Orrville Basketball

golfman61I listened on the radio but that loss to Triway in the district was the exact game that came to mind. It also sounded like when we had the lead late we came down and took a couple of quick shots.
-
smanLets hope orrville learned from this game and lets attack and be aggressive the rest of the year! RUN RED RUN!! I remember hearing a certain person yelling that at bball games!! Press and run and press some more!!
-
thePITmanEveryone is bringing up the district final from '05. Interesting little tidbit - the final score of that game was 36-35... Last night, the score at the end of the 3rd quarter for both the JV and Varsity games was 36-35! (Orrville had the lead for both)

riderbbThis team is only going to go as far as the other players will take them, meaning Joey, Sam, Max, and Daniel. Teams have seen this defense shut us down twice now, this game and Lexington. The others need to step up when they play this defense, there should be some wide opens shots. By the way congrats to Triway, great game plan. I love watching them play, they play as a team, great spacing on offense, well disciplined. I agree somewhat with SMAN, I think we should have trapped them when the ball goes to a corner, I also think we should just switch on the picks or double up the ball on the pick trying to force a more upbeat game.

smanI agree riderbb, but if you pressure and attack triway like hiland, timken, and wooster did you create offense. even when orrville was in the 1-3-1 it was soft and non aggressive. Triway has had problems all year with pressure and orrville just let them hold the ball.....i just don't get it? I'll stop on this subject now...i apologize for repeating!! So who is the number 1 now? I say triway.....or will wcal vote one of they're teams no. 1? I think the drawing is next sunday!!

my thoughts exactly. hope we take some lessons away from this. Gotta force the issue against Triway. If we're giving up easy baskets in the half court d...whats the harm in pressing.rrfan wrote: I don't like that loss at all. However, if we learn from it and become better...it really won't mean much it the big picture. I really hate to lose to Triway though.
I think we have to run the table now to grab the 1 seed. Even with our schedule, not sure a 5 loss team gets the nod.
Draw is a week from today. Smithville is rounding into form with Frizell back, Triway got their shot of confidence last night....and we're right there with them.
We need 2 wins this weekend (Lex and Clear Fork). -

Triway has Timken next Friday. If that game goes like the last one did (112-70), we will be a 5-loss team as well. Manchester took Timken into OT this past week, so who knows what can happen, though! If we beat Timken, we are #1. If not, either us or Orrville should be #1. And with Orrville's strength of schedule, I think they're the #1 seed. Since Triway beat Orrville, they are now a solid #2 ahead of Smithville, IMO. Triway has 1 quality win (Orrville). Smithville has 1 quality win (Dalton). Orrville has MANY quality wins.RedRider1 wrote:

Mr. RussellI don't understand how Orrville would still be number one honestly, especially if Smithville beats Dalton this weekend. Regardless, a one or a two is virtually the same thing in my opinion. There are many teams who can knock off anybody in the district.
-
rrfanHonestly as a Orrville fan yes we probably have many more "quality wins", but Triway beat us head to head...hard for me to put Orrville at #1.
We will see but I do agree #1 or #2 does not make much difference to me...Just win in the tourney and the seeds will take care of themself. -
Old RiderSmitty used to hate the seeding. He just wanted to play. If Orrville wants to win a district title, then they will have to beat a Triway or Smithville or some sleeper team. Seeds mean nothing IMO. Shrug this loss and move on. Orrville still has a rough schedule ahead of them and should be a good prep for the tourney.
Teams are gonna do their best to shut Jake and Zack down, unfortunately for us, thats where the scoring stops. We are very limited to who can shoot a consistent jumper and our guard play is so-so outside of Jake.
I hate to be negative, but I have yet to see a district championship team take the floor this year. We are too inconsistent and have only 2 guys that score and when they don't .....we lose! -

I'll second that!Old Rider wrote: Smitty used to hate the seeding. He just wanted to play. -
Old Rider....and until we start playing with that killer instinct....well, we will see the same result in the tourney as we saw saturday!

AND, I'm going to have to second that, too!Old Rider wrote: ....and until we start playing with that killer instinct....well, we will see the same result in the tourney as we saw saturday!
GO FOR THE JUGULAR! -
OrrPrideSad but true with what Old Rider says.......if Jake and Zack don't do the bulk of the scoring we struggle. We must have one of the four other guys really get it going....Sam, Joe, Max and Daniel. I must say Daniel has had a better touch later in the season than he did early on. I kinda felt sorry for the kid, taking the open shot but rarely hitting one.
To me it's a must win against Lex. We gotta get our confidence back up and be ready to roll for tourney time.
As sluggish as we played at Triway, I also gotta say some of the calls were horrible......definately a little "homer" ball going on. I hate to play at Triway, plain and simple. Even when we have won there, I still hate to go there.
Let's finish strong Riders.......practice hard..play hard. -
thePITman^^ LoL, figures. I guess we just can't beat you guys without you being sluggish and getting screwed by the refs, huh?
-
RedRider1For what it's worth, i disagree with orrpride....foul shots were practically even, so no advantage was gained by fouls or foul shots.
And yes we started slow...which I suspected, but we clearly played Triway's style of ball. Our sluggishness was due in part to Triway taking us out of our style.
We shot 50+% from the field, didn't kill ourselves with turnovers and shot 93% from the foul line...most nights thats good enough for a win. We had a 5 point lead with 1 minute to go.
I think we let Triway get too many easy baskets, especially for the decided inside advantage we had.
I'll take my chances that Triway doesnt shoot 60% the next time....the game being on a neutral floor and maybe a little more aggressive play from us.
But I also agree with old_rider...we need a reliable 3rd option. Right now the closest thing we have is Joey, and he can still be wild at times with his shots and decision making. Max may be starting to take that role too. -

A 5 point lead with 1 minute remaining in a low scoring game is a tatamount to a huge lead. Seems they should have stalled the ball as would Triway in that situation.RedRider1 wrote: For what it's worth, i disagree with orrpride....foul shots were practically even, so no advantage was gained by fouls or foul shots.

They're going to need Jake to remain healthy.

Perhaps the coach should take a look at a Jordan Ray for point guard duty in these next games. His shooting's no worse and his ball handling is better than Joe's.
When playing against a running team who applies defensive pressure, Joey will give up the ball. Max, too many turnovers and too many missed layups/shots. -
thePITman
Are you talking about Max Pirman? If so, he was 5/5 shooting with 0 turnovers against Triway.Series62 wrote:Max, too many turnovers and too many missed layups/shots. -
FlashJordan has made some nice strides thru the season and will be counted on next year , but my guess is he'd get eaten up. I'm sure he's got to play some with the varsity and if Sly thought he could do it he'd play him. He doesn't seem to be ready from watching him in reserve games IMO, but I was a wrestler so take it for what it's worth.
-
riderbbJordan I think will be fine when he learns to play within the game. He handles the ball very well, but at times gets out of control which leads to a turnover or a desperate shot. His outside shot has gotten better but not consistant.
-
OrrPrideWell agree or disagree with my point of view of the game, that's how I saw it. I believe the first half fouls were like 13 to 3......sorry but that's a little suspicious to me. I understand your point of view Red. I guess we were pretty evenly matched, but that stall ball stuff drives me nuts. Snoddy knew he had to do something to slow us down. We definately didn't handle it well. Oh well, water under the bridge at this point.

I will agree with that, new Junior Member!riderbb wrote: .......when he learns to play within the game. He handles the ball very well, but at times gets out of control which leads to a turnover or a desperate shot. His outside shot has gotten better but not consistant.
He has a lot to prove to me for being called by many "the heir apparent" to the point guard position.
I swear to God, that if I were coaching and/or still with "the old man", that kind of play vs. Triway (and dictating of tempo) would have NEVER NEVER happened. -
riderbbBRF, thank you for the welcome wagon. You and I agree alot on things. He does seem to being on the fast track to that position and I am not sure he deserve that yet. Sometimes he looks brilliant and the next 2 times down mistakes are made, but that is the learning process. You seem to be in the know, what is his turnover to assist ratio?
