Should Jim Tressel Step Down?

You really don't think Ohio State holds itself to a higher standard than Auburn and Alabama?

LOL @ comparing the SEC schools' cheating to what Tressel did with this situation...you can't be that dumb, can you?

Tressel lied 5 times and played players he knew should have been ineligible.

At what point did he actually lie?

Also, wasn't it stated that the emails only mentioned two players? Or was it only 2 that are currently on the team?

Dude, you really don't understand do you?

That's my point, I'm not comparing them. This situation, at OSU, should be looked at singularly. Who gives a shit what goes on at LSU?

Sorry, maybe he withheld the truth 5 times, does that make you feel better? He was asked a couple times in December if he knew anything, he said no. He signed a form for the NCAA saying he had reported any violations he was aware of in September. He still didn't come forth about the emails in January, they were found when OSU was looking into another matter. He said he didn't know who to talk to. He said he was asked to keep it confidential, but the first email didn't say that and he replied 4 hours later.

Not sure on the second point you made, but Tressel did kind of say that it was players currently on the team, otherwise he wouldn't have said the stuff about not wanting to suspend them last year to "protect" them.

And I'm looking at it from the exact opposite...cheating goes on at every school, it happens. When you compare this to what some of these other schools are doing, it's nothing.

Nah, just don't think what Tress did was that bad...if it was, I'd say it was bad. speaking of kool aid, green beer day in athens..gotta go

This to me, is the most insightful part of all those emails:
June 1, 2010 at 7:33 AM from Jim Tressel:
....our rings arrive this week for the 2009 Big Ten . . . .any names from our last discussion?? I would like to hold some collateral if you know what I mean ..... jt
This puts away all those who say he didn't think about it, or didn't look into it, or didn't care. It also shows that he wanted some collateral, and for what reason is a great question.

    Who cares what Spielman thinks.

vball, why would you start a thread asking a yes/no question and not include a poll? Honestly now!

Ummm, apparently a lot of people since he is paid by a Columbus radio station to do a show and by ESPN to do college football games. That's not mentioning all the current and former players and alums that admire him.

97.1 the fan pays multiple people that not many like. I wouldn't use that as a source.

They wouldn't pay them if people didn't listen to them. People care what Spielman thinks, maybe not your or I, but many people do.

Doesn't mean people respect their opinions

Have you ever heard people speak about Spielman? I don't know if there are many men in Columbus more respected. I heard a Laurinaitis interview a week or so ago after the Cruise for Cancer and they asked why he and his family attend. He said something along the lines of, "Seeing how passionate Chris is about this cause, it's the least I can do for someone whom I admire and respect as much as Chris Spielman".

People respect Spielman for what he and his family have done for breast cancer. Please, don't confuse the two, as that would be an insult to he and his deceased wife.

no. he took the proverbial shit, he should be the one to stick around and smell it.

IF (and i think there is 0% chance that this happens, but...) the NCAA doesn't punish OSU and ONLY punishes Tressel, then yes, he should probably step down. But if and when the NCAA hits the PROGRAM with whatever punishment is coming, Tressel should be the one to lead them through it. Clean up for his own messes, so to speak.

I just hope any additional sanctions handed down by the NCAA have to do with Tressel solely, and not the program. Suspending him for a game or two more and an additional fine would not be as damning as reducing scholarship #s. I haven't heard anything regarding the latter, so I hope OSU would be safe from that.

I think that all depends on whether or not Tressel forwarded the emails to anyone. If he kept everything to himself like he says he did, then I don't see how the program can be punished.

I wasn't trying to be argumentative. It was a serious question. I've read so much shit about this story it makes my brain hurt.

I think the primary offense of Tress was not seeking legal council....as its been said many times. But if he would have...would have have been at risk to blow the top off of the case if players we outed earlier?

A lot of this is fishy to me. I too am starting to believe that he is taking the fall with hopes the OSU as a whole does not get punished.

Yeah its definitely not clear what is going on which is part of the problem. It just seems like there is more to the story than what Tressel and Smith are letting on. I found it kind of odd that Tressel opened his statements by quipping about bringing notes with him so that would keep him from talking in circles. He looked at his notes about 2 times, and spent the entire time talking in circles.
  • Automatik
I thought his statement was ok actually. I was expecting much worse.

Its just a shitty situation from top to bottom. The worst is that is stemmed from dumbass players selling their OWN PROPERTY, but yes..."rules is rules."

I thought they had a lecture, class, or something that outlined violations and what and what not to do. The pure stupidity of some amateur athletes these days enrages me!!
