SykotykLong version of "The Move".
Cleveland decided in the early 90s to build new stadiums for all three sports teams. Modell leased Cleveland Municipal Stadium from the city years ago and received money for any event at the stadium, including the 81+ Indians game. That made the few luxury suites there very valuable. He told the city when discussing new stadiums that he didn't want to leave the Muni (which he had a sweetheart virtual zero cost lease), and instead just wanted it renovated. Which the city initially agreed to.
Fast forward to 1995. The Muni still hasn't been renovated yet as the bulk of the money went to the Gund Arena (nee Quicken Loans Arena) and Jacobs Field (nee Progressive Field). The baseball season started to a rousing success. Jacobs field was packed. Modell, in his infinite wisdom, thought that the Browns alone would still command the price for the luxury boxes that was previous charged for the 10 Browns games and 81 Indians game, plus the concerts, etc). He also no longer had the rent the Indians provided him for all these years.
It didn't take long to see the writing on the wall. As the season kicked off, Modell was crying poverty. He was so piss poor at managing the money he's made all these years, and didn't realize he was living on borrowed time when the Indians moved from the Muni.
He was demanding, at that time, a brand new stadium now. Which the city balked at because they had already come to an agreement what would be done. And those plans didn't include a new stadium per Modell's own request. He realized he would be bankrupt shortly, and that's when he went to Baltimore who didn't even negotiate. They simply agreed immediately to his demands of a new stadium. Still, he had to sell part of his team to afford the costs associated with that disastrous 1995. Still in debt, he finally sold the balk of the team off later, as mentioned.
He failed to realize that a lot of his income that he was burning through all those years was because of the Indians paying rent and that the same income wasn't going to be there if the Indians got their own stadium. So, rather than being smart and asking for his own stadium when they were handing them out free candy at Halloween.
Unfortunately for Browns fans, his ignorance ripped our team from the shore of Lake Erie with little warning in the face of his original request for a modest renovation to the Municipal Stadium that had already been approved.
For that, he can burn in hell. No owner in the history of sports could do what Modell did. He made so much money on the Browns (and by association, the Indians paying rent) that he failed to play ahead. He had no money despite selling out every year. Why? Who knows. We'll never know what Modell spent all the money on.
Everyone in the NFL agreed that his logic for moving the team was idiotic. Which is why we got a team again so quickly and so easily built a new stadium for them. And why there was a bidding war for the rights to that new franchise.
The Colts comparison is lacking. Baltimore attendance had dropped for years. There was no rush to get another team there. Even in the expansion and relocation boom of the 1990s, there was no desire to move to a city that barely supported the Colts in their later years that was smack in the middle of Washington and Philadelphia.

I get why Brown's fans would be mad at the guy but he isn't even the owner anymore so it doesn't mean anything to me. I know a decent amount about the current owner and I know a lot about the team. That is what matters to me.
I will admit, It is a pretty touchy subject with us Cleveland fans and we can be irked easily when it comes to the move. Calling you ignorant might have been out of line, but all I am saying is before making comments such as "so he had every right to move," you should definitely learn the whole story. As for being ignorant, here is an ignorant post for you:
Nice to see capone passed the troll torch to you non. Just like capone you already have more posts in the cleveland thread than the pittsburgh thread, and also just like capone you have no idea what the fuck you are talking about with these comments. The browns have sold out and have never blacked out since they came back in 1999. Nice fail dumbass.Non;609910 wrote:They'll be giving them away. -

BigDaddy is thinking about going to the game and probably purchasing tickets online.
I'm just saying day after Christmas with the home team coming off two losses to bad teams, not in the playoff race. They'll be a ton of no shows and tickets available for very cheap.
I saw on the Plain Dealer site there are tickets going for $35. Face value for the Steelers is like $80.
But for the record, there will be a lot of no shows and tickets everywhere for the Steelers Thursday night game. -
THE4RINGZBigdaddy I just ran into one of my friends who is looking to get rid of his season tickets for this game. PM me if You are interested.

I also liked McCoy's actions late in the game yesterday, showing some leadership.

So, where is the evidence we quit on the team? LMAO you are such a dumb fuck. Capone Jr here just spewing bullshit like always. By the way I saw steelers tickets being sold for less than $60. Way to distort your facts. -
Jester
They are headed in the right direction. It may not look that way in the W/L column, but if you actually look at the product on the field, they are much improved from last season. Dumbass.Non;610389 wrote:nice fail

Browns fans were fired up about the progress this team has made. We still are fired up and are actually excited for the future unlike last year. Of course you take that out of context so you can troll. Still looking for the evidence that we quit our team....
