So I wouldn't get up for a war veteran
-
Belly35I was in Chicago this week visiting my daughter, yesterday I was getting on the red line. I ask this young guy if I could sit on the bench he had taken up two set with his 007 breif case. All I wanted him to do is to remove the case so I could sit down.. mofo said no

Based on the story you provided, the guy probably wasn't even a veteran.SportsAndLady;1235063 wrote:I'd say probably 25% of my train rides I give up my seat for an elderly person. I'm not a dick. But when someone expects me to just get up because you served in the military, that's where I draw the line. -
Belly35I give up my seat for hot chick, old people (then we have a debate on who older), women with children, pregnant women, handicap people, people who are carrying lot of bags. That covers my bases...

I Wear PantsHis service is commendable but doesn't earn him special treatment on the bus/train. Especially if he's in his mid-30s and isn't injured or anything. And how the fuck are you to know this guy wasn't just making that shit up? If he's a big enough douche to say "yo, let me sit down" he's probably a big enough douche to make something like that up.

Now if I saw an elderly man with a WWII coat on, I would probably get up and offer him my seat, but that is more a product of his age than his status as a veteran. I would also stand for an elderly non-veteran, an elderly lady, a pregnant lady, or someone with an obvious physical disability. I would be surprised if this guy was an actual veteran. Not to say that I haven't met some real a-holes during my nearly 40 years in the military, but I don't know many that would attempt to capitalize on their status as a veteran in the manner you described. I obviously appreciate the sacrifices that any veteran has made for their country, but that doesn't entitle them to act like they are superior to anyone else. If anything most veterans are used to sacrifice and would be more likely to give up their seat than expect someone to do the same for them.
Agreed. Having served some military time myself I don't expect special treatment and even become embarrassed when it's offered to me.
If it were me and the person was elderly (regardless of veteran status), disabled, or pregnant I will gladly give up my seat. Otherwise it's first come, first served. If this dink & his girlfriend are using his "veteran of foreign wars" status to expect special privilege, they're dillusional. -

thePITmanI think if somebody offers to give up their seat or whatever to a veteran, it should be considered something out of the ordinary, special, and appreciated by the veteran. It should NOT be expected, though. Veterans get way too much glory, IMO. Now, if we're talking about war veterans that won our country's freedom in the Revolutionary War, or changed the whole landscape of our country in the Civil War, then sure. But if you're over fighting other countries' wars instead of our own, I don't give a crap. And don't expect special treatment from companies, airing radio and TV advertisements pressuring employers to "hire veterans".

BigAppleBuckeyeWhat subway stop was it? Location can usually dictate what kind of characters are waiting for the train. I am going to ballpark it here and guess it was a Times Square stop, or something in the Canal Street or Chambers Street area ...

No it's not. I don't ever expect special treatment just because I went to war and lost a leg. I could give two shits. I can't stand when people ask for discounts or special privileges just because they went to war. That is just nuts. I'm guess the guy was probably a piece of shit and never saw any action. -

my comment was not about what the veteran or sports and lady did but about sports and ladys description of what the girl told him about the veteran's service.Tiger2003;1235385 wrote:No it's not. according to the account the guy himself never said anything about being in the service. We have no idea if this guy had been disabled in some way because of his service. and SAls commentary was just being jerky.I Wear Pants;1235434 wrote:S&L was just paraphrasing what the douchenozzle said.

Again I don't think there is anything wrong with that. If my old lady ever said anything like that to someone I'd smack the shit out of her. -
