Matt Painter to Mizzou??
-
Laley23No link, but rumors running rampant that its a done deal. Sites including GBI (Purdue Premium Rivals Board).
AD for Mizzou was AD when Painter was at S. Illinois. Guess they threw 2 million for 7 years at him. -
dazedconfused"mr. stevens, purdue athletic director morgan burke here. we'd like a word with you when you have the time."
-
cbus4lifeI think he's staying, but still, if i was a Purdue fan, i would probably be a bit nervous, if only because Burke is known as kinda a cheap ass.

If he lets Painter leave, he probably won't be in a position to make that call, they need to fire him. -
Manhattan BuckeyeWould be a lateral move, at best. Only reason to do it is for money. Purdue has more prestige, a better (or A, for that matter) conference on steady ground and better history, plus Painter is an alum. Mizzou might be the most overrated college basketball program around, they are Clemson football sans the national championship 3 decades ago that gets Clemson fans thinking they are a top program.
-
cbus4lifeHmmm, folks at GBI are very nervous, almost making it sound like a done deal. They seem to be saying that Painter isn't just "a candidate" for the job, he is the only candidate, so do the math.
Still, just can't see it happening... -
brutus161Hell, let Painter go, and go after Brad Stevens.
-
jordo212000I don't know much about Stevens, but I think the only job he would leave for is Indiana
-
Azubuike24The reason Purdue wouldn't keep Painter is money. They aren't going to all of the sudden be able to get Brad Stevens. Heck, he makes more at Butler than Purdue would pay him...

thavoiceWay back when Gene Keady always said that Purdue never has, and never will, get the kind of respect and attention because of IU. He said he wanted to have the name Indiana somehow in the name of the school so they could get some just due and respect. Maybe Painter feels that this is as good as they can get...and they still dont really get the respect they deserve. Purdue could be 25 and 0 and IU be .500 and they would still have more interest around the state than the Boilers.
or he is just doing it for the $$$$$$$$$$$....to stay with a raise or bolt for more cash. -
centralbucksfanI'd be shocked of Painter left for Mizzou. Call it a lateral move if you choose...but its a step down IMO. Unless they throw ridiculous money at him that he can't refuse..I say he isn't going anywhere. Never say never...and I don't know the logistics behind this, family, where he is from, etc, etc. So who knows.

And Keady said this when Knight was there, and IU was the king. IU will always have that name behind them, as well as better tradition. But right now, as it has been for a number of years, Purdue program is in much better shape. -

I 100% agree. -
gorocks99Purdue apparently pays Painter, and especially his assistants, shit money and isn't willing to up the ante. From what I hear, it pisses Painter off and I wouldn't be surprised if this goes down. Here's a verbatim post from another board:
My buddy in Kansas City who tipped me off to this last week says his Mizzou insider friends believe this "is going to happen." He says Painter expressed interest in the Mizzou gig before it became open. Heard Mizzou was willing to go $2 mil to keep Anderson and had his reps call Mizzou and tell them if Anderson goes anyway, 'then he's interested.' Anderson left, and Mizzou told him they'd go $2+ million/year and Painter was all ears.
He says the Mizzou people say Painter is telling them he likes Purdue, but is unhappy that he and especially his assistants are underpaid, he has a smaller staff than most and PU isn't willing to let him add people, isn't thrilled with his AD, loves the Mizzou Arena/practice facility, and likes the St. Louis area.
I'm dumbfounded, but after checking in with my friend (and he's connected to the KC sports scene), I think this could actually go down. -

Well, if true..then that could be a difference maker. And Purdue would be stupid not to ante up if his pay is that "poor". I personally think he is a hell of a coach and a great fit for Purdue. -

he gets 1.4 at purdue if anyone was wondering.

It is is much better shape right now, that is for sure, but no one other their own university gives a damn about Purdue. No one notices them, no one cares about them and they are looked upon as the red headed step child of hoops compared to IU. I am talking about perception, not necessarily reality. Maybe he feels like if he goes to Missouri and builds them up then he could feel like his school gets the respect of even its own state. Not so much in Indiana. IU is king, even if they struggle like right now but will soon rise, and heck a general poll of people would rate Butler as better....because they just don not pay attention to Purdue -
Azubuike24Purdue will not pay coaches top dollar. They won't even match a decent offer from Missouri. The actual job and loyalty to the school isn't relevant. If they were relevant, a Purdue alum and guy who said this was his dream job wouldn't even be considering it. I'd guess he's at Missouri by the end of the week.
Onto who Purdue could get, and given Brad Stevens' notoriety and stock right now, why on earth do people think Purdue could then turn around and pay him MORE to leave Butler than they would have paid Painter to stay in the first place? This could leave Purdue in a BAD position if Painter leaves.
Stay tuned. -

Yet, IU is still 99% of what Indiana talks about. When Jeremy Hollowell committed the other day, the news, radio, frontpage of Indystar etc was about 7 articles about Hollowell chooses Hoosiers. Butler was about to play in the NCAA Tourney and Purdue had just lost.
Not to mention, Indiana has the most recent run in the tourney...of course, thats easy since Purdue doesnt have on ever.
Purdue, right now isnt that great. Painter cant get the recruits. Fans are anxious and getting tired of his lack of anything. He has 1 class that he has hung his hat on for the time hes been there...he didnt win shit with them, and he has struggled mightily on the recruiting trail since. -
Manhattan BuckeyeSome of you are really selling Purdue short, all-time they are easily a top 20 program. They've won more Big 10 championships than any other team and have a winning record over Indiana. So Indiana is more popular, big deal. Kentucky is a lot more popular than L'ville but that didn't stop L'ville from winning two championships in the 80's and usually having good teams.
What does Missouri have? No final four appearances, strong border rivals on either side (next to the major metropolitan areas), conference of unknown future, and an realistic fanbase due to Noman Stewart's longevity. -

Purdue and Missouri are pretty similar in my mind. Both are above average programs that do not do much on a national scale. They both have rivals (purdue and indiana, missouri and kansas) that are much more popular and successful. Both are stepping stone coaching positions. I'm sure there are more comparisons. -
sportswizuhrdBob Valvano brought up a good point today on "The Experts" on ESPN. He said that if Lou Carneseca(sp?) or Rollie V weren't coaching at SJU or Villanova back in the day, they would be coaching at a HS because they had love of the game, but nowadays coaches are in it for the $$ and to further their career and wouldnt take a HS job but instead a job in Business or something along those lines.

ou1980I work and live in West Lafayette, although I am originally from Ohio (see username)
I would be shocked, absolutely positively shocked if Painter left for Mizzou, and I promise that the rest of this small community would be as well...NOBODY SAW THIS COMING
For starters, Painter made mention throughout his career that this is his last stop, after playing, assist coach, coaching at Purdue...although things can change. Morgan Burke and the heads at Purdue are complete fools when it comes to athletics and sports media, anyone who listens to Cowherd on ESPN knows what I am talking about...That place is an absolute joke. So if its about the $$$$ I would not blame him 100% for leaving...He deserves better. -
ou1980lol... Lafayettes newpaper Journal and Courier does not have ONE mention of any of this....
Why???
Because in this small town, as big as Purdue is, if you knock that school in any way, you are pretty much thrown on a blacklist with the school. No joke folks...
