Matt Painter to Mizzou??

  • thavoice
My sources are telling me that UD is going after Painter now.

(but those sources are just tiny voices in my head)

My sources(very reliable) are telling me Phil Jackson will be leaving LA to take the Mizzou job. I 100% believe it.

INDIANAPOLIS -- Purdue's sales pitch to Matt Painter was good enough.

After talking with Missouri about its coaching vacancy, Painter decided to stay at his alma mater Wednesday and has agreed to an eight-year contract through the 2018-19 season.

Oden said, in a magazine as a freshman in HS "Its NBA of IU for me. The only thing that would change that is the age limit or coaching changes."

Hummel grew up in West Lafayette. Johnson grew up as a Hoosier fan, has stated as much. McRoberts grew up a Hoosier fan, and had Hoosier bed sheets. But wanted the national recognition of Duke. Domonic James and Luke Harangoday both begged to play for the Hoosiers, but Mike Davis said they werent good enough.

Purdue is the second most followed school on a regular basis. But Butler is in Indianapolis. In terms of who people talk about, on the whole, it is Indiana, Mid-Major thats hot, Purdue, Notre Dame. Purdue is simply not a big storyline in the Hoosier state. The IndyStars front cover when Purdue blasted Ohio State? It was previewing the upcoming Hoosier game and talking about the Butler victory. The Purdue games article wasnt till page 3.

I am kind of sick of arguing this subject, because I am in Indiana every week. All season it was Indiana by a long shot. Then Butler, the Notre Dame and Purdue about the same. I drove through West Lafayette 4 times over the course of the season. 3 times the main topic was about Indiana. The other time was a tourney preview in which they spent equal time on Butler and Purdue.

LOL..believe me you, I followed Oden, Conley, etc, etc. You didn' get my point about my statement to VOICE. It was towards his comment about "everyone" grows up wanting to go to IU. My point was about the players who DID NOT go there, went elsewhere to places like PURDUE and OSU. I am not argueing that IU isn't king in Indiana. They are. My point is that Purdue is not as "insignificant" as some are making them out to be. Thats a fact and not even arguable IMO. Try keep up a little bit will you. ;)

Painter is staying at "insignificant" Purdue. ;)

As stated by the post 11 minutes before yours. LOL

And once again the St. Louis Post-Dispatch gets it wrong. It's been a long time since that paper had good sports journalists.

And this is officially the most attention Matt Painter will ever get. He just peaked.
  • Big Gain
Painter is no longer the 7th highest paid coach in the Big Ten. His only reason for wasting Missouri's time

He's a two time winner of the big ten coach of the year. They finished 2nd in the big ten this year, 1st last year, 2nd the year before and 2nd the year before. That's pretty good. And I'm not sure why everyone is acting like Purdue is so bad. (at least at basketball) They have the 20th most wins in NCAA history. http://fs.ncaa.org/Docs/stats/m_basketball_RB/2011/D1.pdf

Agree. I happen to think Painter is a pretty damn good coach myself.

    But can he recruit?

Hummel, All American in Johnson, and E. Moore were all pretty damn good recruits. I haven't looked to see what he has coming in. But when he took over, Purdue program was struggling. First year was tough, since then he has had 5 straight 20 wins seasons(past 4, 25+ wins) as well as in NCAA those 5yrs with two sweet 16. This losing arguably their best all around player in Hummell the past two seasons. Not saying he is all this and that...but he is only 40, been a head coach for only 7yrs and has been pretty damn successful overall.

Not sure anyone is saying they are bad. Just they don't get he respect they deserve in the state of Indiana...which is somehow still being debated. In fact they are very good and deserve MORE recognition...they just don't and won't ever get it.

On great class, followed by 5 pretty bad ones and 2013 he has a solid class lined up...at he moment, but did miss on Colin Hartman and Dee Davis who he recruited pretty hard. But then landed possible five star Basil Smotherman.

Yeah...I dont see anyone saying they are bad. I know Laley and I are not.

I am just saying that Purdue has always been, and will always be, the red headed step child of basketball in indiana. Read an article in a paper the other day that stated they are from Terra Haute! Just shows how little people care about them! They will always be known as that one college in indiana. What school? Oh really, didnt know they were located in indiana!

Most of that recruiting class came because of Sampson's issues at IU...outside of that (great) class, what's he had?

Yeah. No one is saying Matt is bad. We're just saying that he's the Natalee Holloway of coaches. Great person, but rarely noticed.

In a lot of ways, Purdue is very similar to the perception of N.C. State in the state of North Carolina, except without a national championship post the 1939 tournament format. N.C. State has won two NCAA tournament titles (1974 and 1983) while Purdue won a national championship based off of season rankings in 1932. The Boilermakers were also the 1969 NCAA runner-up. Both Purdue and N.C. State have exceptional basketball histories, with great records of winning -- the Boilers own the most Big Ten conference championships of all-time with 22; the Wolfpack trail Duke and UNC for the third most ACC championships of all-time with 10 -- and each having produced some of the game's most famed figures. Purdue with John Wooden, Ward Lambert, Gene Keady, Rick Mount, Joe Barry Carroll and Glenn Robinson. N.C. State with Everett Case, Press Maravich, Jim Valvano, Vinny Del Negro and David Thompson.

But, no matter the heaps of success the two schools have enjoyed, both are unfortunately -- and tragically -- largely forgotten. That's what happens when you play in the direct shadows of schools like Indiana, Duke and North Carolina. They are basketball royalty in their respective states and are always going to be No. 1.

The St Louis Post and Kansas City Star have the same problem. They both think Mizzou and Kansas are bigger programs then they really are. The SLP pretty much thought it would be a done deal for Painter to leave Purdue for the big time job of Mizzou. This is the same way the Kansas City Star reported it was close to a done deal that Harbaugh would leave Stanford for the Kansas football job.
