Let The Ohio State Head Coaching Search Begin

Yes, that's right. I couldn't remember how many o's there were in "doooooooooooooooosh".wkfan;917169 wrote:Don't know him as a person, but as a coaching personality, he is a narcistic doooooooooooooooosh.
Here's another question for you. Let's say OSU goes after some of the names you mentioned and they are turned down. How much damage does that do to the program for whoever takes over? There was a lot of publicity about Notre Dame when they didn't get their top couple choices. Now, ND's program was probably worse off at the time they were hiring than OSU is now (depending on how you view the NCAA thing hanging over their head or the ultimate outcome), but it was at least a question to ponder about how really the tradition didn't mean as much to candidates anymore.
So again, would you guys rather OSU shoot for the stars at the risk of looking kind of foolish (if they were to be turned down several times) or go with a lesser known name that allows them to sell him as their top pick? -

I don't think the publicity really hurt them. Do you think there was a recruit who was going to Notre Dame but decided not to because the media was making fun of them?enigmaax;917203 wrote:There was a lot of publicity about Notre Dame when they didn't get their top couple choices. -

To answer your other question, I would hope that the Ohio State officials (although I'm nor sure Gene Smith has the ability) would do their due diligence in private before talking about who they are targeting. That way, none of the names on my list, or any of the others being bandied about would be out in the public eye.
I'm sure that Stoops is a real stretch, as migh be Gruden and, to a lesser extent, Pelini. The others are certainly within the rhelm of possibility. That being said, Tressel wasn't my first pick either, and that didn't turn out too badly..although it certainly did end badly and I'm not sure it is over yet.
Here's hoping that Gene Smith gets swept out as well. Him still being the AD, IMO, is more damaging that a swing and a miss on a new big name HC. -

I agree with your last comment. Smith should go. I'm still amazed that he hasn't received more backlash regarding our current situation.wkfan;917220 wrote:Lots of O's in doooooooooooooooooooosh

I don't know that anyone specifically changed their minds at that time, but I don't know that we'd ever know who or how many may have subscribed to the negative aura of the program. Let's say you're a soph or junior right now who is going to be recruited by all the big name midwest schools in the next couple years. All you hear on TV is about OSU is how the mighty have fallen - the violations are one thing, but the fact that now even coaches are shying away. Do you even consider them if you might have otherwise been on the fence?FatHobbit;917214 wrote:I don't think the publicity really hurt them. Almost every program that has an opening has someone turn them down...either in reality or in the press. Here's hoping that a kid who might be on the fence chooses Ohio State because of the coach that is chosen rather than who turned them down. I'm not sure of the decision making process of a kid who does otherwise.enigmaax;917243 wrote:All you hear on TV is about OSU is how the mighty have fallen - the violations are one thing, but the fact that now even coaches are shying away. Based on? He has lost 4 games a year as Head Coach, and I think Nebraska is overrated this year, as their defense has been pretty bad against less than stellar competition.j_crazy;917120 wrote:Bo pelini is the correct choice. -

Indeed. He's one .500 season from being Frank Solich.se-alum;917306 wrote:Based on? He has lost 4 games a year as Head Coach, and I think Nebraska is overrated this year, as their defense has been pretty bad against less than stellar competition.
Hey, what about Frank Solich? He's already in Ohio. If he's drunk, at least he wouldn't have to drive far. -

And when you can rattle off only two...then its as I said...not very common. Many more have failed. Its a completely different job besides the x and o's.j_crazy;917149 wrote:Carroll and Sherman made the transition from NFL to NCAA look pretty easy. -

Every head coach is a narcist in some shape or form. They all have egos. I am not a HUGE fan of Meyer. But you cannot knock his success. Lets be honest, its about winning and thats all most OSU fans want. And Meyer knows how to win.wkfan;917169 wrote:Meyer is a narcisstic doooooooooooooooooosh and I do not wany any coach at Ohio State to think that they are bigger than the tradition and the program. See how RichRod worked for UM?

I guess I'm a littel different...I want Ohio State to win...and win with class.centralbucksfan;917322 wrote:Every head coach is a narcist in some shape or form. They all have egos. Meyer does not appear to possess both of those qualities. -

Maybe I am in the minority but I am a Smith supporter. The NCAA has cleared OSU athletics. Tressel brought on what happened to him and the football team. No one else is to blame. SMith has a HUGE athletic department to oversee. He depends on the head coaches to do their jobs and adhere to the rules. I am sure he has taken some heat. But if things were as many claim, the board of trustees would have had his head by now easily.Automatik;917236 wrote:I agree with your last comment. Smith should go. I still believe that Smith is dirty in the whole affair. He knew....centralbucksfan;917327 wrote:Maybe I am in the minority but I am a Smith supporter. The NCAA has cleared OSU athletics. Do you want a list of guys who were successful in the NFL and failed at the college level, vice versa, or both?dat dude;917348 wrote:Who have failed? Saban, Callahan, ...? -
dat dudeBoth, I guess. I'm just curious.

enigmaaxNick Saban, Bobby Petrino, Steve Spurrier, Dennis Erickson, Mike Riley, Rich Brooks, Butch Davis, Lane Kiffin, June Jones - all terrible NFL coaches (Brooks probably wasn't a good college coach either, I guess)
Al Groh, Charlie Weis, Ron Zook - while not NFL head coaches (Groh was for one year) were decent to great NFL assistants who tanked as college coaches
Open for debate - Dave Wannstedt (losing NFL record, some bad NCAA losses but decent overall record), Chan Gailey (so-so at both), Bobby Ross (won an NCAA title and went to the Super Bowl, but mediocre overall - probably a better college coach before his last miserable run at Army), Pete Carroll (mediocre NFL record), Mike Sherman (mediocre NCAA record), Bill Callahan (went to a Super Bowl, but had a losing NFL record - terrible-by-Nebraska standards in college), Jim Caldwell (terrible NCAA record, started pretty well with a pretty good team in the NFL but could be exposed soon)
Jimmy Johnson won it all at both levels and was pretty good overall at both
Barry Switzer won it all at both levels (but kind of wasted a dynasty in Dallas)
Tom Coughlin has won a Super Bowl and was moderately successful at BC (nothing spectacular) -
thedynasty1998Smith should be given some credit or the coaches he's hired. Look at Matta. I believe the wrestling coach has elevated the program. Smith may not be perfect, but I have a lot of confidence in him to make a great hire, whether it's a high profile coach or not.
-
WriterbuckeyeSmith did not hire Matta. Geiger did.
If there was any doubt left that Fickell is in over his head, this first half should clinch it for you. Absolutely pathetic. -
gerb131What a moron. Take the ball on the coin toss. Fire him on the spot.
-
Fly4FunThis is honestly just hard to watch. I can't turn it off as I love buckeye football. But this is just a painful season.

ksig489Wow...no blame on the awful QB play now that Miller is the QB? Thats funny. No coach in America could win with that kid under center. I've seen RBs in the wildcat who are better QBs.

Then design a new scheme. The spread is putting too much pressure on him. Get back to establishing the run and find a few plays the simplify things for Miller.ksig489;918882 wrote:Wow...no blame on the awful QB play now that Miller is the QB? Thats funny. Hamler Bulldogsmaybe Miller just isn't very bright,as far as the coaching situation,if the offense continues to suck,a change needs to happen.alot of people don't like Meyer but his records speak for themselves, and we also need to think about recruiting,Meyer would have recruits standing at the door of the Shoe.
