Losing Weight....Got Tips

  • justincredible
Green tea always gives me a headache for some reason.

I echo everyone else. Your diet is the biggest thing, and just getting out and walking every day is enough exercise to be effective. I lost a ton of weight doing nothing more than a strict diet and walking 6 blocks (one way) to and from work 2 (or 4 if I went home for lunch) times a day.

True that. Diet is usually the biggest for most people. You don't have to go over the top on working out, just don't be a sloth essentially.

Agreed. I think that working out is better for me mentally than physically to be honest. Though it is good for both in reality.

Price and actually spending the time to make healthy food is the biggest deterrent. But most vegetables dont really take much time. You can boil, steam or cook them in a pan. None of which takes too much time. The main course is usually the only part of my meal that takes time to make.

    Pan or skillet?

On a skillet on the stove, or eat them cold.

I only eat carbs for dinner and drink nothing but water all day. In the evenings I have a few beers.

How often should I "weigh in"

I'm planning every Sunday night before bed because I'm the worst on weekends.

I've done it before weighing in every day but too much to fluctuate.

    Typically, I will:
    -Asparagus (Skillet)
    -Broccoli (Steam)
    -Green Beans (Boil)
-Corn (Boil)...though this is more starch than vegetable
    -Celery (Wash and eat cold)
-Peas (Steam the pods, boil the actual peas. Depends on how you buy them)
    -Spinach....FUCK SPINACH!!!!

I've been meaning to do the 6 meals a day. They say it gets your metabolism higher, and that makes sense.

Really the only way to lose weight is to create a calorie deficit, and then @3500 calories to lose 1 pound. But hopefully the exercise and proper diet gets your metabolism up. A healthy weight loss rate is 2-3 lbs/wk.

You really don't want to cut your calories too much because it trips your body into a lower metabolic rate. Try to create a deficit of 1000 calories a day - I absolutely wouldn't go below 1400 eating, and since you'll be exercising 1800 is probably more reasonable (you need energy to workout!). It's really not that hard exercising 6 days a week, but you'll need to lift weights and do cardio. Optimize your weight lifting by supersetting and doing more reps, so your routine become almost another cardio workout. Run or do the eliptical in the morning or evening. I don't know that exercising twice a day has any added benefit, but it just seems to me you'll up your metabolic rate faster if your exercising two different times a day rather than one.

It's amazing how often we get asked about the "weight loss" pill and how the people asking for them expect it to work by itself. We always have good conversations after they leave.

There is no magic pill and you will not lose weight without putting in the effort.

You've already got off to a good start by admitting you need to eat less, eat healthier, and put in the work to coincide with those decisions.

As others have said, water, water, water, water... And don't follow that 8 glass a day BS. If you're working out more you're obviously sweating more. Try drinking about 0.5 OZ per pound. If you weigh 200 pounds, try drinking about 100 ounces. You can cut that down on days where you aren't as active. Your urine will tell you if you're getting enough water in the day if it's consistently colorless.

Eliminate carbonated drinks. Sounds easy, but I know it's hard. It's an issue I have myself. Get a real juice drink, low-fat milk, or a simple water with flavor packets instead...

As like_that said, instead of eating 3 big meals, eat 6 small ones. Eat more protein and a little fat and it'll keep you fuller longer.

Fiber is another important asset to weight loss as well. Slowly increase your fiber intake. Fiber helps with glucose and cholesterol levels and is another item that can help a meal seem bigger to your body.

Fruits and veggies. I hate veggies so I sometimes substitue a V8. Fruits such as Watermelon are fantastic weightloss items. Watermelon is 92% water, tastes great, and has several health benefits.

Just a few simple things to go by. a lot of people have already contributed solid ideas.

Don't eat processed shit. If it's man made, I don't trust it. Get your carb sources from natural sources such as fruits & vegetables but don't go heavy on the fruit. Higher protein/healthy fat with lower carbs will shed weight quickly. It's all about insulin regulation.

And the "6 small meals, once every 3 hours per day" is bullshit. May work for some but most can't do it effectively.

    Ta da.

Just to repeat what you said but using different words.

Drink more water and less soda.
Don't eat a few hours before bedtime.
Cardiovascular exercise, being walking or jogging.

Burn more calories than you take in= weight loss.

how fat are you, just for a reference point?

I agree with BR fuck the 6 small meals. Do two big ones instead Lunch and Dinner. Fuck breakfast, drink green tea or coffee (black) instead. As for vegtables, buy a big bag/container of 50/50 spring mix and spinach, eat at least one big salad a day and you are golden. Baby Carrots are also an easy one. Stop putting peanut butter on your fucking celery. Avoid processed foods, wheat flour and gluten like the plauge.

I agree with the first part of your post. As for the 6 meals, it's all about your lifestyle and eating style. It helps you portion your meals and not over eat IMO. If you are hungry you know your next meal will be in no time.

Like you said, it's about lifestyle but the "6 small meals" doesn't "stoke the metabolic fire" like some of these gurus profess.

It may be more convenient for some but, like OneBuckeye said, you can get the same, or better, results eating two meals per day. Some people, like myself, are big eaters and get similar results on a 2000 calorie meal after a 16 hour daily fast.

The biggest thing is to cut out the processed shit. High fructose corn syrup is the friggin devil and it's sounding like it's the major cause of many different types of cancer.

I did this for a month or so and always found myself looking forward to the next meal. I don't think it helped me cut my calories either, because they just turned from small snacks to small meals. Also finding 6 different things (that were good for me) to eat a day was a pain in the ass. Eating fewer meals sucked at first but once I started use coffee and green tea to cut my hunger in the morning and it has been a breeze.

Same with me and it was bullshit lugging around shakes, bars, etc when all they did was spike my hunger because of the "hidden" sugars in them.

+1 on the process food and corn syrup. Still have idiot friends who think natural/whole/organic food is bullshit.

I don't drink it, but what about carbonated water? You guys are saying don't drink carbonated drinks, but i feel like it would be a good alternative for people who just can't help but drink soda.

I just quit drinking pop, quit eating lunch meat for lunch and started eating tuna and chicken salad, and ate more fruits and vegetables. I lift weights but only do 30 min of cardio on the weekdays and that was enough.

I have no problem eating 6 times per day. Of course I like most veggies and can sit there an eat a raw green pepper and the like, so it's not hard for me to find my next meal.

The other thing I do is grill chicken breasts for lunch. I'll grill 3 on Sunday night and 2 on Wed night to take in my lunch. I put some fresh broccoli in the tupperware with it and the moisture from the chicken steams the broccoli when I microwave it.

I do a single serving Crystal Light when I really have the urge to drink something sweet.

Also, one of the biggest things, is make sure to cheat with your favorite foods every so often. If you feel like you a depriving yourself, you are just going to eventually give up. You have to reward yourself at times.
