Purdue at Notre Dame

Offensive line looked great in first half but Purdue started bringing more pressure in second half. Crist really didn't have time to get anything going, but he also didn't really take advantage on the chances he did get. Threw 2 balls out of the end zone in Floyd's general direction. He did make a nice throw to TJ Jones for the TD. A win is a win though and this defense COULD keep them in games until the offense can click.

It's just too early to go overboard with excitement but I am pretty happy with what I saw earlier after the last several years. A big test is on the horizon in Michigan. Can't wait for next weekend.

I'm still pissed at Floyd for that fumble. He hangs on to that thing and it is essentially ballgame.

But thats just trying to find something to complain about. Overall lots of good things, just wish we hadn't let Purdue make it close at the end.

Just got back from the game. Some thoughts:

1 - I was in section 4, right behind the band, row 32. Amazing seat. I almost creamed my pants. I had this 60-year old season ticket-holding lady sitting next to me and she told me most of the idiosyncrasies of a Notre Dame stadium experience.

2 - Cierre Wood....me like. He's going to be something.

3 - Manti Te'o blew literally an entire drive with like three wiffs in a row, but other than that he looked sweet.

4 - Michael Floyd's career has been a litany of mistakes, and yet he's so good. Fumble at North Carolina freshmen year on the goal line? Failing to turn around last year against Navy and causing that INT on the goal line? Fumbling today on the goal line? I hope his yearly "fuck Notre Dame" move is done with.

5 - The defense was very impressive for the first week. As many had hoped, it appears Jon Tenuta was a dipshit last year. The defensive backs looked so improved.

6 - Brian Smith, please leave quietly. You suck more dick than sleeper.

7 - Crist's deep ball doesn't hold a candle to Clausen's. His two throws to Floyd near the endzone didn't have the necessary height in my opinion, let Floyd get that jump ball!

8 - I expected more from the receiving corp. Riddick did nothing, even with the defensive backs rolling coverage toward Floyd literally every play.

9 - This team has so much potential. There were many mistakes made today, but none of them cannot be fixed rather quickly. BRING ON THOSE FUCKING WOLVERINES!!!

It's only one game but ND hasn't played defense like that in a LONG time. Let's hope they continue to play that way. Break out game from Gary Gray.

I agree about the sleeper comment but Brian Smith played a pretty good game IMO. He blew up several plays yesterday.

Agreed. Smith played quite well, imo.

You guys do realize he let up that touchdown right? It reminded me of last year's Michigan game; against an even more mobile Michigan QB, it could be trouble.

Purdue is better than UConn. Marve was pretty awful in what, the first start of his career or something? As the season goes on, Marve will get better and so will Purdue. The UM/ND game will be close.

IMO, the entire defense let up in that series, they had a huge momentum shift go against them. Still think Smith played a pretty good game along with the rest of the defense. I said going in to this year that the defense was my main concern and so far so good. They need to keep playing that way and this could be a very good season for ND.

Will ND share the blueprint, with OSU, on how to beat Purdue?

Great game for the DBs, especially in comparison to last season. The new schemes, as of right now, appear to put them in positions to make plays. They obviously have the talent based on their HS careers, but finally looks like they have the coaching to put that talent to use.

I dont want to get to excited over a single game, but the DBs were very impressive imo. Even on some of the sacks/pressure on the QB they had solid coverage which resulted in "no plays" for Purdue.

The biggest concern was the extreme inability for the LBs/DEs to keep containment on Marve. Robinson could have a field day running the ball. Marve wasnt able to turn many into huge games, but even so he was able to find roll-out space whenever he wanted.

I think Ole Brian Smith might have gotten a little talking to in the film room by the coaches.

    Per his twitter @BCSmith58:
I personally have some work to do to get better for this weeks game. Whatever it takes to win, 58 is gonna make it happen!!

Good, he was the only part of the defense I wasn't impressed with. Manti Te'o's jitters will calm down for Michigan; he will destroy, I have no doubt.
  • rock_knutne
Just because Smith says he has to improve his play on his Twitter page doesn't mean he didn't play a solid game........a lot of guys are going to say they need improvement after game #1. I fail to see where Smith played badly, impressive no, but he was solid.

Extreme inability to contain? They gave up ONE TD all day. I thought the DB's and LB's swarmed all day long when ever Marve or anyone else tried to find the edge.

I know. But they let Marve get outside the box all day. With Robinson that wont work. With Marve, it will/did.

not overly impressed with the Offense, but this defense looked really good. That might be a byproduct of playing a (seemingly) weak Purdue Offense. UM looks to be a good test for this defense.

one good solid shot on Robinson early, and his head will be on a swivel the rest of the day...I've got a feeling Manti will destroy.

Agreed. The defense needs to get into Robinson's head early. If he gets confidence early on, it could be a long day for the Irish D.

Easier said then done with a mobile QB like Robinson. That being said, I am not totally sold on him after just one game. Ya gotta prove it on a consistant basis. Its certainly a start.
But same could be said about ND defense. I believe last year they shut out Nevada, 35-0 and we were hearing exact same comments as we are on this thread.
Both will play out as the season progresses.

    ^^^ I agree- that's why I said "one" ;)

sjm, what did you think of your first game at Notre Dame Stadium? What did you do/see before the game?
