Week 10: Michigan def. Illinois, 67-65 in 3 OT

  • Trueblue23
25 minutes time of possession, 5 turnovers and 67 points in the #15 ranked defense in the nation. Michigan's offense is GOOD.

They give up 60+ points to Illinois go to triple overtime against Illinois and win their 6th game of the year to become bowl eligible. The team promptly stormed the field and acted like they had won the National Championship. Somewhere Bo Schembechler is shaking his head

Problem with this team = shitty defense.

Look at FSU 2 years ago.. their defense was just as bad as ours, now they're NASTY. We can and will turn it around.

Imagine this offense with an AVERAGE defense, not even a great D. This Offense + Average D = me very happy with the direction of this program.

This offense is clicking on all cylinders and im curious as to how some of the local OSU fans will discredit Michigans offense again this week.

Lol...yeah the offense is fine. Why so interested in what OSU fans think? They think the same damn thing as the rest of the country, the offense is overshadowed by such a shitty defense, especially in the BIG 10.

I understand that anytime your team wins you feel good about it, but damn I'd be fucking pissed at my team if they let fucking Illinois take me to 3 OT's and rolled 560+ on me AT HOME.

Interested because no matter what numbers Michigans offense puts up, some crazy OSU fan puts a spin on it to make it sound like Michigans offense is gimmicky and isnt working.

Kinda waiting on how they spin OSU only putting up 290 yds on Illinois and Michigan putting up damn near 700. My guess is theyll probably skip straight to "well we'll stomp you in a few weeks so it doesnt matter"

And did i miss the memo that you have to bold things in your posts to make a point? lol

Well, it is gimmicky/Big East like...the lack of D focus in the Big 10 is unforgivable. Frankly embarrassing.

Not to mention overly dependent on a QB that can run it.
  • Hb31187
Which is exactly why Greg Robinson will be s.o.l sooner than later

As OSU fans say after an ugly win, a win is a win.

What exactly makes it gimmicky anway? When I watch the games, I see reads, hand offs, and forward passes.

I agree. Their offense is great, Rodriguez and Magee know exactly what they are doing. The defense is just downright terrible. I'm not sure how it is possible for a Michigan team to have this bad of a defense, seeing how when I was growing up they always had a nasty defense. If they could get it fixed, this would be a very interesting team. However, Rich Rod fires defensive coordinators like it is a bodily function. I'm not saying Robinson is doing a good job (he isn't) but it is hard to be successful when you have zero continuity.

Like I've said though, I would have been sick to my stomach if I was the AD/President today. The program is going the wrong direction. I love Ohio State and I hate seeing Michigan stoop to these levels (rushing the field after giving up 60 points and beating a Big 10 also ran)

Well, yeah...but some are ugly and some are tragic..lol

I have more of a problem with finding the "perfect" personnel to run it more than anything.

Good to Mich win today. That was their biggest win in quite sometime.
I got no problem with rushing the field if thats what they want to do. I mean it is kinda laughable but understandable too.

Oh you mean they have an offense like the number 1 team in the country (Oregon). Wake up Francis it isn't 1997 anymore. The spread is going to be a fixture in college football for the foreseeable future and Michigan is currently executing it very well. They just can't stop anybody

I agree with the 1st paragraph, not necessarily with the 2nd. The defense is amazingly bad. I watch Youtube videos of pre-2008 Michigan teams to remember that they used to play defense.

But they aren't headed the wrong way. You can fix the defense. Not this year, of course. Probably not next. But you can fix it. With this offense and a top 50 defense in 2012, it could be fun.

How do they get there? Well, that's for the AD and coaches to figure out. If they can't, THEN it is headed in the wrong direction.

Like I said, it wasn't the win or because it was Illinois. The emotion after a 3 OT game where 132 points are scored is most likely going to erupt into celebration.

Guess they should have just shook hands and quietly walked to the locker room.

Come on that was a huge win for Mich. Why not rush the field they just saved their season and a job or a few jobs.

pure speculation, but again, as a tsun fan, you have to look at it that way--to each his own, brother.

Well, thanks I guess. But I'm not sure what rushing the field has to do with optimism. ;)

I'm not sure if I buy that it saves his job. First of all, he beat Ron Zook. Although Illinois is an ok team, with Zook at the helm, they could very well lose out. There is a good chance that they will lose to Wisconsin and OSU. If they go 7-5 and lose their bowl game, they will probably think hard about letting Rich Rod loose. Now this is a lot of ifs, but it is not out of the realm of possibility.

Don't get me wrong, not happy at all about the defense. But look at Illinois. 3-9 last year and an awful defense. Brought in a new D staff in the off season and before this game had the 12th ranked scoring and 15th overall defense in the nation. With the youth Michigan has on defense, it isn't out of the question to get the defense to at least average.

But they have to make changes.

There was a lot of talk that just a few weeks ago that things have been turned around NOW for Michigan. Now you're saying wait for 2012. I mean you're putting a lot of faith on a product to get better that has been subpar thus far.

Ill defense was NOT near as bad as UM. I have been around a LONG time...I am not sure I have seen a defense as bad as UM on the season. Offense looked great today. They kept "pace". But that isn't going to get you consistant wins. Matter of time? Thats a matter of opinion. Nobody really knows. RichRod has never had outstanding defenses overall. I wouldn't be too optimistic thats going to change. And it certainly wont' change in just one or two seasons.
