Well..I guess so. I guess I am for rights of obese people that are obese b/c of medical reasons. How's that? If your obese b/c you can't get your lazy ass off the couch..then no..I don't feel sorry for you at all. But if your obese and you can't do anything about it..then sure..you should have the same rights as everyone else.
Seems pretty hypocritical to me that you can accept that some people are obese for medical/genetics reason but you can't accept that there are people in the GBLT community who may have been born with that way genetically.

I just think that we need to have a bit more sensitivity for overweight people and not dismiss everyone we see who is heavy as a lazy, pop drinking, cookie and candy eating slob who could lose weight by the ton if only they had better self control and pushed themselves away from the dinner table sooner. it just isn't that way for many of those who are heavy. Some folks drink to escape daily pressures, and thousands of others choose to eat for the very same reason. When we constantly post pictures of people who are morbidly obese, we are not helping solve the problem. We are probably doing far more harm than good. If we want to really help these folks, I think that some positive words of encouragement would work better than demeaning them and making fun of them. If nothing else, you folks who worry about having enough room in an airplane might luck out and sit next to a formerly fat person who, because of someone's kindness and concern has been able to take back their life and change some poor habits, enabling you to sit in your seat without being inconvenienced by the formerly overweight person sitting next to you. You never know....

Great post! I think some people fail to realize how difficult it is to lose weight when obese. Yeah there are some people who may have lost 10-15 pounds, but never had an extremely challenge of trying to lose 100-150 pounds or more. Just as my grandfather once told me about the difficulty of obesity, go find some heavy weights, carried them with you all day, and you will see how tired you will get. Society also isn't making it much better. It seems like every time you turn on the TV, you see an ad about Pizza, Beer, Chicken, Burgers, Hot Dogs, Chips, Candy, Pop, etc. Since a lot of people go after what they see, they end up eating those things. I'm not excusing the poor lifestyle of obese people, but as Swamp Fox was pretty much saying, let us be a little more sensitive when it comes to larger people. Now I feel bad for the picture I posted.

umm i dont think fat people realize how easy it is too lose weight when ur obese...its much easier to lose a hundy when ur obese then it is to lose 40 when you aren't...fat rolls off you when you have too much of it. Your body wants to get rid of it, so moderate excercise and some self control will actually work if you're obese...problem is, they're lazy. Period. So they won't try and if they do try they wont see it through.

I really don't care whether or not you think my views are hypocritical. I'm not bringing the whole born/choice thing onto this thread...but as I said..IMO..it is a choice. So..with me thinking thats a choice..not a medical condition or born that way...how the hell am I being hypocritical? If I thought you were born that way..yet..you shouldn't have any rights..then yes..I could see where you thought I was being a hypocrite.

You make some great points as well Derek. Self control is the key, but as other has mentioned, other stuff factor into it as well. Such as stress, depression, etc. I do say though, if they really want to lose weight, they have to make it happen for them self, no matter how hard we try to motivate them.

If you don't fit in the seats you should be labeled as handicapped and placed in those seats with your own specialized fat chair.

Its way easier to lose mass amounts of weight when you are obese than losing that extra 10-15 you added during winter (or after HS). Just look at the weight loss shows on TV. During the first few sessions the fat just falls off and their losing 10+ pounds each week. But as the season goes on, it gets tougher to lose pounds.

Well said...what some without the issue fail to realize..like drugs..food can become an addiction for some. Why don't drug addicts just quit using drugs? It's just not that simple for most. Some don't have the will power to just quit using. Just like some don't have the will power to quit eating. Drug users for example..they get stressed out..depressed..had a bad day..they'll turn to that drug to give themselves a high to relieve all that stress for a little bit. Same thing with some obese people...they get stressed..whatever..they turn to food.

And the people on the shows have counselors, nutritionists, personal trainers. They have all those resources available to them..they have people that can tell them what they can and can't eat...they are there 24/7 to do nothing but lose weight...they have all the time in the world to focus on that..they don't have to worry about going to work, being a wife/husband or father/mother while they are on that show. Sure..you can have a nutritionist or personal trainer at home as well..but not everyone has the money for the costs for something like that. I'm sure half the obese people could succeed in an environment like that have on those kind of shows.

Another thing I would like to mention is that most obese people I have come across, were also that way as a child. So they have struggled with this almost their entire life. Parents must be more aware what they are putting inside their children and get them more active. An eating habit a child starts out with, really can affect them the rest of their life.

Another post from someone who has no clue. Like I said..food becomes an addiction for some obese people. You think the obese doesn't know you lose more pounds when your heavier? Your an idiot if you think they don't already know that. It's all about will power. Just like it is with a drug addiction.

As I once read in a book - "People with an addiction, usually are trying to escape something."

So you don't have truly any professional/ academic experience or knowledge pertaining to counseling and the thought process of obese food addicts.

    Thanks.

Are you retarded? As an obese person..yes..I have a perfect idea of the thought process of an obese food addict. I'd consider myself more of an expert than any skinny person that went to school about it!

    You're welcome.

Just because you are fact in no manner makes you an expert to go out and give counseling advice to obese food addicts.

Could you please show me where I was giving any obese people any counseling? If anything..I was trying to give 'skinny' people who have ignorance on the subject some reasoning as to why in fact some people are obese.

My dad works at a Walmart (was retired for a month and took a job there for whatever reason...) and when he gets stuck filling in as a door greeter he HATES this. He wishes there was some way that he could force them to actually prove they have a disability and not just fat.
