Purdue, always trying to save face...what a dog and pony show!

LOL VCU, George Mason, etc, etc. Thats the norm, and has nothing to do with anything but it being a top media story. It has NOTHING to do with Purdue being an afterthought, which they clearly are not IMO.
All grow up as IU fans? I guess that excludes guys like Oden, Conley, Thomas and current Big Ten and 1st team All American from Purdue, JaJaun Johnson as well as Robbie Hummel. If I wanted to make an effort, I could probably reel off many other names who have not gone to IU, but other "afterthought" schools. ;)

You must not have followed Oden and Conley until they committed to the Buckeyes. Both were Indiana Hoosier fans. They went to games (paid tickets) when they were growing up. Oden said, in a magazine as a freshman in HS "Its NBA of IU for me. The only thing that would change that is the age limit or coaching changes."

Hummel grew up in West Lafayette. Johnson grew up as a Hoosier fan, has stated as much. McRoberts grew up a Hoosier fan, and had Hoosier bed sheets. But wanted the national recognition of Duke. Domonic James and Luke Harangoday both begged to play for the Hoosiers, but Mike Davis said they werent good enough.

Purdue is the second most followed school on a regular basis. But Butler is in Indianapolis. In terms of who people talk about, on the whole, it is Indiana, Mid-Major thats hot, Purdue, Notre Dame. Purdue is simply not a big storyline in the Hoosier state. The IndyStars front cover when Purdue blasted Ohio State? It was previewing the upcoming Hoosier game and talking about the Butler victory. The Purdue games article wasnt till page 3.

I am kind of sick of arguing this subject, because I am in Indiana every week. All season it was Indiana by a long shot. Then Butler, the Notre Dame and Purdue about the same. I drove through West Lafayette 4 times over the course of the season. 3 times the main topic was about Indiana. The other time was a tourney preview in which they spent equal time on Butler and Purdue.

Give me the national success Purdue has had in comparison to IU and even Butler now (heck Indiana State in 79!!! or even Valpo in the late 90s!). Go....

And yes, we are serious. I have lived in Indiana for nearly 15 years of my life. I listen to the sports radio in Indy, Fort Wayne, and other areas...but they are mostly syndicated. All Indiana, then Butler/Valpo/Indiana State/IUPUI then Purdue. The whole state knows that no one but Alums give a shit about the schools basketball program, so they arent going to talk about it or give it its due justice. Its kind of sad actually, as they are very good and have a great history within the Big Ten. But nationally, they are indeed an afterthought.

I was watching the CBS local affiliate in Indy last weekend. They led off with Crean and his off-season work-out program. Then Zeller at the McD AA game. Then moved on the Butler. Then with the Colts and the NFL Lockout. Finally, about a 10 second blurb about Purdue maybe losing their coach, as Mizzou has called on Painter.

Seriously guys, go live in Indiana for 5-10 years and you will realize that the state doesnt care, follow, or get behind the team at all. Most player grow up Indiana fans, though that doesnt mean they will choose IU, so that is a terrible way to look at it.

BTW, just received a not on Stevens contract with Butler. No way Purdue would pay this:

----- Stevens contract reads as follows: 10 yrs $748k/yr...3% increase/yr + incentives for games won, sweet 16, elite 8, final 4, etc...worth well over $1 mil per year after incentives. His only out clause- bigger school has to buy out entire 10 yr contract...over $6 million today based on his base salary alone PLUS the $2 plus per year in future earnings it would take to woo him away-----

Mizery is giving Painter a Wednesday @ noon deadline

They are getting abused by Painter to get more money from PU.

I dunno. Painter may decline, but he's not going to get a huge raise at Purdue...

Con_Alma wrote:The Butler Way is how Coach Hinkle did things...."team above all else". He defined The Butler Way. It stems from the old school core values coaching philosophy that was rooted in humility and serving the team.

Humility - know who we are, strengths and weaknesses
Passion - do not be lukewarm, commit to excellence
Unity - do not divide our house, team first
Servanthood - make teammates better, lead by giving
Thankfulness - learn from every circumstance

The interesting thing is that if you watch Coach Stevens and how he coaches you get a sense that his style and personality truly reflect this. There's something wholesome and good about it. A taste of yesteryear that doesn't include the "look at me" garbage that took over so much of sports. Maybe, just maybe it will catch on and be a trend. One can only hope.
I wasn't knocking "The Butler Way" in any way when I made that remark. I was just poking fun at how things like that or "The Carolina Way" are always thrown around. Anyway, thanks for listing that information about Coach Hinkle and his philosophy. Very interesting and cool stuff.

Duke has its own set of team-driven principals collectively known as "The Fist" in which Coach K expects everyone in the program to subscribe in order to achieve ultimate success. He believes that there are five fundamental qualities that make every team great -- communication, trust, collective responsibility, caring and pride -- and that, while each are individually important, it is only when all five qualities are bought into and lived out together as a FIST that a team can find its true potential.

I'm sure the "Duke sucks" crowd will just dismiss the FIST as homoerotic behavior between Caucasians, so enter that joke here. Whatever.

Correct. Though it was a little tongue in cheek. But thats the only corner of the state that is more purdue than IU based on the amount of alms and he fact they think they are Chicago :)

Lol...Now members are talking about leaving because of this email...per Purdues student newspaper article interviewing members...

reclegend....I didn't think you were knocking them. No worries, ...just thought I'd lay out what the Butler Way was since it was brought up.

Some Missouri writers are tweeting that it's a done deal...obviously not official, but all word from Mizzou is that he's going to accept the job.

This leaves Purdue in a sticky situation too. I wonder if there is going to be a stigma there that whoever takes that job won't get the attention/respect and/or salary potential they could elsewhere.

Does Cuonzo Martin, Purdue alum, now back out at Tennessee and go back home? Wouldn't it be weird if Missouri State coach Cuonzo Martin left the state to go to Tennessee, the big in-state school (Missouri) steals his alma mater's coach, and he then gets a "dream job" at Purdue a week later? Crazy.

I bet Robbie Hummel is ecstatic.

Purdue has more prestige, a better (or A, for that matter) conference on steady ground and better history, plus Painter is an alum. Mizzou might be the most overrated college basketball program around, they are Clemson football sans the national championship 3 decades ago that gets Clemson fans thinking they are a top program.

Nobody in Clemson thinks we are an elite program. I hate this misnomer. We just think we should win an ACC title once every few years considering we have won more than anyone else in the history of the conference.

Source tells St Louis newspaper Painter accepts Mizzou job!!

Just keep in mind that the Post-Dispatch was reporting last week that Anderson was getting a raise from Mizzou and was staying put. They tend to report from the heart sometimes instead of the head.

Based on what I've read, Painter leaving Purdue would say more about Purdue than anywhere he goes. I still think Missouri is an average school at best and it's a damn shame that Purdue doesn't recognize a good coach when they see one.
  • Laley23
Lots of Indy writers are sting he is gone. The only two that say it isn't official that ive read thus far are Purduebackers. I've come to my own conclusion and put two and two together.

You obviously know the score. Even in the years when both team were good when I would travel to ft wayne, a good distance from Bloomington, stores would stock IU apparrel and have just a little bit of purdue stuff. Just they way it is....and why Gene Kaedy made comments such as he has that he wwished the school had the name indiana in it to give it some recognition.

twitter source (unreliable I admit) says he's staying
