All-Big Ten Teams Are Annouced

devil1197Craft should have been the DPOY imo.
POY normally goes to the team who won the conference, but I could see giving Sully the freshman honors and rewarding Johnson's strong career.
Matta gets nothing. -
centralbucksfanNot all too surprising. Although you woulda thought Purdue won the Big10...Johnson, Moore, Painter and Johnson as defensive player of the year. lol I personally think Matta deserves coach of the year. Also find it hard to believe that Sullinger wasn't a unanimous 1st team on media.
Overall, pretty solid picks though as far as the teams ended up. -
sleeperThis isn't a knock JaJuan, but how can the best player in the country not be the best player in his own conference? Sullinger and Matta snubbed.
Its okay though, OSU will get its championship. -
mallymal614In my opinion, John Beilein is the Coach of the Year in the Big Ten. Remember Michigan was suppose to be in a rebuilding year and now it looks like they will be dancing next week. I think people overate Robbie Hummel too much, which is why Painter got Coach of the Year. We keep on hearing about the job he did without Hummel. Hummel was the 3rd option before the injury. Moore and Johnson always been the guys that make the engine go. Yeah they struggled a bit when Hummel went down a year ago, but that takes some time to adjust. And they still ended up making the Sweet 16. Just my thoughts.

Johnson being a senior probably has a lot to do with it. -
mallymal614Jared Sullinger endorses Purdue's JaJuan Johnson as player of the year: Big Ten Insider
http://www.cleveland.com/osu/index.ssf/2011/03/jared_sullinger_endorses_purdu.htmlCOLUMBUS, Ohio -- After Ohio State demolished Wisconsin on Sunday, 93-65, to win the outright Big Ten by two games over Purdue, with Jared Sullinger scoring 22 points and grabbing eight rebounds, I asked the OSU freshman who the Big Ten Player of the Year should be.
"JaJuan Johnson," Sullinger said, nominating the Purdue senior big man. "No Robbie Hummel, consistent scoring, consistent rebounding, consistent winning. JaJuan Johnson has been doing it all for them." -
Midstate01I have no problem with JJ being POY. But DPOY!?? No way. And sully not being unanimous is just stupid.
-
Cleveland BuckI would have voted for Johnson for POY, the rest of them look fine. Coach of the Year could have gone to Painter, Matta, or even Beilein. Can't really argue with any of them.
-
se-alumNo problem w/ Johnson getting POY. Craft should've been DPOY w/o question.
-
stroupsSully not being unanimous is beyond stupid... somebody has some sour grapes

coaches or media.
Sully is good, but I have more issue with Taylor not being unanimous that Sully, and more issue with Taylor not being player of the year than Sully, though I would have voted Johnson for the award as well.
Painter had COY locked up as soon as Purdue didnt tank with the Hummell injury, right or wrong. Beilen I think before Matta as well. But that all comes down to if you want to reward the coach who overachieved compared to pre-season picks or the coach who did what he was supposed to do, in dominating fashion.
BTW, Indiana is the only team without a single name printed on those teams -
Ty WebbThis may be a stupid question...
But is Coach Painter any realtion to Curtis Painter, former QB at Purdue? -
Hb31187Is it really that out of the question for Johnson to get DPOY?
-

No, I think Craft probably did better personally but he is a freshman and he'll get a couple more cracks at it. Painter had COY wrapped up when the Boilers didn't fold like a cheap lawn chair when Hummel went down like Laley said. Ohio State fans are kinda used to these conference awards going to others based on "over achievement" by the media...whatever. -
CinciX12I don't think Sullinger is national player of the year, so I'm okay with that. Craft got screwed over by the freshman problem. And Matta didn't exactly have to put his coaching skills to use much like Painter did at Purdue. Agree with it all.

The problem I have with someone like Johnson getting defensive player of the year is that he doesn't have to play good defense to get DPOY. He can just stand in the paint and wait for penetrators to come in the lane and then block their shot. Or he gets rewarded for getting beat by his man then blocking his shot. Someone like Craft has to work 100x harder than a shot blocker and should be rewarded for the job he has done on the best guards in the league.
Lauderdale is constantly getting praised by commentators for his great defense because he is a shot blocker. But if you actually watch an OSU game, Lauderdale is a terrible defender. Being a former pt. guard I would rather see it go to a guard who works his ass off than a shot blocker that waits for guys to come his way. -

He didn't? He lost the national POY from last year. OSU wasn't picked to win the Big 10 nor did many consider OSU a national title contender. OSU ends up 29-2, wins Big 10, and #1 in the country. Sorry, I think the guy did a phenom job this year. -
Nashley25Agree 100 %. I think the only reasons why Craft didn't get DPOY is b/c he is a freshman and he doesn't start.

redstreak one
And being a former post player, I hate when my guards would do nothing but gamble on steals for cheap easy layups making me rotate over to stop penetration because I was a dominating shot blocker!bucks36;703027 wrote:The problem I have with someone like Johnson getting defensive player of the year is that he doesn't have to play good defense to get DPOY. Are you seriously that ignorant of post defense? Watch Johnson's next game, he does a lot more than just stand in the paint (lol) and wait for guards to come in so he can swat them. -

And preseason/early season projections. Everyone knew from day one that Johnson would either be a rock for Purdue or they'd be a joke. With Craft, he was looked at as a freshman who would contribute, but it seemed like as the season progressed his importance grew and grew. But it didn't seem he was talked about as a key player until the Big 10 season was underway and he had those great defensive performances against guys like Moore and McCamey, so he didn't have that long term hype behind him. -
wkfana couple of thoughts from my pee brain.....
1. I don't have much of an issue with painter being COY. Losing Hummel and still finishing 2nd in the cofnference is quite an accomplishment. I'm sure that Matta was a close 2nd.
2. I do not understand why the guy who was Big Twn player of the week for more than 50% of the weeks is not POY. I think Johnson is good...but comeon...
3. Giving awards to seniors over underclassmen given #2 above is turning the award into a lifetime achievement award. If that is how it is to be awarded...change the name to SOY (Senior of the Year). I feel the same with something I heard from the 'experts' that the National POY should go to the best player on the best team. if that is the case, re-name the award. -
PrescottMatta's team won the league by TWO games. Matta and Painter both did great jobs, but Matta won. He should have been the COY.

Not saying that is all Johnson does. The point I was trying to make is that is is a hell of a lot harder to guard the Jordan Taylors and Taylor Battles of the league than the Dallas Lauderdales of the league. Did you watch Johnson go against Sullinger? Sullinger had his way by using his strength. Defensive player of theYear shouldn't be all about blocking shots and that is what it came down to IMHO.
Also, why was Craft the only unanimous selection to the All Defensive team but didn't get DPOY.
