Saturday September 4th, 3:30PM on NBC
The first game of the Brian Kelly era, lot's of excitment in South Bend and rightfully so. Kelly's been saying and doing all the right things, reminds me alot of when Lou Holtz first arrived at ND.
This is a game ND should win on paper but paper doesn't play the games. Time for Kelly to get the Irish on track.
GO IRISH!!!! -
slingshot4everNotre Dame wins 28-21.
-
Rebel_ I.N.S.ND 38-24

vball10setNotre Dame at the buzzer....24-21
-
TheMightyGatorsI agree....ND in a close one.
-
ptown_trojans_1ND close.
34-31 -
killer_ewokI'm definitely excited. It's a new beginning. Let's hope they've got it right this time with Kelly.
For those of you who live in the valley......WTOV9 (local NBC affiliate) will NOT be showing the ND-Purdue game Saturday. Instead, they're showing the Coastal Carolina-WVU "instant classic" in the making. If not for WPXI Channel 11 (NBC affiliate out of Pittsburgh).....ND fans in the valley would be shit out of luck. WTOV9 still pisses me off with this stuff though.
GO IRISH!!! -
dat dudeAs much as I'd like to see Purdue hang with ND and possibly pull off the upset, I do not see it happening. ND has a ridiculous amount of talent on both sides of the ball. If Kelly is just half as good as he thinks he is, ND wins this one rather easily. I'll take ND 34-17.
-
sjmvsfscs08Notre Dame better fucking win if I'm going to shell out cash for this.
-
cbus4lifeND rolls.
I have an odd, extreme hatred for Purdue. -
Mohican00ND 21-7
-
darbypitcher22Go Boilers.
Kind of encouraged the way Purdue ended the year last year, maybe they're coming back around. Danny Hope will have them ready to go -
OneBuckeyeIt will be a shootout. Purdue's secondary is young but they have a good Dline... I say purdue wins 38-31. Who ever turns the ball over and makes the dumb mistakes will lose this one.

Little DannyND 34

grodtLet's Go Irish! Bragging rights with my friend who goes to Purdue are on the line.
I think the Brian Kelly era gets off to a good start
Notre Dame 38
Purdue 21 -
MulvaI'm gonna go with 27-17 Notre Dame.

sjmvsfscs08So the depth chart for Purdue:
Bold means they don't have eligibility left after 2010. Underlined means they've started in prior seasons.
QB - Dayne Crist (JR*).......................Tommy Rees (FR)
RB - Armando Allen (SR)..............Cierre Wood (SO*)
WR - Michael Floyd (JR)...............John Goodman (SO)
WR - TJ Jones (FR)....................Duval Kamara (SR)
WR - Theo Riddick (SO)..................Robby Toma (SO)
TE - Kyle Rudolph (JR).................Tyler Eifert (SO)
LT -Zach Martin (SO)......................Matt Romine (SR)
LG - Chris Stewart (SR).................Chris Watt (SO*)
C - Braxton Cave (SO)......................Dan Wenger (SR)
RG - Trevor Robinson (JR)......................Mike Golic (JR*)
RT - Taylor Dever (JR)..................Andrew Nuss (JR)
So basically Notre Dame is super young and talented on offense, doesn't really make a coach feel safe because experience is such a nice thing to have.
DE- Ethan Johnson (JR)...........................Hafis Williams (JR)
NG- Ian Williams (SR)............................Sean Cwynar (JR)
DE- Kapron Lewis-Moore (JR)......................Emeka Nwanko (SR)
OLB- Darius Fleming (JR).........................Prince Shembo (FR)
MLB- Carlo Calabrese (SO).......................Anthony McDonald (JR)
MLB- Manti Te'o (SO).......................Danny Spond (FR)
OLB- Kerry Neal (SR?).........................Brian Smith (SR)
CB- Darrin Walls (SR).........................Lo Wood (SO*)
CB- Gary Gray (JR)........................Robert Blanton (JR)
S- Harrison Smith (SR)......................Dan McCarthy (JR)
S- Jamoris Slaughter (SR?).....................Zeke Motta (SO) -
sherm03I think that ND wins this one 24-14.
And Gary Gray or Harrison Smith will be torched for one of those touchdowns. -

Not saying that will or won't happen. But it's a crucial topic for the season. Outside of Dayne Crist, the defensive backs will make or break this season (Ian Williams at NG is probably third most important vital part).
Look at the Notre Dame personal who played considerably last season and return:
Gary Gray was a four-star cornerback, ranked #6 in 2007. Being form the south, he had offers from Tennessee, Auburn, Georgia Tech, South Carolina, among others. Darrin Walls was a four-star cornerback, ranked #7 in 2006. He garnered offers form Michigan, Penn State, and, oh, Florida. Robert Blanton was a four-star cornerback, ranked #15 in 2008. He received offers from Michigan, Cal, Oregon, etc. Harrison Smith was a four-star athlete, ranked #25 in 2007. He received offers from Alabama, Stanford, Tennessee, Virginia Tech, Auburn, etc.
All highly recruited and thought to be tremendous players by everyone. Why though, did they suck dick last fall? Don't get me wrong, four-star players bust all of the time, it's very common. But for an entire unit of guys so good to be just completely terrible? It doesn't make sense.
Take Harrison Smith, he ran a 4.38 in HS. But let's be honest, every time we saw him on camera he was "out of position." But that's my point, was he really out of position, or was he very in position for a terrible defensive scheme? Guys that fast aren't very out of position unless they're dumber than sleeper. I mean I was a defensive coordinator in high school last season, we called blitzes less predictable than Jon Tenuta. It's one thing to blitz and put your backs on an island, it's another thing to blitz constantly with such a futile scheme as to put your defensive backs on islands so big and so constantly. Jon Tenuta absolutely ruined 2009 in my opinion, more so than Charlie Weis.
That said, I'm pretty excited to see what scheme Diaco runs that will hopefully not fuck over his defensive backs so often. Am I predicting a complete 180-degree turnaround? No. But they aren't chanting "BIA" (Best In America) because they're delusional schizophrenics, they went through hell last season and want to show America who good they can be.
I expect the defensive backs to be much, much better than last season. That's not saying much, and with so little depth at safety, they won't be world-beaters. But still, I just can't buy into the belief All-American HS players grew cement boots suddenly prior to 2009. -
sherm03Those are all very valid points SJ.
And for the sake of the Irish...I hope you are right and that Diaco has them turned around. -
TiernanPurdue takes this one ending the Brian Kelly "era" before it begins.

I would think there are a ton more WVU fans in the Valley than there are ND fans.killer_ewok;465227 wrote:I'm definitely excited. It's a new beginning. Let's hope they've got it right this time with Kelly.

#1. I think you're wrong on that one.
#2. You're an NBC affiliate...show what the fuck you're supposed to show. -

Are you serious; you do realize that WTOV9's viewing area covers a sizable portion of West Virginia, including MORGANTOWN?killer_ewok;466894 wrote:#1. I think you're wrong on that one.

The EqualizerWTOV didn't care about WV until
#1 Rodriguez got them into a big boy phase and bangwagons galore popped out of the woodwork.
#2 #2 Big Red sent Busick (does he play?) and Repella
What we have is the same asshole who runs their station and hates ND with a passion because he's an OSU homer. This is the guy who put on Penn St vs Cincy (pre-good Cincy) instead of ND-Michigan because he'd "get better ratings". Bullshit. WVU is just his excuse not to show ND games. Good to know in this economy his station can continue to afford to buy out their NBC obligations just so he can stick it to people.
