We will never know what really went on.

So she is the one that replied back to every email ?

Maybe because they sit on OSU's server and nothing can ever be completely deleted without destroying the hard drive.
I totally Agree once something is in an email these days its there forever. For my job i cant tell you how many times we get lectured about what we can put in emails because in any court case they can pull the emails within like a day of searching and have the evidence they may need. We are told if its anything confidential or even posssibly a negitive to not put it in an email. Also all of our emails are monitored and they will give you warnings if you put something you shouldnt have in an email. Theres even a filter that blocks out certain things before their even delivered.

has the ncaa really ever accepted a self imposed sanction without adding a lil something

I'm sure if the NCAA feels it is a fair sanction relative to the violation they have. Not sure if that applies in this case.

No doubt they could easily find deleted emails if they searched for them on the server, but they wouldn't know to search for them in the first place if they were deleted.

Yes, quite often they have. Troy Smith comes to mind. But its not often that schools are so quick in self reporting and handing down their own self imposed sanctions. OSU hired and paid a consultant to determine the sanctions based on past precedence. We'll see how good they were in determing this self imposed sanction.

Good point. People seem to think because we heard about this two days ago that the NCAA and compliances offices just found out too. This investigation has been ongoing for months, and I would like to believe that this suspension came from some logical analysis of the situation.

Every thing you have written on your computer can be recovered regardless of you deleting it.You would have to re-write over the information about 10 times and that may not even take care of it.There are programs that you can buy that will re-write and shred your deleted files multiple times if you want to permanently get rid of them.

Again I understand this. What I am saying is that they stumbled across these emails and weren't looking for them. If he had deleted the emails(which somebody covering something up would normally do), they would have had to have some cause to search for them.

Karen and Password.....are their copies of those emails that he "replied" too? We don't know what went on and what is the truth. The only guy that knows exactly what happened is Jim Tressel himself.

Most companies do an audit of their server every month to see what employees have been doing and most major companies never delete information from their server. They audit deleted files all the time to make sure you are not sending company information to people that should not have it.

They should have copies of everything that was sent and received on every computer associated with the college, including students that use their wireless and wired internet on campus.
They could tell you what site he was viewing while he opened the emails and what site he went to after he read the emails.

Good for those companies, but that isn't what happened.

Yeah there are. They have been posted on here quite a few times, I'll try to find the link again.

sherm03;705716 wrote:The more I think about it...the more this seems like a very real possibility. I can see everything going down like this:
April Tressel gets the first email and sends it up to Smith. Smith says he'll look into it and sits on it thinking it's just some crazy whacko making them chase their tales. Two weeks later, the guy has even more detailed information. Tressel inquires about it with Smith, and finds that nothing has been done or is told that it's being taken care of. Fast forward to September, Tressel signs the paper saying that he has done his due diligence and reported all possible violations (because in his mind, sending the info to Smith would constitute that). December, the shit storm hits. Smith pulls him aside and confesses that he did not do anything with the emails, and tells Tressel not to mention them. January comes along, and they stumble upon the emails during a separate investigation. Now they have to do something with them. They begin their "two month investigation" where they basically figure out the best way to deal with these findings. Meanwhile, Yahoo forces their hand and makes them scramble to come to a decision. The choice is made to let Tressel take the fall, and get suspended for a few games so that the program as a whole (which would be punished if Smith was at fault) does not take the hit.

It would explain Tressel's half-assed excuse and swiss cheese filled reasoning. It would also explain why Tressel was cut off when he tried to answer the question about forwarding the email to anyone during the presser.

I have a feeling we're never going to know exactly what happened. But that scenario seems just about as plausible as any other at this point.

Sorry, I don't buy that at all. I realize most here love Coach Tressel and believe he is a great guy but I can't believe he is taking the "fall" for omissions made by Gene Smith or the Compliance Office. I don't care how much he loves the university or the program, he is not going to tarnish his reputation or legacy for anyone. Would you do it for your employer? Basically you theory went down as follows:

Gene Smith: Jim, can I talk to you for a second?
    JT: Sure Gene, what's up?
Smith: Man, I f'd up Remember those emails you sent me back in April? I never acted on them and now we have failed to report them to the NCAA
    JT: Golly gee willickers.
Smith: Look, uh, could you do me a favor? I think it would look better for the program if you just fess up to a mistake. We'll just say you were confused about who to report it to and whether you could report it all. What's more, we'll just say you were concerned about the players well being.
    JT: mmmm...
Smith: Look, we're going to have to suspend you for two games and fine you $250K. We're also going to have to go in front of the media and gave a statement where you throw yourself under the bus to cover my ass. Sound ok?

( I am now inserting the part that would be the true world discussion if Gene Smith asked JT to do these things)
JT: Gene, I am sorry to hear about your mistakes. Can you excuse me for a second while I contact my lawyer? I'll call you back in an hour or so.

    ( an hour later)
Gene Smith: (phone rings) Gene Smith speaking.
Mr. Cheatum: Hello Mr. Smith. This is Mr. Cheatum calling, I am Jim Tressel's attorney. He has advised me of the discussion the two of you had this morning. I just wanted to give you the heads up my client will not be participating in the press conference this evening. Furthermore, you can expect to receive some paperwork which will be served by the Franklin County Sheriff later this week. Good day sir.

Thought this little snippet was interesting since you wouldn't agree with what I said earlier. Still don't agree?
Another significant — and potentially more damning — issue: In a Feb. 8, 2011 interview, Tressel admitted it was “inevitable” that players named in the email had committed NCAA violations and would be ruled ineligible. In other words, Tressel knew the players were ineligible and played them anyway.

Be very careful what you say about Tressel because they are starting to think that it is all a conspiracy against OSU.

A planned event. Ohio State self imposes a 2 game suspension and a 250K fine, their due diligence. The NCAA then increases the suspension to 4 games and the fine to 500k so they look like hard asses.

OQB;705746 wrote:ok first off, you guys throwing Tressel under the buss are just pathetic....

Although we all know who OSU's next coach is going to be (Urban Meyer).....this is Tressel's team and program, and it is his until he wants to step down. The NCAA has more issues than we can even realize, and a lot of big names have been punished the past 5 years. I think they will give him a few more games suspension, and make him give back his Sugar Bowl bonus, which is probably close to the $250,000 he was already fined. The man has a lot more respect nationally than Carroll, Chizik, Saban etc...Heck why wasn't Mississippi St. punished for even setting up a pay to play option for Newton...that is worse in my eyes than what Tressel did.

This whole situation is ridiculous, and just solidifies why I do not like the NCAA.

We all know Urban Meyer is the next coach? I hope you meant that sarcastically. Even if he is the next coach, I don't think it is highly probable.

I have no allegiance to Ohio State or Tressel. I don't hate the program...but I don't particularly like them either. Bottom line, I am very bored waiting for any news to be said regarding this...so I'm just spit balling ideas.

If I were Vegas it would be even money that Urb is the next coach in Columbus. I would think 3 years from now but it could be sooner if this gets ugly.

Nobody is acting like this is a conspiracy theory. Some are just saying that there is more to the story, and maybe Tressel isn't as guilty as some are saying(intent may have been good just poor execution) or he is more or less taking the fall. All of these at least have plausibility to it.

You on the other hand are bringing up stuff about coaches being implicated in criminal cases and information that has no established fact behind it. While I can never rule anything out, your posts are more consistent with a conspiracy theory than any other posts.
