Brutus and the Ohio mascot.

OU has bigger problems to worry about than mascot eligibility...but still now you're suffering national embarrassment because you let some chump don your mascot and make a fool of himself.

National embarrassment? Most blog-style things I've read on this deal are more along the line of "mascots bringing the lulz", usually with lines about how Rufus was more effective physically than the OU defense. I mean, be real, in the grand scheme of things, no one outside of the involved schools cares about this for any reason than to laugh at another "When Mascots Go Wrong" story/video.

It'd be a huge fail if OU hired a terrorist as their mascot who proceeded to blow up Ohio Stadium (which would suck cuz I would be dead)....but for God's sake they hired a mascot..it's not like there's a lot of mascot imposters out there.

Also, Athens is different than a lot of schools. If you see a 19 year old kid in Athens, there's a 98% chance he goes to OU. So obviously the administration saw a 19 year old kid and just assumed he was an OU student.

It's not that big of a deal...no publicity is bad publicity.

Maybe, but the part of this dude not being an OU student is getting notice (not HUGH, but still getting noticed). How did this guy get there? Did OU put him on the pep bus? Did they not check his ID, did anyone else notice that the guy isn't a student?

The OU mascot reminds me of Rudy when he wasn't allowed to paint the ND helmets with the gold chips because he wasn't a ND student. This guy just wanted to tackle Brutus.

Does anyone find it friggin' hilarious that when the OU mascot was interviewed he didn't hear about his firing but said, "he didn't care!"

BTW, Mike and Mike just showed the best mascot fights.

It makes perfect sense that this guy is a Hocking Student

That's the part that's making me scratch my head. Stop and think about this for a second. You have a guy - who is not an Ohio student - representing the university at sporting events. You would think that someone, somewhere would have at least popped onto a university computer terminal and checked out his status.

The twit and dirt bag admits that he applied for the "job" just so he would have an opportunity to pull this stunt and now could care less that he's been fired. Not only do we now have to hear all the jokes about how the OU coaching staff must have taught the Bobcat mascot how to tackle, but the fact that this clown misrepresented the university that he doesn't even attend blows my mind.

By the way...where was Ohio State security? Don't they at least check ID's before allowing the opposing cheerleading squads and mascots to enter the stadium? If they don't holy crap...if I were a terrorist (as Sportsandlady indicates above) I just found a great way to do the dastardly deed. 105,000 plus....BOOM! Seriously.....

I'd agree with this. Its funny for us/common fans. But OU is definitely kicking themselves right now. The OSU game is a major cash cow for them. They get a lot of money to travel a very short distance for a big football game. The problem is, OU is expendable to OSU, OSU can pay any MAC school to come in to Ohio Stadium. So OU really doesn't need their mascot trying to wreck OSU's pregame and make them seem like a less desirable opponent in the future.

There is down at the bottom of the article.
Hat tip: Slanch Report, which has additional, field-level footage of the altercation. Pictures via this message board, which includes (unsubstantiated) entries by a poster who claims to be the guy in the Brutus costume at the time (via Deadspin).
Nice to see that they referred to us as "this message board."

This video was the funniest thing I have watched for some time. I was literally in tears watching this at work. Watching the bobcat chase him through the cheerleaders with his head bobbing up and down...hahaha!
  • bigkahuna
1 of the funniest things is to see a mascot running; I don't know why. I too was laughing with tears running down my face.
