Who is Minnesota's next coach ?

gorocks99Some Alabama radio host is saying Fulmer is headed to the Gophers. Probably nothing, but interesting nonetheless.

Alabama sports radio host Paul Finebaum reported this afternoon that Phil Fulmer is going to Gophers. Nothing but speculation at this point. -

Fulmer and others mentioned. Fulmer's quote from last year means nothing now. He wants to coach. He has connections to put a whole football program together. -
gorocks99^^ You're an SEC guy - what are your thoughts on Fulmer? Would he be a good choice for Minnesota?
-
SpeedofsandI think they will look for a younger guy, but Fulmer would be a strong choice. They have good new facilities, he could probably put a good staff together.
Here is a more recent quote.
IG: Are you still interested in returning to coaching someday?
PF: If I find the right kind of opportunity. I'm not out there putting my name in everything that comes up at all. That's what I did for 30 years, almost 35 years. If the right kind of situation comes up I'm definitely going to be interested in it, yes.

So if he goes to Minny after saying the following, is he really just jumping at the first job or does Minnesota really have a chance to compete nationally just because they're willing to pay some money?:
"Somebody that's committed to winning championships and being the best that they can be, with a chance to compete in a conference that's nationally recognized. I'm not going to go walk into a door somewhere that you have no chance to be successful." -
gorocks99More Fulmer smoke: http://www.govolsxtra.com/news/2010/nov/02/fulmer-minnesota-has-great-potential/
Former Tennessee football coach Phillip Fulmer has emerged as a possible candidate for the head coaching vacancy at Minnesota, according to several media reports.
“Minnesota has great potential, and with its new facilities it’s a place you could recruit to,’’ Fulmer told the News Sentinel on Tuesday night. “I believe it’s a place where you can compete.’’
Fulmer, who was forced to resign near the end of the Vols’ 5-7 season in 2008, was non-committal when asked if he was interested in the Gophers’ position or if he has had contact with the school. -
gorocks99Sources say the U is digging around Dan Mullen as well: http://1500espn.com/sportswire/QA_with_U_president_Bob_Bruininks_on_the_coaching_search110310
I think that'd be a fantastic hire. -
j_crazykevin sumlin would get smashed as bad as brewster in the B10. his philosophy doesn't fit well. mullen would be the best hire IMO. but if you can't get him you have to at least talk to Malzahn.
edit: just read the part about sumlin running a blended spread. that might work. his current shenanigans would get beasted. -
gorocks99Interesting side-note about Mississippi State - two of Minnesota's most legendary coaches, Bernie Bierman and Murray Warmath, coached there prior to taking their posts at Minnesota.
-
gorocks99I'll just throw another name onto the fire, since apparently the U of M is connecting themselves with EVERY COACH ON GOD'S GREEN EARTH:

University of Minnesota: We did not see this one coming, but multiple sources have told FootballScoop that Minnesota athletic director Joel Maturi intends to speak with Navy head coach Ken Niumatololo. -
Manhattan BuckeyeGood lord at this point they might as well be interviewing Bear Bryant and Vince Lombardi.

BlanketHow bout bringing Coach back?

Hayden Fox?? If so, bring on Luther and Dauber! They done a fine job w/ the Minnesota State Screaming Eagles, why not a shot with the Gophers???Blanket;543963 wrote:How bout bringing Coach back? -

A lot of his success was built on getting the best talent when the SEC had some horrible coaches. With the possible exception of Spurrier to Meyer at Florida, every single school has a coach who is substantially better than what they had in the late 1990s.gorocks99;541968 wrote:Fulmer had a great go of it at Tennessee, no doubt. The questions raised in my mind about him are:
1. Was his success a result of being at UT? Could he duplicate this success at another school? Having never been a head coach elsewhere, it's tough to say.
2. Is he too old, or has he lost the fire? Sixty isn't what it used to be, but he isn't a spring chicken anymore.
I think he'd be a "name" coach that would put butts in the seats, and I wouldn't be disappointed in the least if he's announced as the next HC. That said, I would still have those questions in my mind and it would take a couple of seasons for them to fade.
Slimebaum is an idiot who loves to hide behind those "sources" that never pan out. I think he pulled the "sources say" card four or five times for each of the last Tennessee coaching searches, suggesting that a hire was imminent. That's hardly the only time he's done it either.gorocks99;542279 wrote:Some Alabama radio host is saying Fulmer is headed to the Gophers. Probably nothing, but interesting nonetheless.

Fulmer was known for having largely horrible coaching staffs, particularly post-2000. I'll put it to you this way. In 16 years as the head honcho at UT, he hired exactly THREE assistants who became head coaches elsewhere: Lovie Smith (two years at UT, secondary coach 1993 and 1994), Doug Marrone (one year at UT, tight ends coach, 2001), and Dave Clawson (one year at UT, offensive coordinator, 2008). Dan Brooks was probably his best overall hire from a positional standpoint, but the guy had freakin' Jimmy Ray Stephens and Greg Adkins running the offensive line since 2001, which goes a long way toward explaining the plummet in offensive effectiveness.
Fulmer took over for Johnny Majors in questionable fashion (although I'd argue that it's overblown); at the time, Fulmer was a hot head coaching candidate at several schools. Undoubtedly fueled by that, he never hired an assistant who could ever pose a real threat to him as the head man at any point down the line. -
thedynasty1998I never thought Fulmer was all that great, but if he's someone Minnesota is seriously considering, why not go after him now. He can go ahead and recruit and get things in motion.
I wonder what recruiting will be like this year? I know that every year coaches are fired, but it's usually not mid season when you are competing for recruits. -
gerb131Can't stand fat Phil but he would be a good get you can't fault his coaching resume.
Laurence Maroney should be out of work soon too. -
gorocks99Fulmer has apparently said he's no longer considering the position.
Word is the administration is willing to offer 8 years/$2.6-$3 million per year. For that kind of length and cash it better be a big name. No big chances this time. -
Ty WebbIt should be Mike Leech or Dan Mullen
-
karen lotzSan Diego State's Brady Hoke is a "serious" candidate for the Minny opening.

Dan Mullen? Are you kidding? -
Ty WebbAnd who would be a better choice that is a viable candidate than Mullen
He is leading the resurgance of what has been one of the worst BCS programs in the last 20-25 years and he is a proven winner. -
karen lotzI'd say Charlie Strong. Maybe Florida's current TE coach.

Ty WebbIf you can't realize what Mullen has done in the past, what he's doing now,and say he would one hell of a hire, you know nothing about college football
