Miami (FL) fires Randy Shannon

Yes that's where all of the Gruden to ND rumors got started. He was in high school in South Bend while his dad was there but chose not to go to ND because he didn't think he would be able to play there.

Tons of rumors right now that Gruden is ready to accept, even a NYT writer is in on it http://twitter.com/DVNJr/status/9047378279530496

I'm good with this decision, I just wonder if he'd be a good college coach.

He's enthusiastic so I think he would do well.

Gruden would have instant credibility with blue chip college recruits. Kids would line up to play for him. He also has a lot of charisma and as we've seen on Monday Night Football and ESPN NFL Live, is a good speaker. He would have no problem helping Miami gain support from alumni and in the community. Those are two very large parts of being a college football coach. Finally, as we have also seen from his clips on NFL where he takes players into the room to breakdown film, he knows his football.

Gruden would be a great hire. I really doubt this is true though. Gruden has turned his nose up at far better jobs

Manny Navarro the U reporter for the Miami Herald just tweated this:

anny_Navarro Hearing Jon Gruden has agreed to $3.4 mil deal to become #UM's next coach. Trying hard to confirm it officially.

Man I'm shocked. Monday Night Football should begin somewhat awkwardly haha
  • Laley23
Bill Lynch will take the job.

Gruden has come out and said he is committed to ESPN and Monday Night Football and won't be coaching Miami.

"I am committed to Monday Night Football and to ESPN," Gruden said in a statement. "I enjoy working with Mike, Jaws and our entire crew and am just trying to get better at this job."

That means little to me until somebody else is hired^

Yeah I agree, it isn't as strong of a denial as Saban's "I will not be the next head coach at Alabama" or whatever it was and we all know how that turned out.

He was fired because his teams didn't produce in the 4 years that he was there, despite the preseason hype/recruiting classes.

To play the race card is asinine. This is 2010, let's be real here.

Too play the race card is idiotic because he was hired. How can they play the race card if they gave him an opportunity? Just makes no sense to me and is just one thing some people like to bitch about, even when there is nothing to bitch about.

Ha ha, Miami apparently discriminates against everyone. Firing a slightly better than .500 black coach after firing an old white guy with a record of 60-15 and a national championship.

I also don't understand the "he didn't have time to turn it around". They were 7-6 in Coker's last year....and were basically stagnant for four years. It wasn't like he was trying to rebuild from scratch; guy showed no progress whatsoever in four years (unless you count how he got all their hopes up with a 9-win season last year...only to disappoint again this year).

Anyway, I hope Miami finds someone shitty. Just a personal preference.

That will happen when Jacory Harris is your best QB

He never said he won't be coaching Miami all he said is he's committed to MNF and ESPN. That's not a denial. He's still Miami's #1 choice and are in talks with him.

Shannon was/is a good coach. The expectations are too much for the Hurricanes they have been either the 3rd or 4th best team in Florida depending on Central Florida the last few years. The man deserved another year or two.
  • jordo212000
I would bet a lot of money that Gruden will not be in Miami. He's had much better offers than this and he has said no. If he were to go to the college level, I'd think he would go somewhere with a passionate fan base. The Hurricane (and generally all fanbases in the state of Florida, save one or two exceptions) fanbase is a pretty big joke IMO. They only get excited when their team is national championship contender. Otherwise they stay home. What has been their attendance down there lately?
  • karen lotz
Not sure, but I think one of the talking heads at ESPN tweeted that Gruden is paid $5 million for his services. Why would he take the reported 3.4 mill to have to put up with all of the stuff that would go along with coaching. I want to say he has a son in high school and he helps coach them when time allows it. He has to be pretty happy with his current situation.

No he didn't, he couldn't even develop players. He's a good DC not HC at this level.

still hearing Gruden or Mullen. Why not Christobal ?

CaneSport.com reports that John Gruden will be next coach at Miami "barring a last minute glitch."
    hmmm

They expect big things at Miami and winning 7 games isn't enough. I am guessing the tipping point was losing to USF. I imagine Miami never thought they'd see the day where USF would beat them.

What has Christobal done? They want a big name hire, not someone from FIU
  • Ytowngirlinfla
Yep all Miami message boards are going crazy right now with the canesport.com update. Looks like 4 yrs 17 mil.
  • karen lotz
Someone else said there is a meeting tomorrow between Gruden and the AD to finalize the contract.
