My wife and I delivered out first 1/4/2010(also my b-day) and it was myself, my mom and her mom. Wouldn't change anything, best experience of my life so far.

Congrats on your cute little bundle of joy! Care to share the name?

If she's anything like the average modern woman, a physical strain beyond anything she's ever done would be anything more strenuous than the following.

    - killing a spider

    Agreed.

So, your wife wants her mother in the delivery room? You should be glad that she doesn't want the baby's real father in there! :)

After under going Lamaze classes for what seemed like 50 Hrs. At the time of conception when I was helping with the breathing process, my wife told me to shut the F'up and let her moan. I said OK. LOL. You want to be there Dude, Don't give up being there when your kid is born. Its a life changing experience that bonds you to your wife and family forever. If she wants Mom there and its OK by the rules, then fine, but you need to be there to experience the miracle of life. It brings tears to your eyes just thinking about it and the cycle of life that is birth and death. Don't give up that experience.

As long as I'm still around, sharing baby names is never a good idea.

" my wife told me to shut the F'up and let her moan." ...pretty sure most women have said that during transition....intense pain!

This thread proves that there is no right answer...there are valid points to both sides, and each person is different.

Put the shoe on the other foot. Imagine if YOU were the one in the hospital getting ready to give birth and you told your wife that you wanted your mother there because she had gone through the same thing that you are going through, and your wife told you that she didn't want your mom there.

When my wife gave birth it was at 4am, and it was only the two of us. It was a wonderful experience that I will never forget, but I don't think it would have been any less wonderful if my MIL was there. My mom is actually a labor and delivery nurse, so my wife would have welcomed her if she was in the area.

Every situation is different, and I suggest that you go with whatever your wife wishes. My wife was my MIL's daughter a long time before she was my wife, so to deny that connection simply because of what I want would be a mistake, IMO.

It only gets better. My first son turns one on Thursday. My second son will be born by c-section on St. Patty's day.

I was there when my daughter had her daughter. Because her husband has a job with varied hours, they skipped the classes. I was her coach, but he was her support person in every other way. His mother also ended up in the room with us although that wasn't part of my daughter's orginal plan. She was only a tiny bit embarrassed afterwards at the number of times she dropped an F-bomb in front of her mother-in-law, but she was very glad that her mother-in-law saw the birth and really bonded with the baby as she is a much more reliable babysitter than I am. We moms were very good about fading into the wood work and leaving the room for a time after so they could have time alone with the baby. We are also both very good about respecting boundaries in their lives and about letting them deal with their own issues. Labor can be long -- with an extra person, you can take a break... get something to eat... remember that your wife does not intend to hurt your feelings or your fingers..... One of you can nap while the other one supports (ok... I did most of the napping after the epidural was in).
