Brian Kelly to ND?

  • goosebumps
Stoops would make sense. Its the perfect time to get out of Oklahoma. This is what he has to look forward to next year. No Bradford, and a crappy record. Why not get out while he can?

People give Tressel and OSU heat, but talk about a team that cannot win big BCS games. I cannot understand how Stoops has been able to not get heat in the National media.
Stoops has gotten some heat from the national media. Not sure how you missed it.

As for his recent shortcomings in BCS bowls.....maybe he just needs a change of scenery.

Stoops and OKL haven't gotten HALF of the crap that OSU/Tressel have gotten the past few years from the national media, including ESPN. Not even close.

That being said, if it is Stoops, I'd be happy if I were a ND fan. I happen to think he is a very good football coach.

Go back and read what I was responding to. The statement that was made was that Stoops has not gotten heat from the national media. I simply responded and stated that he has. I didn't argue that it was comparable to what Tressel and OSU have gotten, but it's definitely happened.

Ditto about the upcoming ND-Oklahoma series.

What makes everyone think that ND will actually get its first choice? ND no longer has the shine it once did. Coaches like Brian Kelly might be happier where they are unless ND throws a hell of a lot of money at them. Winning ten games at Cincinnati is appreciated. At ND it's expected.

Argue all you want about Stoops and/or Tressel and the "big wins", or losses.....but Tressel has yet to have a season like Stoops is having this year at Okl. Just spanked by an unranked team. 5 losses and probably headed to 6 losses. This from a team who was preseason top 5. Yes, they lost their QB and TE. But if they were THAT good...then they should have been able to fill those spots and only lose a couple/3 at the most.
As for the Big12...well, execept for last year, it hasn't been THAT good or THAT much better then the Big Ten when you look at things closely.
Again, I don't think its been CLOSE as far as media when it comes to OSU/Tress and Stoops/Okl. How often have we heard Mark May rip on Oklahoma? Rarely? On OSU...weekly. Thats just one example of many.
Again, I think Stoops if a FINE coach, and I think ND should be happy "IF" they can get him. Although I do have questions about the "fit" of both. Hard to envision Stoops on the ND sideline for some reason.
Now, if I had my pick...I'd take Kelly over Stoops in a heart beat to be honest. I hope Kelly is available when Tressel retires.

If I am notre dame I am looking for a defensive minded coach. Kelly is not it. Stoops at one time was... now I am not sure. I would try and get the TCU coach, but i think he is kind of old and isnt going anywhere. If ND gets Kelly, I see the same thing happening to him as did Weiss... no D no NC. But I think Kelly can definately get them to a BCS game.

CBF-That wasn't just "their QB." That was the returning Heisman trophy winner. It can't be understated enough. And Jermaine Gresham could've been an early 1st round pick in last year's draft if he came out. He would've been the best TE in the nation this season. Those are two HUGE losses right there. As for last week's loss....I'll chalk it up to Stoops mentally "checking out" because he took the ND job. That's a pretty big distraction. Tressel had his own 4-loss season when they went to the Alamo Bowl and didn't they lose 5 in his first season? Anyways, I'm not going to sit here and try to say Tressel isn't a very good coach because that would be foolish of me. Are we going to sit here and discount what Pete Carroll has done too because USC is having a rough season? That would be ridiculous. Stoops, Carroll, Tressel are all very good/great coaches. I'd put Carroll a notch above both though.

Again, Stoops hasn't taken as much heat from the national media as Tressel has but it has happened. The Big 10 is viewed as inferior and that has a lot to do with it IMO. Maybe having a decent bowl season will improve their image in the eyes of the national media. A poor bowl season will just reinforce their perception of the conference.

Anyways, my top picks would've been Paul Johnson and Jim Harbaugh but I'm thrilled if it's Stoops. I'm not as high on Kelly as some.

Has anyone thought about Ferentz? He would be who I would look at if I were ND.

    Good, accurate post.

My top pick would obviously be Meyer (pipe dream), but Stoops would be the #2. ND hopefully knows not to go after another up and comer (Harbaugh, Fitzgerald). They NEED a seasoned, relatively youg, proven winner. Stoops fits the criteria to a "T". Catholic boy from Ohio, he would do a good job recruiting the Midwest, and hopefully would continue recruiting with his ties in Texas and Oklahama - an area of the country that ND has been missing since Holtz was around.

Winning a national championship at ND is appreciated. At Cincinnati it is IMPOSSIBLE. Will NEVER happen.

Recruiting shouldn't take a hit if it's Stoops either. If anything, defensive player recruiting should pick up. And I also don't see a mass exodus if it's Stoops. I'd take a long, hard look at returning for my Senior year if it's Stoops. Heupel, White, Bradford all prospered on Stoops-coached teams. That rookie salary in '11 is what makes me think they end up leaving. Even then, I give the thought of returning serious consideration.

It could happen this year if Texas loses, Cinci would get to the NC game and could get lucky....

Dick Vitale was on Espn this morning and he said that Bill Cowher would be the best fit for ND.

Vitale is losing it. And ND would be crazy to go the NFL route again after this last mess. College and pro's are too different IMO. I think its very difficult for guys who have been in the pros for a long period of time, to go to college and have to learn how to deal with all the differences from practice time, to recruiting, to school work, fund raising, etc, etc.

Never say never but Cincy is having one of their best years ever and even then they will need help to make the BCS title game. Plus they have to negotiate a pretty good Pitt team on the road. Again, I wouldn't use the words "never" or "impossible" but more like "improbable".

If this were any of the last 3 years, UC would be in the NC game. Its really unfortunate that they picked this year to go undefeated (hopefully)

update--Bob Trumpy just said on WLW that he believes it's a done deal between ND and Kelly, and it will be announced after Cinci's last game--again,this is not my opinion,it's just what Trumpy said about 10 minutes ago....

I think Kelly would be the best hire ND has made since Holtz. A guy who's been a head coach and actually has accomplished something albeit at a smaller level. I think Kelly's personality would be a great fit for Notre Dame as well.

Stoops would be the ideal first choice since he's been a great coach at a high level, but I don't see him leaving Oklahoma. The NFL route would be fine if they hired someone who was a HEAD coach. Obviously this worked for USC and Pete Carroll. I don't see how Jon Gruden or even Bill Cowher wouldn't succeed at ND.
