He's coming from Northern Illinois. Before that, he was at Southern Illinois, Emporia State and Saginaw Valley State. No-nonsense type of guy. Has been a winner everywhere he's coached (career record as a HC of 127-73). 2-3 record versus the Big Ten. Has only had one season in which the team he was coaching won less games than the year before (2004, won 10 games at SIU, 2005 won 9 games).

He's had health issues, battling kidney cancer several years ago. All-in-all I think it's a "wait and see" type of hire from the Gophers; if his pedigree from smaller schools can translate into the Big Ten, it could be a very good hire. If it can't, well ... we're back to square one a bit.

Haha, he's West Kansas for sure - should hear him talk too. That's a trip. Guy can coach though.

What are you basing that on?

Nothing really I guess. Just pretty underwhelming. There were a lot of good coaches out there for the taking and they settle for the guy coaching Northern Illinois? I guess it could work out, but to me this is the difference between the Big 10 and SEC. Look at the coaches in that conference and then look at ours. We have two guys named Jerry Kill and Danny Hope roaming the sidelines

I get that. I had the same initial reaction of "who?" After I looked into his background I do feel better about him though. Took Southern Illinois from the brink of dropping the program to perennial D1 FCS playoff contender. Turned Northern Illinois from 2-10 the year before he got there, to 6-7, 7-6, 10-3. Sounds like he has a system and sticks to it. As I mentioned before, time will tell on if this is a good hire or not ... but I think he has the goods (aka coaching acumen) to do something at the Big Ten level.
