You know what they say...do you want anybody sitting on your jury deciding your fate who wasn't smart enough to get out of it in the first place?

Trying to get it rescheduled isn't the same as trying to get out of it. If I had a vacation planned I would definitely try and get it rescheduled but I am at the mercy of the judge.

They have these people, some of whom their employers don't pay them while at jury duty, that could potentially decide the life or death of someone and it seems like they choose the lowest of the people called for duty, anyone with any knowledge of the legal system gets dismissed. I don't know about anyone else, but I'd rather have a jury full of knowledgeable people then 12 schmucks off the street who don't know anything about the legal system.
I can only comment on what it is like in Queens, New York (where I'm from), but here knowing the legal system not only won't get you dismissed,it will lead you to be getting picked pretty quickly. I'm convinced the only ones who get dismissed in NYC are people who don't (or claim to not) speak English, which you can imagine is quite a few in this area.

Seriously, my father who is a lawyer ALWAYS gets picked, he's even served as foreman. So saying I'm the daughter of a lawyer does squat for me.

That said I was picked to serve the first time I was called for Jury Duty and it was an interesting experience, something everyone should do at least once in his/her life.
