1486wdi thought the smithies had some very good guards that can score - bates, frizell. I do realize they lost their experienced size, though.

THE4RINGZNorthwestern definitely not afraid to step it up with their OOC games this year.
-
Mr. RussellI think Drew and Alex are two of the top three players in the league, with that being said, Dalton has a great team. Very impressed with their patience on offense and playing them this summer they are much improved. Smithville will win it on the defensive end tomorrow if they pull it out. Klotzle has to stay out of foul trouble, along with Bates.
-
1486wdwow - that's a pretty strong statement, am curious to see how those two have developed, like i said, I thought they were very good last year. I don't think Dalton has anyone you would put in the top 5, but theprobably have 5 in the top fifteen which makes them dangerous and balanced. Soph guard Chase Moyer (6th man) is going to be a star in the league next season IMO.
-
Mr. RussellI agree with you 1486 about Dalton's depth and Chase as well. I would take him on my team anyday, I have seen him play hundreds of games over the years, he definitely is a baller. Curious to why he wasn't playing in overtime at the classic, after his showing in regulation.

Mr. RussellSome early statistical leaders for the WCAL:
B McKean: 25.8 PPG, 6.3 APG.
D Frizell: 19.8 PPG
L Licata: 18.4 PPG, 6.2 RPG
A Bates: 15.2 PPG, 6.5 RPG, 3.7 APG
L. Rufener: 14.8 PPG, 9.8 RPG, 4.5 APG
P. Rufener: 14 PPG, 7 RPG
J Briggs: 10.6 PPG, 5.6 APG
R Moore: 12 PPG, 7 RPG
Really impressed with the guards that have been playing great all around games, McKean, Bates, Rufener. Gotta love guards that rebound and get their teammates involved, but still score the basketball. Each of the three play a lot of point guard. Briggs had 23 and 7 yesterday at the Jackie Greynolds classic so I am sure his numbers will be even better next week also. -
Mr. RussellHats off to Dalton. After the first quarter, total control for the bulldogs. Nobody jumped out in the scorebook, very balanced scoring. Frizell played well in the first half but the pressure from Dalton wore him down in the second. No other Smithies were very effective scoring tonight. Klotzle and Bates both had a hard earned 8. Very scrappy Dalton bunch, good luck the rest of the year 1486.
-
1486wdfrizell is flat out good, dalton made him work for his points and that limited his effectiveness in the second half. Dalton played an awful first quarter (offensively it looked like an extension of the norwayne game), but the bulldogs settled down in the second half to take control. Good luck to the smithies as well.
-
madman11Helluva good game tonight in Smithville with the Smithies pulling it out with 6.8 seconds on a Frizzell layup. Rittman ahd a shot at the buzzer but Turbeville's runner was off. Next to Hillsdale, these could be two of the better teams in the league. Frizzell can shoot the lights out and with Turbeville, Patrick Rufener, and Logan Rufener, you can't just take away one because the others will find a way to score. Good Luck to the Indians tomorrow night as they head to Dalton. GO INDIANS!!
-
THE4RINGZAnyone headed to the Waynedale at Northwestern game Saturday night?
-
madman11Ringz- after seeing how bad Dalton beat Waynedale..... I don't think it will be that great of a game. 53-14
-
1486wdwe'll see how the game goes tonight with the indians. I have to pick dalton in this one as they beat smithvillelast week and dismantled waynedale last night. Rittman does have a nice size advantage but so does everyone vs the bulldogs. Both teams have very balanced scoring.

bogey14 points for the Golden Bears??? What in the world is going on in Apple Creek?

Please let me know of any incorrect scores. -
Havin Funyeah - 14 points is really low. Especially when you consider the Bear have held leads late into the game against Hillsdale, Smithville, Rittman and Norwayne. Dalton isn't any better than the rest of those teams other than they are nearly all seniors with tons of talent.
-
1486wdgood 6 point win fro dalton over rittman tonight. Bulldogs looked like they were rolling in the first half. Rittman had a nice 3rd quarter to close the gap, then Dalton held on for the win. A lot of thleticism on the floor tonight with those two teams. I felt dalton had a significantly better bench and that was the difference IMO. Rittmans guards also tended to drive too deep and throw up wild shots. They could probably make hay off of that with less athletic teams, but not tonight. After playing rittman and smithville in back to back weeks, I am very surprised the indians lost to smithville, frizell is really good, smithville just doesn't have much help.

madman11no offense....but after watching dalton for the past few years, i wish there was a shot clock in high school basketball. i don't mean to take anything away from the dawgs, they are a very good team, but something needs to be done about a team playing keep away the entire second half

thePITmanHere is a quote I read last week about someone talking about a team who played not "stall ball" but just a very patient, efficient, motion-style offense. I totally agree with this quote.
Here was the original post:It was a beautiful display of basketball and I enjoyed it very much. It was also a splendid example of why there should never, ever be a shot clock in high school basketball (or why shot clocks have ruined all other basketball). The game allowed for the better team, not the team with the better athletes to win. It was a wonderful sight and a joy to watch. I will use this game as an example to my friends and associates as to why I do not watch college basketball or the NBA. This was the game being played at its finest.
I don't understand how people say "that's not basketball." It's not basketball when you give someone 30 seconds and force them to chuck up the ball. Let the offense look for the best shot possible, and let the defense try to take the ball away. Part of the game is seeing which team can impose their will (and their preferred tempo) on the other. Let the best team and best-executed game plan win. That is just my opinion.I went to the St. Xavier-Dayton Meadowdale game last night at Springboro and saw one of the most incredible things. Meadowdale had the more athletic team and was pressing and playing tight man-to-man all game and St. X would either break the press for easy baskets or get into their offense and just run it and run it and run it until they got an easy bucket.
Meadowdale was 4-1 coming into the game and X was 3-2 and is not anywhere as good as previous X teams. So what does X do, the proceed to make a total of 23 field goals in the game, and here is the AMAZING PART, 22 of those baskets were LAYUPS. I don't mean short shots in the lane, etc., I mean literal layups. The one basket they made that wasn't was a deperation bucket at the end of the half that went in from 18 feet out. 22 of 23 baskets were LAYUPS. I have never seen anything remotely close to that before in my life. It was crazy.
Meadowdale got so tired of getting beat on cuts or drives to the basket that their pressure on the ball in the half court defense started to ease up and X ran their offense for over two minutes to start the fourth quarter. Then got the ball back and ran the offense for over another minute. It was pretty unreal to watch. -
madman11Well while i somewhat agree with that, it was the most boring display of basketball to watch the dalton point guard hold the ball until he was pressured then pass it to another guy who would do the same. Again, not trying to discredit the dawgs at all, they deserved to win that game
-
1486wdKind of a silly statement, madman (although I am sure its frustrating when your team is losing and can't do much about it)they did not play "keep away" the whole second half, but a good chunk of the 4th. The bulldogs made a decision that they were going to force rittman to come out and defend them away from the basket. Hackett is very hard to matchup with for a lot of teams as he often has a bigger guy on him and they like to put him at the point in that situation. Norwayne beat Dalton by collapsing the lane to take away their drives and dishes. Rittman was trying to do the same thing in second half and Dalton just eliminated that. Rittman seems to play the opposite of this tatctic, see how fast we can get a shot off, whether its there or not. I will say this, there was a tremendous amount of athleticism in that game at both ends, Dalton was just more disciplined. Also, the 12 assists by Dalton to the 1 by Rittman is a great stat line that shows what I am talking about with regards to patience and discipline, Dalton would work the ball around untill they had a good shot - think about how many layups they had. Good luck to rittman the rest of the year.
-
Mr. RussellPart of the reason Frizell doesn't have much help is because he doesn't get his teammates involved. He doesn't create for his teammates, only worries about getting himself shots. There are some very talented players on that team. Also Klotzle is near double figures, and Bates is averaging 14, 6, and 4, so I would say he gets plenty of help. Now against Dalton, he definitely didn't get much help haha. But don't judge a team on one game.
-
1486wdi do agree about him not involving teammates a whole lot. Bates has a ton of talent and I think he will be extremely good the next two years, I just saw him completely taken out of the game. Klotzle, is solid, although not spectacular. me saying he has no help is a little bit exaggerated. Their bench is way below average, though. I guess in comparing the teams i just thought that rittman's one through 5 are more talented (but frizell is the best player on either team).
-
Mr. RussellI agree with ya 1486, really bad bench for both teams haha. And we can disagree on who the best player is. I think overall Logan Rufener or Alex Bates are better all around players, look at their all around numbers, and defense isn't even close. Also I agree Rittman's 1-5 are better. They have a legit lineup. WITH THAT BEING SAID, If I had to take a scorer, or a guy to handle the ball down the stretch, or bust a zone, or make the winning bucket, I am picking Frizell. And Drew definitely has had a solid year. I just have seen him play and know his talents, and they are much more than scoring, I wish he would do more for his team besides shoot jumpers. Good luck, ending this first round of county games to all!
