Triple option style differences between the Academies

    http://www.hometownannapolis.com/news/nas/2010/12/08-54/Army-counters-Navy-with-different-kind-of-option.html

"...Navy operates out of a spread formation with a fullback positioned directly behind the quarterback and two slotbacks lined up just outside the tackles and one step off the line of scrimmage. ...Navy's triple-option offense was created by Paul Johnson when he was offensive coordinator at Georgia Southern. The idea of positioning the slots near the line of scrimmage so they could better be used in the passing game was taken from run-and-shoot guru Mouse Davis.

Johnson steadily evolved the offense while serving as offensive coordinator at Hawaii and head coach at Georgia Southern. He called a high percentage of run-based read option plays as head coach at Navy, but has done less of that since becoming head coach at Georgia Tech. ..."

"...Army has created a unique option package with the base alignment altering from a split backfield to a half wishbone. The Black Knights have installed a variety of veer plays and use bootlegs or waggles to get the quarterback on the perimeter.

"They've added a lot of very good wrinkles to the offense. They're running a lot of counters and doing a lot of misdirection. They utilize their slotbacks in fly sweep action and you'll see the inside trap and the outside veer - a lot of things that are unlike what we do and keep you off-balance in a variety of ways," Navy defensive coordinator Buddy Green said. "Now we're still going to get the option. They've just incorporated some other elements that make them tough to defend."

On of the great games of the rivalry referenced here along with a great football family...the Baldingers.

"No affront to ESPN's Lee Corso, but a big college football game wasn't always about wearing a giant mascot head while frat boys with painted faces and bare chests jumped up and down in the background on national television.

It was once about Army. It was once about Navy. It was always about their gigantic annual rivalry in front of more than 100,000 fans in Philadelphia.

...It was one of the most compelling Army-Navy games ever played, a result so stunning that 60 years later Navy's 14-2 victory still is considered one of the greatest college football upsets of all time.

The crucial play at the end of the half was supposed to be a pass to the other Navy end, Ace Treadwell. (Yet another reason to love 1950 -- guys named Ace were football stars instead of pet detectives. ..."

Billy Yarborough...his story is great...one of working year after year until "I" became something. You can find this story over, and over at Annapolis.

"..."The hard-work mentality that is all over this team is something I've always tried to emulate. That's how I was thinking when I was winning those wind sprints at the end of practice as a plebe. Same as when I was competing on kickoff, field goal and kickoff return teams as a sophomore." ..."

This is awesome. I have seen Coach Niumatalolo cry multiple times in his post game speeches. It's the "phileos" he has for the kids. It is the Brotherhood of Navy Football.

Ken Niumatalolo sees coaching in the Army-Navy game as a privilege

"...Two days before the 111th renewal of the rivalry, the Naval Academy coach actually uses the word "privileged" to describe what it's like to be in that locker room each year. ...

"They'll be in harm's way." Think about that.

We devote many newspaper pages and television shows and radio programs complaining that another malcontent millionaire walked off with Daniel Snyder's checkbook this week, as if it's never happened before.

We hotly debate whether Cam Newton should be paid, assuming every talented college player is paid anyway.

We're enraged by whom the BCS robbed and, if we're from College Park, we complain about how Maryland was sent to run-down RFK for its postseason game while the North Carolina State team it beat in the regular season gets to bask in the sun of Orlando's Champs Sports Bowl.

Do you know what the young men from Navy and Army publicly complained about this week?

Nothing. It's the same thing they complained about last week and the week before that, when they actually could have elicited some real sympathy. The 24 seniors on the Navy football team received their deployment orders on Dec. 1, most of which contained the one locale their family and friends were bracing for: Afghanistan.

...We should all feel as privileged as Ken Niumatalolo. ..."

At this year's spring game I was able to be on the field. Simmons was still wearing the green jersey due to his offseason accident. He was "foaming" at the mouth during the game and you could tell he would have given anything to be out there competing. This kid's a football player and I'm glad he'll be a Marine. This article make me understand that he also respects those who go before him. Wearing on his uniform tomorrow the patch of his childhood friend from the 1st Battalion, 5th Marine Regiment.

If you have ever been to a Navy vs Army game you would know that they play Spirit Spots on the Stadium monitors. Some of them are funny. Some are inspiring. They are from bases and ships all across the world while some are made at the respective Academy.

Here's one made as a tribute to the 2008 Navy team. After watching this, you will be ready for the game. Beat Army!

"Remember, when you carry the ball, you carry the whole Brotherhood within your hands." Coach Niumatalolo

Game day for the greatest rivalry in all of sports.

If the nation wants a Division 1 football game to watch today, it will be the Navy vs Army game. I'm glad it's that way. That's how a great American Classic should be. CBS wanted this game pushed back on the calendar. It gives the Cadets and Midshipmen some extra time over the Thanksgiving holiday with their family and it puts the game as the only game on TV for D1 college football fans.

Both teams have had three weeks off. It's almost like preparing for a Bowl Game. A potential drawback of the timing of the game is an extra week of recruiting for Air Force. Falcons' coaches I'm sure have been out and about, knocking on doors. A win on national TV in the biggest game in College sports, however, is the greatest recruiting tool of all.

One of the biggest secrets over the past 3 weeks has been what uniform will the Midshipment wear? It's been a difficult question to crack and has been as guaded as a government top secret file. Even those can be found out, however. ;)

Being the visiting team today, Navy will apparently wear white jerseys with Marine Corps shoulder boards. The pants are believed to be similar to the ones worn in the last two Army-Navy games - blue with a red stripe as a nod to the Marine Corps look. This was decided upon due to the high number of senior football players choosing the Marine route in their service selection.

As a runner and one who completed the JFK 50 mile Ultrmarathon, a race with many servicemen from each of the respective branches, I appreciate this tradition.

The game ball is run to the host Stadium by a company from the Brigade in Annapolis. This year the run is 125.5 miles long to Philadelphia. The tradition started in 1982 as a tribute to those who have served and continue to serve the nation in a time of war. The run started on Friday at 12:00 and will arrive in Philly just prior to the 2:40 start.

Oh yeah,...they run in military issued boots!!!!

My brother is retired Navy, still lives in Norfolk.
This link is in my local paper today, Craig Candeto was a Navy QB in '02-03. He was at GaTech this year working for Paul Johnson, looking to move up in the coaching ranks. He is a class act.
