Stand Navy, down the field, sails set to the sky.
We'll never change our course, so Army you steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh
Sail, Navy, down the field and sink the Army, sink the Army Grey.

    Beat Army!

That is not the second verse.
  • Con_Alma
It certainly is. It is the Lottman-Savino version.

    Verse One
    Anchors Aweigh, my boys
    Anchors Aweigh
    Farewell to college joys
We sail at break of day, 'ay 'ay 'ay
    O'er our last night ashore
    Drink to the foam
    Until we meet once more
Here's wishing you a happy voyage home!

    Bridge

    Heave a ho there! sailor
Ev'rybody drink up while you may
    Heave a ho there! sailor
For you're gonna sail at break of day
    Drink a-way, Drink a-way,
For you sail at break of day, Hey!

    Verse 2

Stand Navy, down the field, sails set to the sky.
We'll never change our course, so Army you steer shy-y-y-y.
Roll up the score, Navy, Anchors Aweigh
Sail, Navy, down the field and sink the Army, sink the Army Grey.

I know they use a different version with enlisted men but I can assure you that this is what it used at the Naval Academy and that is most certainly verse two. I even think there is a third verse out there.

Cool article on Wyatt Middleton today. By the way it is not appropriate to call them "Middies". It's either Midshipmen or Mids. The article misses that piece of etiquette.

"..."It goes beyond respect,'' Army football coach Rich Ellerson was saying at Wednesday's press conference to promote a game that needs no promotion, "to admiration, and eventually to trust. They are going to trust each other with a mission and they are going to trust each other with their lives....''

"...He had a huge decision to make following his sophomore year. Middies and cadets aren't on the hook for their five-year postgraduate military commitment until they begin their junior year. Legitimate pro prospects such as Middleton, a four-year starter with 302 career tackles, might be tempted to transfer so they can eliminate the military hurdles in pursuing an NFL career.

Further complicating matters was that his brother, William, then a Furman cornerback, was a fifth-round draft pick of the Falcons toward the end of Wyatt's sophomore year. An NFL career couldn't have been more realistic to Wyatt.

Except he had no decision to make. He didn't come to the Naval Academy to one day play in the NFL.

"The Academy is home for me,'' he said. "Navy football is home for me. I have great coaches. They care about you a lot. We actually are like a family.'' ..."

"...Then Wyatt Middleton said something about the ramifications of prematurely leaving Navy.

"If I left,'' he said, "I never would have experienced the Army-Navy game. It's more than just a rivalry.''

It's about kids with a cause, kids with purpose and vision, kids such as Wyatt Middleton."

    Found verse three

    Blue of the Mighty Deep
    Gold of God’s Sun
    Let these our colors be
    Till all time be done
    By Severn Shore we learn
    Navy’s stern call
    Faith, Courage, Service True
With Honor Over, Honor Over All.

I believe Wednesday was Service Selection day. I think exams begin the week after the Army game. There's quite a bit on the Midshipmen's minds right now.

    From yesterday's Washington post

    http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/01/AR2010120105710.html

"PHILADELPHIA - Navy quarterback Ricky Dobbs had just finished his interview obligations during Army-Navy media day when he spotted Army linebacker Stephen Anderson getting ready to sit down for lunch at his assigned table. The senior co-captain made it a point to embrace his adversary from West Point, then spoke glowingly about the rivalry and how humbled he was to be a part of this most meaningful of games for the final time.

The mutual admiration between the two was one of many such instances on Wednesday, when players, coaches and top officials from both service academies gathered at Lincoln Financial Field to commence the buildup for the 111th Army-Navy game, which this season has a decidedly different complexion from previous years. ..."

That is some random Academy version (there are multiple versions), but not the one recognized by the Navy. Trust me, I had to sing it enough during CPO induction.

I am trusting you. Everyone sings the second verse. It's the most popular verse.

What I posted is hardly random and pretty easy to verify although I do agree it is an "Academy" version. I think that's exactly what I posted.

Definitely just an academy thing as it's not used in the fleet. Probably just for the rivalry to Army.
  • Con_Alma
...and it is the Academy that's playing after all.

Chase Burge from Fairfield unions final regular season game for navy. So gooo navy. Though as my wife (who's an officer in the USAF) would say, gavy.

Gotta go with my crew....Go Army!!!!!
  • Tiernan
I texted your version to my son Con and he said that is definitely an Academy Only thing. But he and his buddies sometimes sing that version because some of the officers like it when they all get loaded at McPs in Coronado.
  • Con_Alma
Thanks. I already knew it was an "Academy thing". I even posted what version it was!! I think it's the others that are questioning it.

Are you suggesting that officers sometimes drink??? ;)

There is a series on Navy Seniors leading up to the Army game. Here's a good one on Ricky Dobbs.

True Navy fans are going to miss Ricky Dobbs. He is the face of Navy Football and his personalty is magnetizing. It's interesting that he almost left when at NAPS because he was not at QB. Then again when Paul Johnson left he almost followed him to Georgia Tech!

"..."All it would have taken was for Coach Johnson's number to show up on my phone and I was going to go. I would have been on the first plane to Atlanta," Dobbs said this week. "Fortunately, God had it in his plan for me to stay here...."

Some things I think reflect Dobbs' personality from the article.

"..."All the NAPS coaches said that whenever Ricky got in the huddle, things changed. He had that ability to take charge and get the players around him fired up," Jasper said. ..."

"..."Ricky is so hard to read. He will go down as the most complex quarterback I've had in terms of what makes him tick," Jasper said. "He's not a rah-rah guy, not real emotional or much of a talker. He's just going to go out there and play his game."

Jasper has been tough on Dobbs at times and the quarterback did not deny that it's been difficult to handle at times. Dobbs is a naturally optimistic individual with a strong spiritual side and believes in positive reinforcement. ..."

"...Ricky is a tremendous young man. He's been spectacular on the field and even better off the field," Niumatalolo said. "I haven't met anyone here at the academy who doesn't like Ricky - military officers, professors, athletic department personnel. I really think Ricky epitomizes what we're looking for here at the Naval Academy. He has been a model Midshipman and a great football player."

Dobbs usually begins a post-game press conference by thanking God and often quotes scripture. Niumatalolo will never forget rushing to the quarterback's locker at halftime of last year's SMU game in order to scream at him for poor play and found the soft-spoken youngster reading the bible. The fiery head coach could only pat Dobbs on the shoulder and ask him to please play better in the second half.

"Ricky is a spiritual giant. His faith is very important to him and is what makes him the strong person that he is," Niumatalolo said. "Ricky does have a certain charisma. He's just a genuine person and everyone is naturally drawn to him."..."

    Bravo Zulu Ricky...now Beat Army.
