experience). I don't think Gruden would be interested anyway. When he gets back into coaching it's going to be the NFL in my opinion. -

Heavens no. We wouldnt to bring back the guy who developed our defense into one of the school's best ever defenses and was very instrumental in our national championship victory. We don't want that -
krambman
I'm with you (except that no state funds actually go to pay for the football team, since the athletic department at OSU is self-sufficient). Sad knowing that Joe Daniels is still on the football staff but isn't the QB coach anymore because of cancer. Guy coached Dan Marino and Troy Smith in college. He's an all-time great at coaching QB's and he was replaced by this bum.thedynasty1998;919081 wrote:Siciliano should be fired tonight. Why waste state tax payer money writing him another check? -

BigAppleBuckeyeWhy does't Ohio State EVER run a slant? It's always a 5-step drop with either a grandpa QB or a QB with happy feet, waiting for sub-par receivers to make their breaks. Just run a slant once in a while, it f-cking works! I would discuss the next step -- the mystical, magical screen pass -- but let's start here. Our coaching is putrid, we have won in the past despite our offensive gameplanning, and that BS just won't fly anymore.

Every Buckeye fan has known he sucks pretty much since he arrived in Columbus. Unfortunately those in power have never seemed to mind too much. For me, it's less about the play calling, because when we've had athlete's we've had good creative offenses, but it's more about the annual underachievement of the offensive line. The o-line is the position he coaches, and they consistently under perform more than any other position for the Buckeyes.
