is this inhumane?
-
ZWICK 4 PREZMy fiance's dog is a rescue dog that doesn't grasp the concept of house breaking, so he needs penned up when no one is with him. He freaks out in a crate and has shredded his nails and chipped teeth trying to get out. I want to set up a pen with electric fencing around the top, middle, and bottom. I know it will hurt like hell the first time he tries to get out, but he should quit trying after that. If I don't electrify it, he'll just try to chew it up. I know the fencing isn't really for dogs, but my buddy has it on his back fencing and his dog keeps off it now.

WebFirei would work on the house breaking, even if it requires a professional trainer. There has to be a reason behind that. How old is the dog?

Belly35Z4P I can help you
What you need is a few lesson on real dog training.
4 Golden Retrievers Obedience Championships CD, CDX
Sorry Z4P but really is that how you want to take care of your pet... Who training whom
Note: I can't train my dogs at any of the local Kennel Club and Training area the method is old fashion and not poltically correct for the Liberal dog owners. But I've won titles and championships and they don't and they wonder why thier dogs don't listen and obedient -
se-alumDon't see why it would be inhumane, considering they make shock collars for virtually the same reason.

RotinajHow big would the pen be and how long would the dog be in it at a time?

This is a mutt that must have been abused beyond belief b/c he quivers constantly and is scared of his own shaddow. He's not very easily trained and responds to commands with pissing himself.Belly35;1044687 wrote:Z4P I can help you

6ft x 6 ft. He's a 25 lb beagle. He'd be in it while she's at work.Rotinaj;1044692 wrote:How big would the pen be and how long would the dog be in it at a time? -

So you are using electric fence meant for animals over 1000#? On a little dog? Might want to rethink that.ZWICK 4 PREZ;1044731 wrote:http://www.tractorsupply.com/fi-shock-trade-polywire-656-ft-spool-3600671 -

I've touched an electric fence before. It's not pleasant but I wouldn't call it inhumane. (If I am out in the field and I want to know if the fence is on, I'm not afraid to use the back of my hand if I don't have a tester.) Just make sure you aren't using a 25 mile fence charger on a 6' strand of wire.WebFire;1044760 wrote:So you are using electric fence meant for animals over 1000#? On a little dog? hasbeenIf you could keep the voltage down, it should work. The dog has that big of space, it should be fine. Two of my dogs were abused before we got them. Only one of them had huge problems with the cage. It was actually my sisters dog, and when we brought him over to live with us and our two dogs, he dealt with the cage better because he had others in there with them.
I'm guessing that's not an option for you. -

The cord has nothing to do with how lethal the shock may or may not be. And the breaking load is 180lb so the tensile strength isn't very high... I'm not sure where you get the 1000# from?WebFire;1044760 wrote:So you are using electric fence meant for animals over 1000#? On a little dog? Might want to rethink that. -

Duh. I assume if you are using that wire you are using a box big enough for the wire. I get 1000# because that wire is for big animals like cattle and horses. I grew up on a small farm and we had steers, horses and pigs. We would get shocked occasionally as well. It gets your attention. The dogs would occasionally hit one with their tail. It isn't likely to hurt them, but if you had too much voltage for a small dog, it has POTENTIAL to be an issue.ZWICK 4 PREZ;1044774 wrote:The cord has nothing to do with how lethal the shock may or may not be. Just be careful. Like pnhasbeen said, make sure it is low voltage. Honestly it seems to be overkill. -
ZWICK 4 PREZI'm open to all suggestions. They need to be immediate actions though.

Obedience and praise creates confidence and good behavior
10 minutes and the dog will learn to walk beside you, watch every move you make and come to you when you call and will not coward for you -

We bought him a thundershirt this weekend and it didn't help at all. He might need the meds. -
LJ
Yeah, it is 100% seperation anxiety. The electric won't help at all, probably make it worse. Because then he will associate you leaving with getting hurt as well as being locked up.ZWICK 4 PREZ;1044826 wrote:Yes there is.

ernest_t_bassI have a beagle. He sucks. Is there such thing as a "voice box removal surgery?"
