Wayne County Athletic League Basketball

The 2010-11 WCAL can easily be divided into 2 groups.....The Haves & the Have Nots
The Haves....Hillsdale, Norwayne, Dalton &.............................. Northwestern (in that order)
The Have Nots....Smithville, Waynedale, Rittman & Chippewa (also in order)

Heck, Nwn might even be classified a have not....after McKean their kinda lean. The only thing that makes me think they might contend is Alberts uncanny ability to work miracles.

Hillsdale...with their twin towers, and Dalton.....speed,speed & execution.....along with Norwayne...loads of athletes....should duke it out for the championship.

Then you have Smithville.....Why everyone gave Snowbarger a pass is beyond me, as soon as he didn't have HUGE talent, he bugged out.....its a common trait among egomaniacs. It takes guts to mold and coach a team with little size and average talent into a well oiled machine. I wish Frizzell well, they should challenge the Huskies for 4th.
And Snowbarger....you watch, in a year or two he'll end up in "the right situation" aka "a team with big talent that was already a contender without him".

Waynedale may surprise a few people (I think they started at the Triway scrimmage)

Rittman looks like Smithville did in football, all kinds of promise destroyed by injuries, etc.

Chippewa.......I hope they win a few games

Off subject.....the situation with the girl fom Smithville is repugnant. Whoever robbed her of her senior season needs to have their ----- kicked! I know rules are rules, but c'mon, how many times has this gone unpunished in other cases?
  • KardiacKids
Wow Bloody....Did your kid play for Smithville and not get the playing time you think he deserved..or did you not like watching Snow coach cause he seemed cocky and irritated you, or wait a min how bout this one....did you or someone you know not get hired when Snow did?......either way you shouldn't be bashing someone on here like that............However you feel Snow did a real good job at Smithville and personally is a super nice guy....There are a lot of coaches that seem like Egomaniacs if you don't know them....I'm not looking for a fight on here because i know i won't win with you by reading some of you previous posts..All i'm sayin is don't bash people on here like that especially if you don't know the guys personal story........unless it's Mike Plant and the Daily record...lol
  • Bloody Toothbrush
    Hey Sipe.....

No need to fight, some of us are nice guys and some of us aren't.....
We all have opinions on people we don't know.....politicians, movie stars, sports figures, etc....
I'll stick to my opinion of Snowbarger and you can have yours....

Besides...if he loses sleep over the opinion of an internet poster, hes got bigger problems than just ego.

And for the record, I like Mike Plant....someone has to play the role of "no talent hack" to distract readers from the constant bombardment of "Dorksen drivel"
  • KardiacKids
LMAO.....Good Point on Opinions and Plant!! See i told you i couldn't win...lol...Oh but i just may in the future.....watch out...........

    1. I don't understand why everybody keeps saying Alberts works miracles and is a great coach? Please give me some examples...

    2. There were a lot of people in the Smithville program that put their egos aside to be EXTREMELY successful. Do you know that last year, at 17-5, they had the fourth best year in school history? And did so quietly. Granted I think they choked by having the weekend from hell and losing to Dalton and Norwayne, blowing the county, but Snowbarger, along with his assistants did a tremendous job. When he took the job, Kornowski was far from an all-ohioan, and so was Caldwell! Bates wasn't even in the district yet. So you can't give Snow a pass. These guys made themselves and the program better, through hours and hours in the off-season, and loved playing for Snow, because he wasn't a strict disciplinarian and acted more like a friend at times, than a coach. What should be said about Hillsdale's coach? He just shows up now with the best talent, and size in years? He isn't a good coach because of that? Bull. What about the size that West has had at Norwayne? Maibach, Bescanson, Brown, Davis....What have they done recently? I think he is a good coach too.

    3. Smithville has the talent this year to win the league! Anybody who thinks otherwise knows nothing! They have size in Klotzle. Two of the Three best guards and maybe overall players in the league in Frizell and Bates, and a three year letterman in Horst, along with guys who can play some major defense in Fike and Blough. I know, however, they will underachieve because the fire and swagger that many people in our community did not like, is gone. Back to being average as far as basketball is concerned. Football numbers will be back up again for the end of the Schrock era. Compare Northwestern and Smithville's talents, it isn't even close. But I bet that Northwestern beats Smithville this season, because of Brennan McKean.

    4. Is Dane Hammer going to be getting any minutes this winter for Dalton? He has some major major talent, but needs to be harnessed. 1486, what do you think?

    5. If Rufener is still healthy for Rittman, they will win some games, no doubt in my mind.

Good luck to everybody! Let's get some reports on here after the games are played this weekend!

    In response to Mr Russell...

    1. I think Alberts is a great coach because he consistently gets the most out of what I think is sometimes limited talent. I'm not saying the Huskies never have talent but if you look back through his tenure, they often have done more with less.

    2. Blah, Blah, Blah, Blah.....I get it, you like Snowbarger. Babble on all you wish, I'm still allowed to have my opinion and I stand by it.

part 2.....Oh brother, Did You just insinuate that Korn & Caldwell wouldn't have won any accolades without Snowbarger!!! Man, you really drank the Kool-aid. next stop....Jonestown!!!!
As far as the other coaches you mentioned, those were your opinions , not mine. I only gave my thoughts on Alberts & Snow.....I also wished Frizzell well, and still do.

    3. If thats how you feel, you just agreed with me that Alberts does more with less. Also, McKean is a talent but he doesn't win games all by himself.

    4. question for a Dalton fan.

    5. Of course they will win some games.

Good luck to you and the Smithies, Mr. Russell.
Since we seem to differ on opinions most of the time, I'm sure we'll speak again.
  • Mr. Russell
Bloody, I just meant that Snow took the job without knowing what kind of players they would be. They made themselves into those players, after Snow took the job. You're allowed your opinions and I respect them haha! I am actually sure we would agree more than we disagree. I just think Alberts underachieved in 08 and 09. 08 they finished 4th in the league, with Geitghy (sp), L. Mckean, B. Mckean, Roberts, Cherry, Bahari. I thought they had plenty of talent! Then the next year, they lose to a Triway team that did not have their talent. And trust me, I know what it's like to play Triway in the tournament, so I will cut them some slack there haha! But even last year, they had size, plus a dead eye shooter, and another good player in Cherry, and finished in the middle of the pack again. I think the whole Alberts family is full of good coaches, but I don't think JR. is a miracle worker. Nice talking to you, great reading input on here.
  • huskyup
Alberts has won multiple league championships and 2 regional appearances. They are league contenders year in and year out. Idk about being a miracle worker but he is a darn good coach
  • huskyup
Last year they tied with smithville for second in the league at 10-4, not middle of the pack
  • Mr. Russell
Thanks Huskyup. So tied for third, with Hillsdale and Dalton ahead of them? Not bad.
  • huskyup
    You're welcome :)

I know that this is not the girls basketball forum, but someone must stand up for principle. I have rarely posted here or jj, I just like to read and laugh, but a comment is called for. I don't know the young lady and have only heard and read some details. Although there is a possibility that the truth has been misconstrued, if a violation has occurred than it should be reported and punished. It's the same principle as getting a speeding ticket. Not all get caught, but if you break the law and are caught the punishment should follow. Furthermore, I again know little about who and how the whistle was blown, but administrators and athleteic directors are in the business of doing what is best for all student athletes and not simply a student athlete. Is a cop a jerk for enforcing the law? No, he is doing what is best for all citizens, even if the offender has no malace. If we allow room for gray areas in our judgement, how can we ever enforce the rules? And I think that most say that they can think of instances when the rules should have been enforced with atheltic eligibility.

The Huskies get a big test this weekend. Triway had some issues in their foundation game against Waynedale on Monday. I think this is a winnable game for Northwestern.
  • 1486wd
mr russell - I do think dane will get some minutes this year - he is an excellent athlete that has always been a little raw, but with a lot of potential. I think Dalton will have a lot of depth and may play as many as 10 guys so he'll have to earn his minutes, but we'll have to see how stutz ends up setting his rotation with lint, boak, dwyer, zeek, hackett the liikely starters IMO with raff, troyer, hammer, masters, and moyer all having the chance to be involved.
Also, as far as Alberts goes - I am not saying he is a hall of fame coach, but no one in the WCAL has been as consistently in the mix as the huskies have been since he's been there. that doesn't just happen by chance.

So it's ok if I tell the cop who didn't see you speed that you were speeding and have him give you a ticket?

Agreed WD............I think the WCAL is filled with several Great Coaches this year..........Should be a FUN year to watch...........I am gonna agree with OL' BLOODY(Don't get used to it!!) on the first 4 teams but in a different order........Dalton should win this league this year(great coach and a great Roster) followed by Hillsdale(coach?Awesome Height) ...Northwestern(With a couple Miracles by Alberts and McKean they can be higher LOL) Norwayne(West and CO. will be in every game)...............Wonder who has the toughest NON League schedule?
  • 1486wd
yep, and as i said earlier, I think outside of chippewa and probably waynedale, the other 6 all have a chance of wining the league, i just think the dawgs, falcons, huskies , and cats have the best chance. Dalton can indeed win the league, but I still would put my money on hillsdale due to their size and experience with fulk, licata, crossen, moore. Dalton returns 6 of their top 8 from last year but do have to replace a three year starter in JT troyer who gave them about 13 a game and lack a true center.
  • thePITman
    Triway 76
    Northwestern 68

    Tuslaw 55
    Dalton 53

    Strawburg 68
    Smithville 62

Not a great start for the WCAL.

riders1 - you make a good point, however I beleive that you are misunderstanding who the cops are. In my analogy, the adminstrators and athletic directors are the cops that have a duty to bring rule violations to the attention of the court system (the ohsaa). Again, I feel bad for the young lady. But if violations are overlooked (and I believe and agree that many are), the very nature of amateur atheltics is at risk in the future. Is that what we want? I have heard people for years complain about private school recruitment. Although this may not be a case of recruitment, allowing rules to be violated only endorses recruitment in the future. I hope that common sense people don't follow the philosophy of "if you can't beat them, join them." I guess the point that I am making is that I don't want to accept the fact that people endorse a philosophy of winning at all costs, even if that means cheating.
  • 1486wd
disappointing start for the bulldogs against a team that was not particularly talented (but was very well coached and played excellent defense IMO). Dalton was missing starting post Jake Zeek with an ankle injury, but just let this one slip away - the biggest stat was 5-15 from the line. Even go 50% and you win this game. Also missed too many lay ups in the first half, looked a little like they were still on the football field at times. Will not be able to do those things and win next week against hillsdale. I still fully expect a strong season for the dawgs, but it may take another week or two to get in the groove.
  • Mr. Russell
I am disappointed with Smithville's first game too. That should have been a double digit win for the Smithies. Weren't ready to play, and don't guard anybody. Hopefully like 1486 said, they should get in the groove. But then again, only 2 out of 8 players in the rotation played football, and they both played very well, so you figure the guys who have been shooting all fall would be ready to go.

Went over to the NW Triway game........Not sure what to think..........NW stayed in the game through 3 Quarters ......It was a typical NW team with the 3 point ball keeping them in the game.....But it seems Alberts will have several 3 point threats with Mckean Kline and a bench player i believe his name is Kidd..Triway seemed to just grind it out without really no one kid to key on...Polen and Wharton were solid and Triways big kid(Lawson I think) seemed to always know where to be...Rebounding will def be NW downfall this year....Scared to think what a team with a lot of size like Orrville might do to them....Also Mckean was never double teamed the whole game...I believe Polen guarded him most of the time......I would love to know the FG% of the two teams....Triway seemed to hit everything with many of their points coming at the foul line...NW seemed to miss a bunch....but still managed to keep it close.....I don't know maybe it was the new lights that NW put in making me a little disoriented!! Man it's bright in there now!! LOL Wasn't sure if i was watching 2 teams that will be lucky to win 11-12 games, Or 2 teams that will have great seasons........One thing is for sure IT"S EARLY!!
  • Mr. Russell
I love Mckean's game. But please, why would you not make him give up the ball every single time down the court? Make the other guys beat you. Sometimes I wonder.
