justincredibleI'd be a high handicapper. I can break 100 now, not sure if I could break 90.
-
justincredibleI've been looking around online. I really like the looks of the Wilson Staff Ci9's.

You would be well served to look towards TaylorMade or Callaways, Callaways particularly.justincredible wrote: I'd be a high handicapper. I can break 100 now, not sure if I could break 90.
I have owned about 10 different sets from different manufacturers the most part the past decade and Callaways are by far the easiest to hit it your trying to improve your game. They aren't great for a scratch golfer looking for incredible feel, but where you're at with your game you would notice a huge difference in terms of forgiveness and length with them. I swear they fly at least a club further than almost any other brand I have used.
In terms of woods, your best bang for your buck would be looking for some Taylormade R7 woods. They are pretty recent in terms of the underlying technology, but can be had very affordably for the most part if you keep your eyes peeled.
I'm just speaking form personal experience, but the worst thing higher handicap players can do is get a set of irons that are designed for a more skilled player and demand consistent good ball striking to really be playable. Once you get to the point you have a swing that is consistently repeatable, then you worry about irons that put a premium on feel. Until then you will have far more fun getting to that point getting a set of irons that first and foremost are very forgiving. -
justincredibleThanks for the info. The Callaway x18's look nice.

gerb131Seems like the entire Dicks is on sale up here. I can't wait to inject a few dollars into the economy this weekend.

They are. I have a set of X-12,14's, and 16's. I never bought the 18's because I frankly don't need anymore clubs but they are a nice set. Also look at the Callaway Big Bertha irons, not the X series. Those are the ones that are worth looking at because they fly far and are super forgiving.justincredible wrote: Thanks for the info. Callaways are also super plentiful on ebay, hence my suggestion to just keep an eye out for a set that doesn't look abused. It's a good way to get alot of club for your buck, because once you take them off the rack and to the range they become used. So a little prudence can save you some cash and get you alot more club than you might otherwise be able to afford at the store.
Good luck with your search and keep us posted on how it turns out. -
raiderbuckTaylormade Burner R7. They are $399 pretty much everywhere. They are last years model, so they are replaced by the R9's (damn good irons IMO).

Yes, the set is 4-PW. Since you're a high handicapper, you probably won't need a 3 iron. -
Terry_Tate
That's the exact iron set I have, and I love them. I shoot in the low 90's and just got those last year and love the feel. I also HIGHLY recommend the TaylorMade Burner Fairway Woods. When I was building my set last year I got the 07 Burner 3 wood like Zwick recommended and I hit that thing all the time, it's my money club.raiderbuck wrote: Taylormade Burner R7. I was building my set this time last year like you're doing and I spent around 1000-1100 for everything, but I like everything I got. Irons were 450 I think, Fairway wood was 130, got a Ping putter for 130 and I really like it, but Odyssey is fantastic, got a Mizuno driver that I like, but honestly I'd go with a TaylorMade driver over the Mizuno. My golf bag is the Nike Sasquatch. Got it on ebay for 120, and it's a freaking awesome bag. I would highly recommend it. I still use a sand wedge I got off Pinemeadow.com, but I got a Mizuno lob wedge for 80, and that's a great great club. -

You'd be better served to stay with the DI's, The CI's are for a better player. Less offset, smaller head... not as forgiving.justincredible wrote: I've been looking around online. I really like the looks of the Wilson Staff Ci9's.

justincredible^Gotcha.
Terry, you're in Cincy, right? What courses do you frequent around the city? The only two courses I've played in the area are Four Bridges CC and the cheap Kings Island course. -
justincredibleThe TaylorMade Burner irons look sweet.
Any other decent clubs without the standard "polished" finish to them? -
ZWICK 4 PREZYou need to be less worried about how they look and more worried about how they perform lol. That said... I hit the burners at the NEO Golf show and they felt nice.
I wouldn't hesitate to pick up these G5's for $392

Yeah, I know. I'd still like to find a set I find aesthetically pleasing but I won't but a set I can't hit just because they look nice.ZWICK 4 PREZ wrote: You need to be less worried about how they look and more worried about how they perform lol. Nah, look is an important part to the mental aspect of the game as well. If you like the way they look, you will inevitably play them better (within reason). I see what you're saying, but you gotta like what you're hitting to maintain confidence too.ZWICK 4 PREZ wrote: You need to be less worried about how they look and more worried about how they perform lol. Completely disagree. If I went off looks I'd never play a Ping iron, but the i3 blade has yet to be permanatly replaced in my bag. The only thing that's rivaled it is the Ping s59 and that's even uglier. -
ZWICK 4 PREZOnly thing I'll agree with on looks is the size and shape of the head. I can't play something with a thick top line and large head. It can be painted any color with any design on it though.

You're kind of making my point though - you like Ping, therfore you play them better than what you probably would other brands irons of equal performance. Hitting a brand you trust or a model that you like makes a big difference -maybe even looks. I'm a Titleist fan and hit them pretty well, but would not have as much confidence with say, Ping. Personal preference is big in the mental aspect of the game.ZWICK 4 PREZ wrote:Hamp89 wrote:

ZWICK 4 PREZBut I always try to go back to Wilson Staff b/c I LOVE how the blades look, but I just don't control the ball flight or shape as well with them. If I went on looks alone, I'd play Wilson Staff blades exclusively... but I always switch back to the ugly Pings b/c they simply work better for me.
I'm not Brand loyal to Ping. I'll hit anything that gives me a consistant mid to low draw. The i3 blade and s59 are the top performers for me, followed by the Wilson Staff fg59 and Mizuno MP-33 -

I just bought these for a birthday present to myself last month and have played a couple times with them already and I am a BIG FAN!!! (I played the Adams Tight Lies irons before this and they are just okay).ZWICK 4 PREZ wrote: You need to be less worried about how they look and more worried about how they perform lol. That said... I am planning on getting fitted one night this week or this weekend. April is apparently "free club fitting" month and you get a free 15 minute fitting. I am sure a thorough fitting will take longer than that and it won't be completely free. What kind of cost am I likely looking at on a fitting? Dick's doesn't have a price that I can find online.OneBuckeye wrote: Go to a club fitter now... save yourself learning bad habits early, especially if you are tall. -
justincredibleAnyone use this driver? It's only $130 at Dick's. I think I am going to test it out.
-
Hamp89Dick's fitting is usually free if you buy your clubs there, or at least it was when I bought a driver and hybrid a couple years ago.
-
justincredibleSweet. I'll probably at least pick up a driver there.
